    Conserving the Paraguay-Paraná Fluvial Corridor in the XXI Century: Conflicts, Threats, and Challenges

    The Paraguay-Paraná river system represents a unique, free-flowing corridor that extends about 3500 km southwards from the Pantanal to the Rio de la Plata estuary, crossing four countries. The absence of fragmentation along the main channels and its still well-connected floodplains have preserved longitudinal and lateral functional and structural connectivity, defining critical ecological gradients for the biota and species life cycles. The lack of dams represents a noticeable feature that benefits migratory species supporting small-scale fisheries providing food security and the conservation of other ecosystem services with associated livelihoods. The ecological integrity of this corridor could be severely affected by the potential expansion of the Hidrovía Paraguay-Paraná for improving commercial trade, the foreseen installation of new dams in the Paraná basin, in addition to other current impacts and threats. Conservation of the corridor for societal benefits, involving the sustainable development of activities associated with the use of the fluvial territory, requires maintaining the natural ecological process that sustains livelihoods and biodiversity. This calls for innovative strategies encompassing water governance process, social and environmental information related to expected impacts, a better understanding of synergies between processes, and foremost an interdisciplinary approach to design and apply integrative and multi-scale management policies.Fil: Baigún, Claudio Rafael M..     La simulazione numerica della propagazione di una frattura in MODO I, viaggiante ad elevatavelocità in un acciaio a comportamento duttile è realizzata attraverso un modello coesivo che governa ladistribuzione delle forze di rilascio nodale. Come noto, la ricerca di un valore di tensione all’apice non ha alcunsenso nel caso elastico; infatti, la tensione può essere valutata solo mediante fattori di campo. Nel caso elasto-plastico, incrudimento e softening di origine geometrica o legato al progressivo danneggiamento influisconodecisamente sull’andamento esponenziale del campo tensionale. È possibile comunque individuare un valore diriferimento, di entità finita, mediante estrapolazione delle tensioni elasto-plastiche nella zona di inizio softeningdella frattura. Tale grandezza può essere presa come fattore di riferimento per il calcolo delle forze di rilasciocoesive e quindi dell’energia dissipata.     Electrical studies and plasma characterization of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet operated at low frequency

    Low-temperature, high-pressure plasma jets have an extensive use in medical and biological applications. Much work has been devoted to study these applications while comparatively fewer studies appear to be directed to the discharge itself. In this work, in order to better understand the kind of electrical discharge and the plasma states existing in those devices, a study of the electrical characteristics of a typical plasma jet, operated at atmospheric pressure, using either air or argon, is reported. It is found that the experimentally determined electrical characteristics are consistent with the model of a thermal arc discharge, with a highly collisional cathode sheet. The only exception is the case of argon at the smallest electrode separation studied, around 1 mm in which case the discharge is better modeled as either a non-thermal arc or a high-pressure glow. Also, variations of the electrical behavior at different gas flow rates are interpreted, consistently with the arc model, in terms of the development of fluid turbulence in the external jet.Fil: Giuliani, Leandro Estanislao.     Fish passage system in an irrigation dam (Pilcomayo River basin): When engineering designs do not match ecohydraulic criteria.

    The Route 28 Dam has the potential to block fish movements from La Estrella marsh to the Pilcomayo River. In addition, themany fish that concentrate immediately downstream of the dam may suffer high mortality when they are stranded duringlow water periods. The goals of this study are to determine if fish are able to pass the spillway and to assess if the designof the installed ladders (pool and weir type) effectively supports upstream migration of Prochilodus lineatus (sábalo).Results showed that only fish longer than 39 cm should be able to ascend the spillway chute, but when water levels on thespillway crest are over 0.4 m. Fish are also unable to jump from spillway toe to spillway crest because the downstreamdissipation pool does not meet the minimum depth criterion for fish to accelerate to sufficient velocity. Fish ladders haveinsufficient number of pools and some pool dimensions and designs depart from accepted standard designs. Volumetricdissipation power in the upper pool of each fish ladder is too low for fish to rest. Also, attraction flows relative to totalspillway discharge at the entrance to each fishway are insufficient. Fish passage failures of both the spillway and pool andweir systems in La Estrella marsh can be traced to the ?salmon-centric? concept used by the designers. We conclude thatthe Route 28 Dam design including its fish passage systems, do not follow criteria to cope with the strong hydrologicalvariability and bioecological characteristics of fish inhabiting pulsatile systems such as La Estrella marsh.Fil: Baigún, Claudio Rafael M..     Optical properties of highly n-doped germanium obtained by in situ doping and laser annealing

    High n-type doping in germanium is essential for many electronic and optoelectronic applications especially for high performance Ohmic contacts, lasing and mid-infrared plasmonics. We report on the combination of in situ doping and excimer laser annealing to improve the activation of phosphorous in germanium. An activated n-doping concentration of 8.8  ×  1019 cm−3 has been achieved starting from an incorporated phosphorous concentration of 1.1  ×  1020 cm−3. Infrared reflectivity data fitted with a multi-layer Drude model indicate good uniformity over a 350 nm thick layer. Photoluminescence demonstrates clear bandgap narrowing and an increased ratio of direct to indirect bandgap emission confirming the high doping densities achieved

    Optimization of acoustic feature extraction from dysarthric speech

While unfamiliar listeners struggle to understand speakers with severe dysarthria, familiar listeners are often able to comprehend with high accuracy. This observation implies that although the speech produced by an individual with dysarthria may appear distorted and unintelligible to the untrained listener, there must be a set of consistent acoustic cues that the familiar communication partner is able to interpret. While dysarthric speech has been characterized both acoustically and perceptually, most accounts tend to compare dysarthric productions to those of healthy controls rather than identify the set of reliable and consistently controlled segmental cues. This work aimed to elucidate possible recognition strategies used by familiar listeners by optimizing a model of human speech recognition, Stevens' Lexical Access from Features (LAFF) framework, for ten individual speakers with dysarthria (SWDs). The LAFF model is rooted in distinctive feature theory, with acoustic landmarks indicating changes in the manner of articulation. The acoustic correlates manifested around landmarks provide the identity to articulator-free (manner) and articulator-bound (place) features.(cont.) SWDs created weaker consonantal landmarks, likely due to an inability to form complete closures in the vocal tract and to fully release consonantal constrictions. Identification of speaker-optimized acoustic correlate sets improved discrimination of each speaker's productions, evidenced by increased sensitivity and specificity. While there was overlap between the types of correlates identified for healthy and dysarthric speakers, using the optimal sets of correlates identified for SWDs adversely impaired discrimination of healthy speech. These results suggest that the combinations of correlates suggested for SWDs were specific to the individual and different from the segmental cues used by healthy individuals. Application of the LAFF model to dysarthric speech has potential clinical utility as a diagnostic tool, highlighting the fine-grain components of speech production that require intervention and quantifying the degree of impairment.by Thomas M.     COVID-19 and MIS-C treatment in children—results from an international survey

    Children have been mostly excluded from COVID-19 clinical trials, and, as a result, most medicines approved for COVID-19 have no pediatric indication. In addition, access to COVID-19 therapeutics remains limited. Collecting physicians’ experiences with off-label use of therapeutics is important to inform global prioritization processes and better target pediatric research and development. A standardized questionnaire was designed to explore the use of therapeutics used to treat COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) in pediatric patients globally. Seventy-three physicians from 29 countries participated. For COVID-19, steroids were used by 75.6% of respondents; remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies were prescribed by 48.6% and 27.1% of respondents, respectively. For MIS-C, steroids were prescribed by 79.1% of respondents and intravenous immunoglobulins by 69.6%. The use of these products depended on their pediatric approval and the limited availability of antivirals and most monoclonal antibodies in Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. Off-label prescription resulted widespread due to the paucity of clinical trials in young children at the time of the survey; though, based on our survey results, it was generally safe and led to clinical benefits. Conclusion: This survey provides a snapshot of current practice for treating pediatric COVID-19 worldwide, informing global prioritization efforts to better target pediatric research and development for COVID-19 therapeutics. Off-label use of such medicines is widespread for the paucity of clinical trials under 12 years and 40 kg, though appears to be safe and generally results in clinical benefits, even in young children. However, access to care, including medicine availability, differs widely globally. Clinical development of COVID-19 antivirals and monoclonal antibodies requires acceleration to ensure pediatric indication and allow worldwide availability of therapeutics that will enable more equitable access to COVID-19 treatment. What is Known: • Children have been mostly excluded from COVID-19 clinical trials, and, as a result, most medicines approved for COVID-19 have no pediatric indication. • Access to care differs widely globally, so because of the diversity of national healthcare systems; the unequal availability of medicines for COVID-19 treatment represents an obstacle to the pediatric population's universal right to health care. What is New: • Off-label COVID-19 drug prescription is widespread due to the lack of clinical trials in children younger than 12 years and weighing less than 40 kg, but relatively safe and generally leading to clinical benefit. • The application of the GAP-f framework to COVID-19 medicines is crucial, ensuring widespread access to all safe and effective drugs, enabling the rapid development of age-appropriate formulations, and developing specific access plans (including stability, storage, packaging, and labeling) for distribution in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Antivirals and monoclonal antibodies may benefit from the acceleration to reach widespread and equal diffusion

    Spectrum of early lung cancer presentation in low-dose screening CT : a pictorial review

    The typical presentation of early stage lung cancers on low-dose CT screening are non-calcified pulmonary nodules. However, there is a wide spectrum of unusual focal abnormalities that can be early presentations of lung cancer. These abnormalities include, for example, cancers associated with \u2018cystic airspaces\u2019 or scar-like cancers. The detection of lung cancer with low-dose CT can be affected by the absence of intravenous contrast medium. As a consequence, endobronchial and central lesions can be difficult to recognize, raising the potential for missed cancers. Focal lesions arising within pre-existing lung disease, such as lung fibrosis or apical scars, can also be early lung cancer manifestations and deserve particular consideration as recognition of these lesions may be hindered by the underlying disease. Furthermore, the unpredictable growth rate of lung cancer, which ranges from indolent to aggressive cancers, necessitates attention to the wide spectrum of progression in lung cancer appearance on serial low-dose CT scans. In this pictorial review we discuss the spectrum of early lung cancer presentation in low-dose CT screening, highlighting typical as well as unusual radiological features and the varied growth rates of early lung cancer.     Fish fauna from Río Pilcomayo National Park and Ramsar Site and its surroundings, Formosa, Argentina

    The first list of fish species from the Río Pilcomayo National Park and Ramsar Site (RPNP), located in the WetChaco plains of Northern Argentina is presented here. Samplings were carried out bimonthly from December 2006 to January 2008 in sites representative of the different landscapes, in both dry and wet seasons. A total of 77 species were collected, belonging to 23 families and eight orders and covering 54% of the province ichthyofauna.
