    Evaluation of Banana (Musa spp.) Cultivars for Growth, Yield, and Fruit Quality

    አህፅሮት ይህ ጥናት የተካሄደው ዘጠኝ (አራት ከውጪ የገቡ እና  አምስት ከሀገር ውስጥ የተሰበሰቡ) የሙዝ ዝርያዎችና አንድ በመመረት ላይ የሚገኝ የማወዳደሪያ ዝርያ በአራት የተለያዩ የሀገሪቱ አካባቢዎች ለሁለት የምርት ዓመታት ያላቸውን የዕድገት፣ ምርት እና ጥራት ሁኔታ ለመገምገም ነበር፡፡ በእያንዳንዱ የሙከራ ቦታ እያንዳንዱ ዝርያ ሶስት ጊዜ በተለያየ ረድፍ ተተክሎ አስፈላጊው እንክብካቤ እየተደረገላቸው ተገምግመዋል፡፡ የተገኘው መረጃ እንደሚያመለክተው በተክል ቁመት፣ ተተክሎ ማበብ እስከሚጀምር እና ተተክሎ ምርት እስከሚደርስ በሚወስደው ጊዜ፣ በአምባዛ (ዘለላ) ክብደት፣ በፍሬ ውፍረት፣ በፍሬ ርዝመት፣ በፍሬ ክብደት፣ በምርት መጠን፣ በልጣጭ ውፍረት፣ የሚበላው ክፍል ከልጣጩ ጋር ባለው ጥምርታ፣ በሚሟሙ ጠጣሮች መጠን፣ በአሲድ መጠን፣ በፒኤች፣ በፍሬ እርጥበት እና በፍሬ የአመድ ይዘት መጠን በዝርያዎች መካከል ከፍተኛ ልዩነት ተመዝግቧል፡ እንደአጠቃላይ ዝርያዎቹ አጭርና ወፍራም ተክል (ግንድ) ነበራቸው፡፡ ዝርያዎቹ ተተክለው እስኪያብቡ ከ243.8 እስከ 316.8 ቀናት እንዲሁም ተተክለው ምርታቸው እስኪሰበሰብ ከ374.4 እስከ 446.7 ቀናት ወስዶባቸዋል፡፡ የሁሉም የሙከራ አካባቢዎች አማካይ የምርት መጠን ከ43.67 እስከ 52.46 ቶን በሄክታር ሆኖ ተመዝግቧል፡፡ አምስት ዝርያዎች ከማወዳደሪያው ዝርያ አኳያ ተወዳዳሪ (ተመሳሳይ) የሆነ ምርት አስመዝግበዋል፡፡ በስሜት ህዋሳት አማካኝነት በተካሄደ የትንተና መረጃ መሰረት ሁሉም ዝርያዎች በቀማሾች ዘንድ ተመራጭ ሆነዋል፡፡ ከማወዳደሪያ ዝርያው አኳያ እጩ ዝርያዎች ከፍተኛ የሚሟሙ ጠጣሮች መጠን፣ ፎስፎረስ እና ፖታሲየም እንዲሁም አነስተኛ የአሲድ መጠን አስመዝግበዋል፡፡ የፍሬ እርጥበትና የአመድ ይዘት መጠን እንደቅደምተከተላቸው ከ71.53 እስከ 76.56 በመቶ እና ከ2.5 እስከ 3.36 በመቶ ሆኖ ተመዝግቧል፡፡ የዕድገት፣ የምርትና የጥራት መረጃዎችን መሰረት በማድረግ ‘ሌዲ ፊንገር’ እና ‘ድንኬ-1’ የተባሉት ዝርያዎች በዋና ዋና የሙዝ አምራች አካባቢዎች ወደምርት እንዲገቡ ምክር ተሰጥቷል፡፡   Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate four introduced and five local banana cultivars with a check variety for growth, yield and quality performances at four locations for two crop cycles. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed significant varietal differences in plant height, days to shooting, time from planting to harvest, bunch weight, finger diameter, length and weight, yield, peel thickness, pulp-to-peel ratio, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, moisture and ash contents. The cultivars had generally short and thick plants. Cultivars took from 243.8 to 316.8 days to flowering while from 374.4 to 446.7 days to first harvest. The yield ranged from 43.67 to 52.46 t ha-1. Five cultivars had comparable yields to the check. The sensory results indicated that all the cultivars were generally preferred. The candidate cultivars recorded higher soluble solids, phosphorus and potassium, but lower titratable acidity than the check. The moisture and ash contents ranged from 71.53 to 76.56% and 2.50 to 3.36%, respectively. Considering the growth and yield performances as well as fruit physicochemical and sensory characteristics, ‘Lady Finger’ and ‘Dinke-1’ are recommended for production in the major banana growing areas of Ethiopia

    Variability of physio-chemical, anti-oxidant, and sensorial quality of newly released papaya varieties in Ethiopia

    A study was carried out to investigate the physic-chemical, proximate, antioxidant, and sensorial qualities of the released papaya varieties namely, KK-103, MK-121, and CMF-078 which are widely grown in Ethiopia. Results showed that maximum in fruit physical parameters was observed for variety MK-121 and the lowest value was for CMF-078. Results of TSS, citric acid, total carotenoid, beta-carotene, and vitamin C content of the three papaya fruits were covered in the range of 10.287-12.620 (Brix), 1.455- 1.978(g/l), 12.564- 17.860 (µg/g), 2.131- 3.036 (µg/g) and 30.854-43.407 (mg /100g) respectively. The proximate compositions of papaya varieties were also analyzed and little differences were observed at p&lt;0.05. Besides, the sensory evaluation was carried out and the result showed that in variety MK-121 exhibited significantly higher values for color, flavor, sourness, and sweetness than did the other two varieties. However, the results of the sensory evaluation showed that variety CMF-078 had higher acceptability than did the other two varieties. Therefore, the author recommended that fruits of variety MK-121 could be better for fresh consumption as well as for processing purposes to enrich the food products with anti-oxidants.&nbsp;</p

    Common beans variability on physical, canning quality, nutritional, mineral, and phytate contents

    Common beans are nutrient-rich crops, an important source of protein, micro minerals (Fe and Zn), and vitamins. Varieties of beans have been releasing by the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, but for some varieties, a comprehensive nutritional content was not studied. Therefore, the study aims to identify varieties having a better nutritional quality and canning quality, besides research has to be done for profiling. Results of the present finding revealed that significant differences were observed at P ≤ 0.05 for all analyzed parameters. The seed weight/100 seed, cooking time, and percent of non-soakers were varied respectively from 17.18–53.17 g/100 seed, 30.0–51.33 min, and 0.0–4.00%, meanwhile percentage washed drained weight and hydration coefficient value was found to be 60.06–64.47%, and 1.25–1.68. Visual appearance quality parameters; starchiness, clumping, and splitting degree were also enclosed and significant differences were observed. Proximate compositions such as fiber, ash, and protein contents were covered from 4.07–7.33, 3.62–4.60 and 17.96–25.73%, respectively. Iron and Zinc values also found in the array of 0.02−36.6 and 0.49−5.45 as measured by mg/100 g, and phytate value was found to be 8.1–23. 59 mg/g. According to this research finding PAN-182, G-4445, and Roba bean varieties were found best for canning purpose and nutritional quality. Therefore, selected bean varieties should be considered for developing bean-based protein and micronutrient-rich food, canning industry, and bean breeders

    Effects of different drying methods and ascorbic acid pretreatment on carotenoids and polyphenols of papaya fruit in Ethiopia

    Abstract Frequent consumption of fruits can prevent nutrient deficiencies and promote health. However, the perishability and unaffordability of fruits had led to very low levels of fruit consumption in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the retention of nutrients and bioactive compounds of papaya fruit (Carica papaya L) with/without ascorbic acid pretreatment and drying under different techniques, to then estimate the vitamin A intakes for vulnerable population. Yellow pulp ripped papaya fruits (i.e., >75% level of skin color/stage level 4) (n = 14), with and without ascorbic acid pretreatment were dried using (a) solar drying: open‐air, tray driers, and glasshouse; (b) refractance window drying; (c) oven drying; and (d) freeze‐drying (control). The fresh fruit had high moisture content (87%) and an acidic pH. The dried papaya had a water activity of 0.5–0.6. The highest TPC, TFC, total carotenoids, and ß‐carotene were found in freeze‐dried papaya samples, followed by refractance window, and solar glass house (p < .05). The highest retention in total carotenoids (81.5%) and ß‐carotene (61.9%) relative to freeze‐drying was for the refractance‐window; 25 g of dried papaya could contribute to 38% of the retinol equivalents’ requirement for young children. Ascorbic acid pretreatment increased the retention of total carotenoids, ß‐carotene, TPC, and TFC (p < .05) by (6–11)%, (8–34)%, (7–58)%, and (6–30)%, respectively, for all the drying methods. Refractance window and solar glass house drying can improve diets and constitute a promising food systems’ intervention that can increase year‐round availability, accessibility, and affordability of vitamin A‐rich fruits like papaya
