    Steady and unsteady laminar flows of newtonian and generalized newtonian fluids in a planar T-junction

    An investigation of laminar steady and unsteady flows in a two-dimensional T-junction was carried out for Newtonian and a non-Newtonian fluid analogue to blood. The flow conditions considered are of relevance to hemodynamical applications and the localization of coronary diseases, and the main objective was to quantify the accuracy of the predictions and to provide benchmark data that are missing for this prototypical geometry. Under steady flow, calculations were performed for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and extraction flow rate ratios, and accurate data for the recirculation sizes were obtained and are tabulated. The two recirculation zones increased with Reynolds number, but the behaviour was non-monotonic with the flow rate ratio. For the pulsating flows a periodic instability was found, which manifests itself by the breakdown of the main vortex into two pieces and the subsequent advection of one of them, while the secondary vortex in the main duct was absent for a sixth of the oscillating period. Shear stress maxima were found on the walls opposite the recirculations, where the main fluid streams impinge onto the walls. For the blood analogue fluid, the recirculations were found to be 10% longer but also short lived than the corresponding Newtonian eddies, and the wall shear stresses are also significantly different especially in the branch duct

    Gravity-driven instability in a spherical Hele-Shaw cell

    A pair of concentric spheres separated by a small gap form a spherical Hele-Shaw cell. In this cell an interfacial instability arises when two immiscible fluids flow. We derive the equation of motion for the interface perturbation amplitudes, including both pressure and gravity drivings, using a mode coupling approach. Linear stability analysis shows that mode growth rates depend upon interface perimeter and gravitational force. Mode coupling analysis reveals the formation of fingering structures presenting a tendency toward finger tip-sharpening.Comment: 13 pages, 4 ps figures, RevTex, to appear in Physical Review

    The Saffman-Taylor problem addresses the morphological instability of an interface separating two immiscible, viscous fluids when they move in a narrow gap between two flat parallel plates (Hele-Shaw cell). In this work, we extend the classic Saffman-Taylor situation, by considering the flow between two curved, closely spaced, concentric spheres (spherical Hele-Shaw cell). We derive the mode-coupling differential equation for the interface perturbation amplitudes and study both linear and nonlinear flow regimes. The effect of the spherical cell (positive) spatial curvature on the shape of the interfacial patterns is investigated. We show that stability properties of the fluid-fluid interface are sensitive to the curvature of the surface. In particular, it is found that positive spatial curvature inhibits finger tip-splitting. Hele-Shaw flow on weakly negative, curved surfaces is briefly discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, RevTex, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Dinuclear pyridine-4-thiolate-bridged rhodium and iridium complexes as ditopic building blocks in molecular architecture

    A series of dinuclear pyridine-4-thiolate (4-Spy)-bridged rhodium and iridium compounds [M(μ-4-Spy)(diolef)]2 [diolef = 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod), M = Rh (1), Ir (2); diolef = 2,5-norbornadiene (nbd), M = Rh (3)] were prepared by the reaction of Li(4-Spy) with the appropriate compound [M(μ-Cl)(diolef)]2 (M = Rh, Ir). The dinuclear compound [Rh(μ-4-Spy)(CO)(PPh3)]2 (4) was obtained by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh3)] (acac = acetylacetonate) with 4-pySH. Compounds 1-4 were assessed as metalloligands in self-assembly reactions with the cis-blocked acceptors [M(cod)(NCCH3)2](BF 4) [M = Rh (a), Ir (b)] and [M(H2O)2(dppp)] (OTf)2 [M = Pd (c), Pt (d); dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane] . The homometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{M2(μ-4-Spy) 2(cod)2}2{M(cod)}2](BF 4)2 (M = Rh [(1a)2], Ir [(2b)2]) and the heterometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy) 2(cod)2}2{Ir(cod)}2](BF 4)2 [(1b)2], [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy) 2(cod)2}2{M′(dppp)}2](OTf) 4 (M′ = Pd [(1c)2], Pt [(1d)2]), and [{Ir2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M′ (dppp)}2](OTf)4 (M′ = Pd [(2c)2], Pt [(2d)2]) were obtained. NMR spectroscopy in combination with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to elucidate the nature of the metalloligands and their respective supramolecular assemblies. Most of the synthesized species were found to be nonrigid in solution, and their fluxional behavior was studied by variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. An X-ray diffraction study of the assemblies (1a)2 and (1d)2 revealed the formation of rectangular (9.6 Å × 6.6 Å) hexanuclear metallomacrocycles with alternating dinuclear (Rh2) and mononuclear (Rh or Pt) corners.     Di-aryl guanidinium derivatives: Towards improved α2-Adrenergic affinity and antagonist activity

    Compounds with excellent receptor engagement displaying alpha(2)-AR antagonist activity are useful not only for therapeutic purposes (e.g. antidepressants), but also to help in the crystallization of this particular GPCR. Therefore, based on our broad experience in the topic, we have prepared eighteen di-aryl (phenyl and/or pyridin-2-yl) mono- or di-substituted guanidines and 2-aminoimidazolines. The in vitro alpha(2)-AR binding affinity experiments in human brain tissue showed the advantage of a 2-aminoimidazolinium cation, a di-arylmethylene core, a conformationally locked pyridin-2-yl-guanidine and a di-substituted guanidinium to achieve good alpha(2)-AR engagement. After different in vitro [S-35]GTP gamma S binding experiments in human prefrontal cortex tissue, it was possible to identify that compounds 7a, 7b and 7c were alpha(2)-AR partial agonist, whereas 8h was a potent alpha(2)-AR antagonist. Docking and MD studies with a model of alpha(2A)-AR and two crystal structures suggest that antagonism is achieved by compounds carrying a di-substituted guanidine which substituent occupy a pocket adjacent to TM5 without engaging S200(5.42) or S204(5.46), and a mono-substituted cationic group, which favorably interacts with E94(2.65).
