    Spin Hall and longitudinal conductivity of a conserved spin current in two dimensional heavy-hole gases

    The spin Hall and longitudinal conductivity of a 2D heavy-hole gas with {\it k}-cubic Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction is studied in the ac frequency domain. Using Kubo linear-response theory and a recently proposed definition for the (conserved) spin current operator suitable for spin-3/2 holes, it is shown that the spin conductivity tensor exhibit very distinguishable features from those obtained with the standard definition of the spin current. This is due to a significant contribution of the spin-torque term arisen from the alternative definition of spin current which strongly affects the magnitude and the sign of the dynamic spin current. In the dc (free of disorder) limit, the spin Hall conductivity for only (or dominant) {\it k}-cubic Rashba coupling is σxys,z(0)=9e/8π\sigma^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-9e/8\pi, whereas σxys,z(0)=3e/8π\sigma^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-3e/8\pi for only (or dominant) {\it k}-cubic Dresselhaus coupling. Such anisotropic response is understood in terms of the absence of mapping the {\it k}-cubic Rashba \leftrightarrow Dresselhaus Hamiltonians. This asymmetry is also responsible for the non-vanishing dc spin Hall conductivity (σxys,z(0)=6e/8π\sigma^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-6e/8\pi) when the Rashba and Dresselhaus parameters have the same strength, in contrast with its corresponding case for electrons.     Removal of Lead and Arsenic from Aqueous Solution by Biochar Produced from Locally-Sourced Biomass

    This study evaluated the effectiveness of four adsorbent materials, pyrolyzed corn stover, orange peel, pistachio shell, and magnetic biochar for their ability to adsorb lead (Pb) and arsenic (As III, As V) from aqueous solution. An increase in adsorption was seen as the pH of the solution increased from pH 2 to pH 6. Magnetic orange peel biochar with Fe3O4 particles precipitated on the surface of biochar was synthetized by co-precipitation and used for arsenic adsorption. Initial pH value had an influence on the adsorption behavior of As (III) and As (V). In the pH range of 2–6, As (V) adsorption was observed to decrease with increasing pH, with highest adsorption occurring at pH 2; As (III) adsorption had the highest capacity around pH 4–6

    Spin torque contribution to the a.c. spin Hall conductivity

    Using the recently proposed definition of a conserved spin-current operator [J. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 076604 (2006)] we explore the frequency dependent spin Hall conductivity for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction in response to an oscillating electric field. We show that the optical spectrum of the spin Hall conductivity exhibit remarkable changes when the new definition of spin current is applied. Such behavior is mainly due to a significant contribution of the spin torque term which is absent in the conventional form of the spin current. In addition, it is observed that the magnitude and direction of the dynamic spin Hall current strongly depends on the electric field frequency as with the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling strengths.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, pape

    One of the non-microbiological factors of greatest importance that influence the quality of meat is the oxidative process that can be generated during the manipulation of the meat or during antemortem events, such as diseases, malnutrition or transport conditions. In order to decrease these reactions andprolong the shelf life of the meat, strategies have been generated such as the addition of antioxidant phytochemicals in the diet of meat-producing animals. Rabbit meat (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) is considered to be a functional food due to its high content of omega –3 and –6 acids, as well asfor the benefits that it has for health. This study addresses the analysis of pertinent information for the inclusion of antioxidant phytochemicals in the diet of meat-producing rabbits, and the review of research studies performed in this theme.Uno de los factores no microbiológicos de mayor importancia que influyen la calidad de la carne es el proceso oxidativo que puede ser generado durante la manipulación de la carne o durante eventos antemortem, tales como enfermedades, malnutrición o condiciones de traslado.     Spin Precession and Oscillations in Mesoscopic Systems

    We compare and contrast magneto-transport oscillations in the fully quantum (single-electron coherent) and classical limits for a simple but illustrative model. In particular, we study the induced magnetization and spin current in a two-terminal double-barrier structure with an applied Zeeman field between the barriers and spin disequilibrium in the contacts. Classically, the spin current shows strong tunneling resonances due to spin precession in the region between the two barriers. However, these oscillations are distinguishable from those in the fully coherent case, for which a proper treatment of the electron phase is required. We explain the differences in terms of the presence or absence of coherent multiple wave reflections.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Nitroxide-Functionalized Graphene Oxide from Graphite Oxide

    A facile method for preparing functionalized graphene oxide single layers with nitroxide groups is reported herein. Highly oxidized graphite oxide (GO=90.6%) was obtained, slightly modifying an improved Hummer’s method. Oxoammonium salts (OS) were investigated to introduce nitroxide groups to GO, resulting in a one-step functionalization and exfoliation. The mechanisms of functionalization/exfoliation are proposed, where the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to ketone groups, and the formation of alkoxyamine species are suggested. Two kinds of functionalized graphene oxide layers (GOFT1 and GOFT2) were obtained by controlling the amount of OS added. GOFT1 and GOFT2 exhibited a high interlayer spacing (d0001 = 1.12nm), which was determined by X-ray diffraction. The presence of new chemical bonds C-N (~9.5 %) and O-O (~4.3 %) from nitroxide attached onto graphene layers were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Single-layers of GOFT1 were observed by HRTEM, exhibiting amorphous and crystalline zones at a 50:50 ratio; in contrast, layers of GOFT2 exhibited a fully amorphous surface. Fingerprint of GOFT1 single layers was obtained by electron diffraction at several tilts. Finally, the potential use of these materials within Nylon 6 matrices was investigated, where an unusual simultaneous increase in tensile stress, tensile strain and Young’s modulus was observed

    Scanning, non-contact, hybrid broadband diffuse optical spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy system

    A scanning system for small animal imaging using non-contact, hybrid broadband diffuse optical spectroscopy (ncDOS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (ncDCS) is presented. The ncDOS uses a two-dimensional spectrophotometer retrieving broadband (610-900 nm) spectral information from up to fifty-seven source-detector distances between 2 and 5 mm. The ncDCS data is simultaneously acquired from four source-detector pairs. The sample is scanned in two dimensions while tracking variations in height. The system has been validated with liquid phantoms, demonstrated in vivo on a human fingertip during an arm cuff occlusion and on a group of mice with xenoimplanted renal cell carcinoma.     Pre-clinical longitudinal monitoring of hemodynamic response to anti-vascular chemotherapy by hybrid diffuse optics

    The longitudinal effect of an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) antibody (DC 101) therapy on a xenografted renal cell carcinoma (RCC) mouse model was monitored using hybrid diffuse optics. Two groups of immunosuppressed male nude mice (seven treated, seven controls) were measured. Tumor microvascular blood flow, total hemoglobin concentration and blood oxygenation were investigated as potential biomarkers for the monitoring of the effect of therapy twice a week and were related to the final treatment outcome. These hemodynamic biomarkers have shown a clear differentiation between two groups by day four. Moreover, we have observed that pre-treatment values and early changes in hemodynamics are highly correlated with the therapeutic outcome demonstrating the potential of diffuse optics to predict the therapy response at an early time point.     Effect of bulk inversion asymmetry on the Datta-Das transistor

    A model of the Datta-Das spin field-effect transistor is presented which, in addition to the Rashba interaction, takes into account the influence of bulk inversion asymmetry of zinc-blende semiconductors. In the presence of bulk inversion asymmetry, the conductance is found to depend significantly on the crystallographic orientation of the channel.     Ballistic spin-polarized transport and Rashba spin precession in semiconductor nanowires

    We present numerical calculations of the ballistic spin-transport properties of quasi-one-dimensional wires in the presence of the spin-orbit (Rashba) interaction. A tight-binding analog of the Rashba Hamiltonian which models the Rashba effect is used. By varying the robustness of the Rashba coupling and the width of the wire, weak and strong coupling regimes are identified. Perfect electron spin-modulation is found for the former regime, regardless of the incident Fermi energy and mode number. In the latter however, the spin-conductance has a strong energy dependence due to a nontrivial subband intermixing induced by the strong Rashba coupling. This would imply a strong suppression of the spin-modulation at higher temperatures and source-drain voltages.
