    Ceramide is a Mediator of Apoptosis in Retina Photoreceptors

    PURPOSE. The precise mechanisms involved in photoreceptor apoptosis are still unclear. We here investigated the role of ceramide, a sphingolipid precursor that induces apoptosis upon cellular stress, in activating this death in photoreceptors. METHODS. Rat retina neuronal cultures, with or without docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), were treated with the ceramide analog acetylsphingosine (C2-ceramide), and with a glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor. Ceramide synthesis in cultures treated with the oxidant paraquat was evaluated with [3H]palmitate. The effect of inhibitors of ceramide de novo synthesis, fumonisin B1 and cycloserine, on photoreceptor apoptosis was investigated. Apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and Bcl-2 expression were determined. RESULTS. Addition of C2-ceramide induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Paraquat increased formation of [3H]ceramide in photoreceptors, compared to controls, while inhibition of ceramide synthesis, immediately before paraquat treatment, prevented paraquat-induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Fumonisin also reduced photoreceptor apoptosis during early development in vitro. DHA, the retina major polyunsaturated fatty acid, which protects photoreceptors from oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, completely blocked C2-ceramide-induced photoreceptor death, simultaneously increasing Bcl-2 expression. Inhibiting glucosylceramide synthase, which catalyzes ceramide glucosylation, before ceramide or paraquat treatment blocked DHA protective effect. CONCLUSIONS. Our results suggest that oxidative stress stimulated an increase in ceramide levels, which induced photoreceptor apoptosis. DHA prevented oxidative stress and ceramide damage by up regulating Bcl-2 expression and glucosylating ceramide, thus decreasing its intracellular concentration. This shows for the first time that ceramide is a critical mediator for triggering photoreceptor apoptosis in mammalian retina and suggests that modulating ceramide levels might provide a therapeutic tool for preventing photoreceptor death in neurodegenerative diseases.Fil: German, Olga Lorena.     Effectiveness if traditional games compared with technological games in classroom climate and student's performance in the EFL classroom : a quasi-experimental research

    Tesis (Pedagogía en Inglés)The present study intended to corroborate the hypothesis that both technological and traditional games can help school students in their learning process and that traditional games unlike technological ones, also help in the creation of a better classroom climate. Through a quasi-experiment in three different educational settings, control groups and experimental ones were going to be measured both in students’ performance expressed in marks and in classroom climate measured with a sociometric test. Chile’s current national contingency has prevented this study to be concluded as expected. As an alternative outcome, the researchers carried out a perception study that compared student’s acceptance of both technological and traditional games. The result of this study shows that current students, who are digital natives, showed a slight preference for traditional games over the technological ones, defying the common belief that students only react positively to technology.El presente estudio pretende corroborar la hipótesis de que tanto los juegos tecnológicos como los tradicionales pueden ayudar a los alumnos en su proceso de aprendizaje y que los juegos tradicionales a diferencia de los tecnológicos pueden ayudar, además en la creación de un mejor clima de aula. A través de un cuasi-experimento en tres diferentes establecimientos educacionales, en los grupo de control y experimentales se iba a medir tanto el rendimiento de los estudiantes expresado a través de sus calificaciones, como el clima de aula medido a través de un cuestionario sociométrico. La actual contingencia nacional de Chile ha impedido que este estudio concluya según lo previsto. Como alternativa, los investigadores llevaron a cabo un estudio de percepción que comparó la aceptación de los estudiantes hacia los juegos tecnológicos y tradicionales. El resultado de este estudio muestra que los estudiantes, siendo nativos digitales. mostraron una ligera preferencia por los juegos tradicionales por sobre los tecnológicos, desafiando la creencia general de que los estudiantes solo reaccionan positivamente ante la tecnología

    Victims and perpetrators of feminicide in the language of the Mexican written press

    This study investigates the language used by national newspapers in Mexico: “El Universal”, “La Jornada”, “Milenio”, and “Reforma”, when addressing the issue of feminicide regarding victims and perpetrators, as well as their relationship with the gender of the reporter and with each newspaper. The research is based on the analysis of qualitative content and the theoretical framework of framing. Categories were built on the type of language in cases of feminicide of 360 journalistic texts published during 2017: 1) Narrative of feminicide; 2) Justification of the perpetrator or alleged perpetrator; 3) Social issues; 4) Blaming the victim. The analysis yielded cases of victim blaming to a lesser extent than those of the perpetrator's justification. Aspects of the narration of feminicide stood out both by the gender of the reporter and by the media in the four newspapers, from two perspectives: 1) The fact, the follow-up, or the context; 2) The fact, legal aspects, and statistics. Reporters, men and women, tend to justify the perpetrator; male reporters blame the victim more than female reporters; and female reporters contextualize feminicide through social issues: social violence, impunity, and failures in legal processes. “La Jornada” is inclined towards social issues, while “El Universal” tends to justify the perpetrator
