On-off intermittency and amplitude-phase synchronization in Keplerian shear flows
We study the development of coherent structures in local simulations of the
magnetorotational instability in accretion discs in regimes of on-off
intermittency. In a previous paper [Chian et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 254102
(2010)], we have shown that the laminar and bursty states due to the on-off
spatiotemporal intermittency in a one-dimensional model of nonlinear waves
correspond, respectively, to nonattracting coherent structures with higher and
lower degrees of amplitude-phase synchronization. In this paper we extend these
results to a three-dimensional model of magnetized Keplerian shear flows.
Keeping the kinetic Reynolds number and the magnetic Prandtl number fixed, we
investigate two different intermittent regimes by varying the plasma beta
parameter. The first regime is characterized by turbulent patterns interrupted
by the recurrent emergence of a large-scale coherent structure known as
two-channel flow, where the state of the system can be described by a single
Fourier mode. The second regime is dominated by the turbulence with sporadic
emergence of coherent structures with shapes that are reminiscent of a
perturbed channel flow. By computing the Fourier power and phase spectral
entropies in three-dimensions, we show that the large-scale coherent structures
are characterized by a high degree of amplitude-phase synchronization.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Automating Self Evaluations for Software Engineers
Software engineers frequently compose self-evaluations as part of employee perfor- mance reviews. These evaluations can be a key artifact for assessing a software engineer’s contributions to a team and organization, and for generating useful feed- back. Self-evaluations can be challenging because a) they can be time consuming, b) individuals may forget about important contributions especially when the review period is long such as a full year, c) some individuals can consciously or unconsciously overstate their contributions, and d) some individuals can be reluctant to describe their contributions for fear of appearing too proud [24].
UNBIASED, Useful New Basic Interactive Automated Self-Evaluation Demon- stration, is a web application designed to tackle the challenges of performing a self- evaluation by automatically gathering data from existing third party APIs, perform- ing an analysis on the data, and generating a self-evaluation starting point for soft- ware engineers to build off. The third party APIs currently supported are: Bitbucket, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, and JIRA
Vorticity statistics and the time scales of turbulent strain
Time scales of turbulent strain activity, denoted as the strain persistence times of first and second order, are obtained from time-dependent expectation values and correlation functions of Lagrangian rate-of-strain eigenvalues taken in particularly defined statistical ensembles. Taking into account direct numerical simulation data, our approach relies on heuristic closure hypotheses which allow us to establish a connection between the statistics of vorticity and strain. It turns out that softly divergent prefactors correct the usual “1/s” strain time-scale estimate of standard turbulence phenomenology, in a way which is consistent with the phenomenon of vorticity intermittency.Indisponível
Behaviorism reception in Argentina and Brazil: A study of two universities, 1960-1970
We look deeply at two examples: the Universidad Nacional de San Luis and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. In Argentina, the first psychological courses took place during the late 1950s and early 1960s when behaviorism was widely criticized. In the 1970s, exceptionally in San Luis, there was a group of students and young psychologists that were receptive to its model for ideological, professional and scientific reasons. In Brazil, during those decades, the creation of psychology undergraduate courses started to spread. Behaviorism has circulated through the didactic laboratory of beha- vior analysis in those psychology courses. The reception of behaviorism in these countries helps us to understand the circulation of psychological knowledge in different places. It also shows us how each one of these places incorporated behaviorism uniquely into its own context.Fil: Polanco, Fernando Andrés. Environmental regulation and international trade patterns for agro-industrial under a South-North Perspective
This paper aims at examining the relation between the international trade and the environment, particularly focused on sensitive agribusiness sectors. It consists on an empirical test to the conflicting positions supported by economists, some following the traditional approach (trade-off or neoclassical), while others supporting the Porter’s hypothesis, which considers that impacts of the stricter environmental regulation can benefit the trade competitiveness. A Heckscher-Ohlin- Vanek model was applied to net exports as the dependent variable. The agricultural products analyzed were total agriculture, rice, maize, soybean, wheat, dairy and swine; run for 97 countries, divided as developing and developed, in a cross-section approach. This modeling allows including the environmental endowment as explanatory variables. Moreover the Environmental Performance Index (Esty et al, 2008) was also tried as explanatory variables in order to catch any effect of the environmental regulation on the trade patterns. Results were not conclusively as they show that the net exports of the selected products, considered environmentally sensitive, can be affected even positively or negatively (neoclassical approach) by the environmental regulation. The results depend on the products. A remarkable outcome to highlight is that the dummy for developing countries and developed countries was significant, pointing that for rice, for example, it makes difference being a developing country, as well as it does for wheat, being a developed country.Trade, environmental regulation, agribusiness, Environmental Economics and Policy, International Relations/Trade,
Unusual signals in a halo catheter: what is the mechanism?
In this "featured arrhythmia" article we present a set of unusual intracardiac electrode tracings that were recorded in a patient with typical clockwise flutter but a very dilated right atrium. The potential mechanism underlying this phenomenon is discussed with reference to the current literature
Karyotype description of Cephalotrigona femorata Smith (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and the C-banding pattern as a specific marker for Cephalotrigona
Cephalotrigona femorata (Smith, 1854) was submitted to cytogenetic techniques to study and describe its karyotype. Conventional staining allowed the counting (2n=34) and observation of chromosome morphology. The amount and distribution of heterochromatin in this species was different from Cephalotrigona capitata (Smith, 1854), another species of the genus already analyzed. Our results indicate that heterochromatin a potential marker for the genus, at least for the species found in Brazil. This region was marked by DAPI, revealing a high content of A:T. The CMA3 marked two pairs, and it seems to be polymorphic in one pair
Palabras claves: envejecimiento, memoria, inteligencia inteligencia fluida,funcionalidad./ABSTRACT:The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of cognitive aging in elderly, equally distributed according to their level of instruction. 44 subjects were evaluated in order to identify their cognitive variables through the application of a neuropsychological battery; they were distributed in three groups:14 subjects with elementary education completed, 16 subjects with high education completed, and 14 subjects with tertiary education completed. The results showed a positive and significant correlation between functionality and working memory, that is, a lower performance in working memory is related with a greater functional deterioration. In relation to the factors that predict functionality in older people, it was possible to conclude that executive functions can be predictors of functionality in this group. Evidence showed that executive functions and episodic memory are predictors of functionality and intelligence in the elderly, becoming potential and useful evaluation measures in the assessment of this group.Key words: aging, memory, fluent intelligence, functionin
