    Rapidly Connecting You to the World: Improving NASAs Worldview to Enhance Discovery and Access to Near Real-Time Imagery

    The world around us is constantly in motion. Storms swirl, fires rage, volcanoes erupt and icebergs calve. NASAs fleet of Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites are there to capture this. Within hours of satellite overpass, NASAs Worldview (https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov) delivers this global, near-real time imagery through an interactive web map application. Provided through NASAs Land Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) (https://earthdata.nasa.gov/lance) via NASAs Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) (https://earthdata.nasa.gov/gibs), the near real-time satellite imagery provides a launching point to discover where the latest wildfires, severe storms, volcanic eruptions, and calving ice shelves are happening. This poster will explore the newest near real-time satellite imagery and soon-to-be available imagery in Worldview, including imagery from geostationary satellites - GOES-East/West and Himawari-8. The poster will cover recent and future improvements to Worldview aimed to enhance the discovery and interaction with near real-time imagery and show how it is used by people from researchers, to meteorologists to the science-minded public around the world

    NASA GIBS and Worldview: Visualizing NASA's Earth Science Data for All to Explore

    For more than 20 years, the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) has operated dozens of remote sensing satellites collecting nearly 15 Petabytes of data that span thousands of science parameters. Within these observations are keys the Earth Scientists have used to unlock many discoveries that we now understand about our planet. Also contained within these observations are a myriad of opportunities for learning and education. The challenge is making them accessible to educators and students in intuitive and simple ways so that effort can be spent on lesson enrichment and not overcoming technical hurdles.The NASA Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) system and NASA Worldview interactive mapping site provide a unique view into EOS data through daily full resolution visualizations of hundreds of Earth science parameters. For many of these parameters, visualizations are available within hours of acquisition from the satellite. For others, visualizations are available for the entire mission of the satellite. Accompanying the visualizations are visual aids such as color legends, place names, and orbit tracks. By using these visualizations, educators and students can observe natural phenomena that enrich a scientific education.This presentation will provide an overview of the visualizations available in NASA GIBS and Worldview and how they are accessed. Specific attention will be given to the newer capabilities and accomplishments, including: Support for geostationary sub-daily visualizations, Enhanced support for vector-based visualizations, Improved Worldview tour and snapshot capabilities, New imagery products across a growing set of scientific areas

Near real-time imagery is made available in Worldview through the Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) via the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS). This poster will explore new near real-time imagery available in Worldview, the current ways in which the imagery is used in research, the news and social media and future improvements to Worldview that will enhance the availability and viewing of NASA EOS imagery

    Menstrual Justice: A Human Rights Vision for Australia

    In the past year alone, news reports have shown how menstrual injustice is linked to gender inequality, a lack of economic opportunity, poor health outcomes, and human rights violations. Here is a small sampling of the unjust treatment of women and other people who menstruate: locked bathrooms at schools, inadequate supply of free period products, harmful menstruation-avoidance options for athletes, the human and economic costs of the lack of menstruation and menopause employment leave policies, and the mistreatment of people imprisoned who menstruate. To improve women’s equality, we need menstrual justice. Menstrual justice is the achievement of dignity, liberty and equality for people who menstruate, primarily cis women and girls but also transgender men and boys, genderqueer/nonbinary and intersex persons. On the other hand, menstrual injustice is the oppression of people who menstruate simply because they menstruate, and our society does not yet accept and accommodate menstruation as normal. Menstrual injustices can compound the marginalization of persons already subject to other injustices, including young students, low-income persons, persons with disability, Indigenous persons, persons who are imprisoned, and remote and low-wage workers. We need laws that clearly outlaw workplace discrimination and harassment against menstruators, so no one is fired for bleeding on the job or being late to work due to period pain. We need public awareness campaigns and curricular expansion focused on health information and the eradication of menstrual stigma to curb poor menstrual health. We need access to resources and healthcare for residents in institutional settings that supports their autonomy over menstruation and menopause. We need provision of Indigenous intergenerational teaching about menstruation and menopause. Governments have addressed some of these menstrual injustices. For example, all States and Territories provide free product access in schools. Victoria will be providing free product access in public places. Such initiatives are critical and helpful. But they are isolated and do not tackle important pieces of the equality puzzle. The authors are a group of researchers, activists, and policy makers who have created this set of evidence-based recommendations for governments relating to menstruation and menopause. Our concrete recommendations, entitled “Menstrual Justice: A Human Rights Vision for Australia,” call upon Government to do more to fully address menstrual injustices. Our recommendations include the areas of public awareness, curriculum, schools, workplaces, public buildings and housing, institutional settings and discrimination and coercion. Many of these recommendations are no cost or low cost but could have a large impact on gender equality and would improve human rights for women and other people who menstruate

    When you first see Earth from space, you'll realize it's largely covered in white - our world is quite cloudy! Look closer and you'll discern landmasses, oceans, and regions covered in snow. Look closer still and you'll notice that our world is in constant motion - storms brewing and tracing paths over the oceans, plumes of smoke from wildfires and plumes of ash from volcanic eruptions billowing with the wind, dust storms blowing across the deserts, phytoplankton swirling in the oceans, icebergs floating in the oceans, and you'll see the human footprint on the earth's surface: cities connected by roads and vast swaths of agriculture. NASA's Worldview (https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov) interactive web map application provides a platform to view the world as it has been every day for the past 18 years, using data from NASA's fleet of Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites.This presentation will cover the history and development of the Worldview web map application; the 700+ imagery layers that are provided by the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) (https://earthdata.nasa.gov/gibs); current and new features that are in Worldview to constantly improve the user experience; the interdisciplinary nature of the app and how it helps a broad range of user communities discover and interact with NASA satellite imagery; and ongoing efforts to improve Worldview and serve user communities

    NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) leverages scientific and community best practices and standards to provide a scalable, compliant, and authoritative source for NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Earth science data visualizations. Since 2013, its goal has been to "transform how end users interact and discover [EOS] data through visualizations." Imagery layers within GIBS allow end users to easily and quickly interact with full resolution, pre-generated visualizations of scientific parameters. This interactive discovery approach relies on visual observation and identification of phenomena that are not as simply identified otherwise

    The Next Generation of NASA Rapid Response: Worldview Snapshots

    The NASA Rapid Response system started in 2001 by serving static subsets of Near Real Time MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) imagery acquired from the Terra satellite. Over this time, Rapid Response has been used to support near real time applications such as wildfire and sea ice mapping for hundreds of thousands of users. In 2011, the toolset expanded to include GIBS, the Global Imagery Browse Services, which provides a web map tiling service of over 700 imagery products, and Worldview (https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/), an interactive web application that showcases the products available in GIBS. This year a new application, Worldview Snapshots, has been added to complete the toolset by providing a flexible, low bandwidth method to download personalized subsets for those who do not need or cannot use a fully featured web mapping application.     Menstrual health and hygiene among Indigenous Australian girls and women: barriers and opportunities

    Health inequities inhibit global development and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. One gendered health area, Menstrual Health & Hygiene (MHH), has received increasing attention in Low- and Middle-Income Countries as a barrier to health, wellbeing, and gender equity. Recent anecdotal evidence in Australia highlights that MHH also present challenges to High Income Countries, particularly among underrepresented populations, such as Indigenous Australian peoples, people from low socio-economic backgrounds, or communities that are remotely located. In this article, we chart the emergence of attention to MHH in the Australian context and highlight key considerations for the conduct of research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples within the culturally- and gender-sensitive area of MHH. Further we draw on insights offered by a partnership between female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, NGO stakeholders, and non-Indigenous researchers. Through a convening (yarning circle) held in March 2018, the group identified multiple socioecological considerations for MHH research and practice, including: affordability and access to menstrual products, barriers to knowledge and culturally sensitive education, infrastructure and supply chain challenges, and the necessity of Indigenous-led research and community-driven data collection methods in addressing the sensitive topic. We draw together these insights to develop recommendations for future research, advocacy, and action in Australia
