An ellipsoidal mirror for focusing neutral atomic and molecular beams

    Get PDF
Manipulation of atomic and molecular beams is essential to atom optics applications including atom lasers, atom lithography, atom interferometry and neutral atom microscopy. The manipulation of charge-neutral beams of limited polarizability, spin or excitation states remains problematic, but may be overcome by the development of novel diffractive or reflective optical elements. In this paper, we present the first experimental demonstration of atom focusing using an ellipsoidal mirror. The ellipsoidal mirror enables stigmatic off-axis focusing for the first time and we demonstrate focusing of a beam of neutral, ground-state helium atoms down to an approximately circular spot, (26.8±0.5) μm×(31.4±0.8) μm in size. The spot area is two orders of magnitude smaller than previous reflective focusing of atomic beams and is a critical milestone towards the construction of a high-intensity scanning helium microscope

Is oxygenation related to the decomposition of organic matter in cryoconite holes?

Cryoconite is a sediment occurring on glacier surfaces worldwide which reduces ice albedo and concentrates glacier surface meltwater into small reservoirs called cryoconite holes. It consists of mineral and biogenic matter, including active microorganisms. This study presents an experimental insight into the influence of sediment oxygenation on the cryoconite ability to produce and decomposition of organic matter. Samples were collected from five glaciers in the Arctic and the European mainland. Cryoconite from three glaciers was incubated in stagnant and mechanically mixed conditions to imitate inter-hole water–sediment mixing by meltwater occurring on glaciers in Northern Hemisphere, and its effect on oxygen profiles and organic matter content. Moreover, we investigated short-term changes of oxygen conditions in cryoconite from four glaciers in illuminated and dark conditions. An anaerobic zone was present or approaching zero oxygen in all illuminated cryoconite samples, varying in depth depending on the origin of cryoconite: from 1500 µm from Steindalsbreen (Scandinavian Peninsula) and Forni Glacier (The Alps) to 3100 µm from Russell Glacier and Longyearbreen (Arctic) after incubation. Organic matter content varied between glaciers from 6.11% on Longyearbreen to 16.36% on Russell Glacier. The mixed sediment from the Forni Glacier had less organic matter than stagnant, the sediment from Longyearbreen followed this trend, but the difference was not statistically significant, while the sediment from Ebenferner did not differ between groups. Our results have implications for the understanding of biogeochemical processes on glacier surfaces, the adaptation of organisms to changing physical conditions due to abrupt sediment mixing, but also on the estimation of productivity of supraglacial systems

Diagnosis of oesophageal cancer by detection of minichromosome maintenance 5 protein in gastric aspirates

Symptomatic oesophageal cancer is usually advanced and the prognosis poor. Lethality of symptomatic oesophageal cancer has motivated screening for these diseases earlier in their evolution, but reliable methods for early diagnosis remain elusive. We have demonstrated that dysregulated expression of minichromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins 2–7 is characteristic of early epithelial carcinogenesis, and that these key DNA replication initiation factors can be used as diagnostic markers for cervical and genito-urinary tract cancer. In this study, we investigated whether minichromosome maintenance protein 5 (Mcm5) can be used to detect oesophageal cancer cells in gastric aspirates. Two monoclonal antibodies raised against His-tagged human Mcm5 were used in a time-resolved immunofluorometric assay to measure Mcm5 levels in cells isolated from gastric aspirates of 40 patients undergoing gastroscopy for suspected or known oesophageal carcinoma or symptoms of dyspepsia. The test discriminated with high specificity and sensitivity between patients with and without oesophageal cancer (85% sensitivity (95% confidence interval (CI)=62–97%), 85% specificity (CI=66–96%)), as demonstrated by the large area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (0.93 (95% CI=0.85–0.99)). Elevated levels of Mcm5 in gastric aspirates are highly predictive of oesophageal cancer. This simple test for oesophageal cancer is readily automated with potential applications in primary diagnosis, surveillance and screening

New regulation of the Minister of Transportation, Construction and Maritime Economy on the Technical Conditions to be met by buildings and their location valid beginning of the year 2014 tightens requirements for thermal insulation of the building envelope. These changes are the result of the implementation in Poland of Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union on the energy performance of buildings. The aim of the changes is to reduce the amount of energy needed to meet the demand of buildings on the heat, and the consequence is a gradual lowering of indices demand for non-primary energy (EP) and heat transfer coefficients (U) with the beginning of years 2017 and 2021. The article presents changes of the regulations over the past fifty years in Poland and an influence of the last changes of technical conditions on issues related to installation of buildings facades undergoing thermal renovation, and their further exploitation, and also issue of the thermal renovation of buildings, which the investments of thermo renovation have been carried out in previous years, however, does not meet the new requirements of the current regulation. Examples of one, two, and three layers wall was examined in terms of fulfill the new Technical Condition requirements. Shortly described potential influence of increasing thickness of walls on issue related to fixing of thermal insulation on facades, with humidity and microbiological pollution of facades and also properties of basic thermal insulation materials for insulation buildings walls
