Sucrose-fueled, energy dissipative, transient formation of molecular hydrogels mediated by yeast activity

A biologically mediated, energy dissipative, reversible formation of fibrillar networks is reported. The process of gelation is linked to sucrose-fueled production of CO2 by baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). A Dual Stimuli Responsive Supramolecular Gel Provides Insulin Hydrolysis Protection and Redox-Controlled Release of Actives

Two supramolecular hydrogelators containing a central disulfide moiety and terminal carboxylic acid groups are studied. On the one hand, the hydrogels are responsive to a reductive environment, which transforms the disulfide unit to the corresponding thiols. On the other hand, the hydrogels show pH response associated with the presence of carboxylic acid units. Gels are formed at pH below ≈4 while at higher pH values, ionization of the gela-tors provokes gel disassembly. The properties of the gel are exploited for the release, as a proof of concept, of Bromophenol Blue in the presence of the reducing species tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride. Additionally, insulin is loaded into the hydrogels and protected from hydrolysis with simu-lated gastric fluid containing pepsin. Quantitative release of unaltered insulin, checked with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay colorimetric assay, is observed upon treatment with pH 7.4 buffer. Comunicación cooperativa entre la escuela y la familia

IV JORNADAS DE DESARROLLO HUMANO Y EDUCACIÓN. Educar para el Cambio: Escenarios para el desarrollo humano.6-7-8-9 Septiembre de 2005. Universidad de Alcalá de HenaresEl programa comunicación cooperativa entre la escuela y la familia tiene por objetivo principal que la cooperación escuela familia forme parte de los elementos organizativos básicos y cotidianos de los centros escolares. El programa forma parte de un clásico proyecto comunitario "Family Matters" dirigido U. Brofenbrener y M. Cochran del Human Development de la Universidad de Cornell. El programa señala su fuerte compromiso con dos conceptos relacionados entre sí, la toma de decisiones compartida y la potenciación mutua entre padres y profesores. La estrategia que persigue es doble: a) entrenar a un equipo de facilitadores de cada uno de los centros escolares participantes. Este equipo está constituido por 5-7 miembros: 2-3 padres, 1-2 profesores, dirección, otro). Este equipo será el encargado, por una parte, de realizar los talleres para padres y el seminario de profesores y, por otra, de dinamizar la colaboración y la comunicación entre los padres y los profesores b) diseñar una estructura de apoyo a dicho equipo de facilitadores. El programa incluye el material necesario para desarrollar un Taller de cinco semanas para padres, un seminario de 10 horas para profesores y la realización de una sesión conjunta entre padres, profesores y equipo directivo. Además, le acompaña un manual para entrenamiento de los facilitadores. La evaluación del programa ha resultado ser muy positiva y que podemos resumir con la frase de A. Henderson en el Informe la evidencia continua creciendo: “los estudiantes aprenden más y mejor cuando sus padres se implican en su educación”

A peer tutoring experience in primary school to improve reading comprehension and social skills

En este artículo se presenta una experiencia de tutoría entre iguales fija realizada en dos aulas de Educación Primaria. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los efectos de este método en la comprensión lectora y las habilidades sociales del alumnado. Para ello se emparejó al alumnado de primero (tutorados) con el de tercer curso (tutores) para que trabajaran conjuntamente y de forma cooperativa la competencia lectora. La investigación combina un diseño cuasi-experimental pretest postest sin grupo control con los datos recogidos mediante entrevistas y grupos de discusión. El análisis de dicha información se ha realizado a través de la prueba t-Student y el análisis de contenido. Los resultados muestran mejoras estadísticamente significativas en la comprensión lectora de los tutorados y en las habilidades sociales de tutores y tutorados, resultados que se complementan y son consistentes con los hallados en el análisis cualitativo.This paper presents a peer tutoring experience conducted in two Primary Education classrooms. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of this method on students’ reading comprehension and social skills. First year students (tutees) and third year students (tutors) were matched to work reading skills cooperatively. The research combines a quasi-experimental pretest postest no control group with information gathered through interviews and focus groups. The quantitative analysis was carried out by implantation of the Student-t test and qualitative analysis through a content analysis. Results show statistically significant improvements in the reading comprehension skills of the tutees and the social skills of both, tutors and tutees. These results are consistent with those found in the qualitative analysis

Molecular recognition through divalent interactions with a self-assembled fibrillar network of a supramolecular organogel

The interaction of phenol derivatives with the self-assembled fibrillar network of two different supramolecular gels has been studied. NMR relaxometry reveals the selective interaction of resorcinol over other related molecules with a gel formed by the gelator 2 which contains terminal pyridine units. No selectivity is observed for a related gelator that contains phenyl instead of pyridine moieties. The selectivity observed by NMR experiments permits the selective suppression of the 1H NMR signals of resorcinol. This behaviour is translated to macroscopic properties such as the thermal stability of the gels. The observed selectivity together with X-ray diffraction data and molecular modelling suggest that the gels formed by 2 present arrays of pyridine H-bond acceptor groups capable of selective multivalent interaction with phenolic substrate

Remarkable increase in basicity associated with supramolecular gelation

L-Proline derivatives which are able to form supramolecular gels show an amazing basicity increase in the aggregated (gel) state as compared to solution. As a result they behave as enantioselective catalysts for the aldol reaction in solution but produce a base-catalyzed aldol racemisation in the gel stat

La vida musical en Valencia durante la Guerra Civil (1936-1939): Percepción de la vida musical valenciana a través de la prensa y otras fuentes documentales

Valencia's musical life of the thirties lived a flourishing of groups and societies that fomented and dynamized the musical culture of the city filling its halls and theaters of concerts, zarzuelas and musical theater. With the exception of the opera that lived a state of lethargy both the zarzuela and the musical theatre were programmed with several daily titles in many of the theaters. The Philharmonic Society of Valencia was the undisputed protagonist of symphonic programming as well as chamber music with a continuous and varied seasons that brought together international stars as well as the most outstanding national performers. Next to this the Valencia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro José Manuel Izquierdo, was the best example of the efforts to endow the city with a serious project that could rival the best ensembles in the country in the divulgation and interpretation of the symphonic repertoire. But with the arrival of the Civil War in Spain every sign of cultural and musical vitality was stopped by the cruelty of the moment. The musical profession, in crisis since the advent of talking pictures, was compounded his difficulties with the outbreak of the conflict. While music education disappeared daily musical activity, their schedules and contracting remained in minimum records and with many difficulties. Despite all the musical theater, with the exception of opera, maintained a vigorous life, allowing the Valencian public, at least for a few hours, to escape from the difficult situation that plagued their lives. Even with all the difficulties the city could enjoy a musical program that would be difficult to imagine arriving to hold concerts until in the moments of greater virulence of the bleeding conflict.La vida musical de la Valencia de los 30 vivió un florecimiento de agrupaciones y sociedades que fomentaban y dinamizaban la cultura musical de la ciudad llenando sus salas y teatros de conciertos y espectáculos líricos y de teatro musical. Con la excepción de la ópera que vivía un estado de letargo tanto la zarzuela como la revista musical se programaban con varios títulos diarios en muchas de las salas. La Sociedad Filarmónica de Valencia fue la protagonista indiscutible de la programación sinfónica así como de la música de cámara con una programación continua y variada que reunía tanto a estrellas internacionales como a los más destacados intérpretes nacionales. Junto a ésta la Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia, dirigida por el incansable maestro José Manuel Izquierdo fue el mejor exponente de los esfuerzos por dotar a la ciudad de un proyecto serio que pudiese rivalizar con los mejores conjuntos del país en la divulgación e interpretación del repertorio sinfónico más selecto. Pero con la llegada de la Guerra Civil a España todo signo de vitalidad cultural y musical era frenado por la crueldad del momento. La profesión musical, en plena crisis desde la aparición del cine sonoro, vio agravadas sus dificultades con el desencadenamiento del conflicto. Mientras la educación musical desapareció del día a día la actividad musical, sus programaciones y las contrataciones se mantuvieron bajo mínimos no con pocas dificultades. Pese a todo algunos de los géneros de teatro lírico, con la excepción de la ópera, mantuvieron una vida vigorosa, permitiendo que el público valenciano pudiese, al menos durante unas horas, evadirse de la difícil situación que asolaba sus vidas. Aun con todas las dificultades la ciudad pudo gozar de una programación musical seria difícil de imaginar llegándose a celebrar conciertos hasta en los momentos de mayor virulencia del sangrante conflicto.La vida musical de la València dels 30 va viure un augment d'agrupacions i societats que fomentaven i dinamitzaven la cultura musical de la ciutat omplint les seues sales i teatres de concerts i espectacles lírics i de teatre musical. Amb l'excepció de l'òpera que vivia un estat de letargia tant la sarsuela com la revista musical es programaven amb diversos títols diaris en moltes de les sales. La Societat Filarmònica de València va ser la protagonista indiscutible de la programació simfònica així com de la música de cambra amb una programació contínua i variada que reunia tant a estrelles internacionals com als més destacats intèrprets nacionals. Al costat d'aquesta l'Orquestra Simfònica de València, dirigida per l'incansable mestre José Manuel Izquierdo va ser el millor exponent dels esforços per dotar la ciutat d'un projecte seriós que pogués rivalitzar amb els millors conjunts del país en la divulgació i interpretació del repertori simfònic més selecte. Però amb l'arribada de la Guerra Civil a Espanya tot signe de vitalitat cultural i musical era frenat per la crueltat del moment. La professió musical, enmig d'una gran crisi des de l'aparició del cinema sonor, va vore agreujades les seues dificultats amb l'inici del conflicte. Mentre l'educació musical desaparegué del dia a dia l'activitat musical va poder continuar, amb les seues programacions i les contractacions baix registres mínims, amb no poques dificultats. Tot i això el teatre musical, amb l'excepció de l'òpera, va mantenir una vida vigorosa, permetent al públic valencià, almenys durant unes hores, evadir-se de la difícil situació que assolava le seues vides.
