    The translation, dissemination, and criticism of Leo Tolstoy's works by Shanghai intellectuals in the early 20th century are discussed. The author restores the unique social and historical context in China in the first two decades of the 20th century, combs Tolstoy's works published in Shanghai and critical articles about the writer published by various newspapers and periodicals, revealing the psychological dynamics and reality of these translators and critics, and summarizes Shanghai's outstanding contributions to the dissemination of Tolstoy and the promotion of Tolstoy's research in China

    Influence of Cloud/Fog on Atmospheric VOCs in the Free Troposphere: A Case Study at Mount Tai in Eastern China

    International audienceField measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were conducted in July of 2015 at Mount Tai, where 63 species of VOCs were measured using GC-MS. In this study, air samples were collected in two different weather conditions: cloud/fog and non-cloud/fog respectively and influences of the cloud/fog on VOCs species were analyzed. The sources of air masses were calculated by back trajectories with HYSPLIT model. Five main kinds of VOCs were analyzed and oxy-VOCs (OVOCs) had the largest contribution (67% on the cloudy/foggy days and 72% on the non-cloudy/foggy days) to total measured VOCs among all of the samples collected at Mount Tai. Acetone was the most abundant compound (18 ppb on the cloudy/foggy days and 15 ppb on the non-cloudy/foggy days) among the VOCs. The concentrations of VOCs collected in cloudy/foggy days were higher than those measured in non-cloudy/foggy days and indicated that cloudy/foggy days favoured the accumulation of atmospheric VOCs. However, the concentrations of most OVOCs in non-cloud/fog conditions were higher than those in cloud/fog conditions. Atmospheric photochemical reactions may partly account for this result. Air mass trajectory analysis shows that most air masses from heavily polluted areas results in the increase of atmospheric VOCs. OVOCs and aromatics provided the main contribution to ozone formation potential. Besides cloud and fog, VOC concentration is concerned with integrated factors including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction

    Modelling the effect of land use change on hydrological model parameters via linearized calibration method in the upstream of Huaihe River Basin, China

    Conceptual rainfall–runoff models have become a basic tool for evaluating effects of land use/cover changes on the hydrologic processes in small-scale as well as large watersheds. The runoff-producing mechanism is influenced by land use/cover changes. In this study, we analysed the effect of land use change on hydrological model parameters by calibrating the model parameters of different time periods with different land use via a linearized calibration method. The parameter calibration of a conceptual model usually involves the construction of objective function and optimization methods for good performance of observed data. However, the objective function of the minimum-sum-squared error will introduce an unrelated optimum solution for the parameter calibration problem of a conceptual model, which belongs to a highly complex nonlinear system. Thus, a linearized parameter calibration method, which searches for the optimal value on a parameter surface, is presented, based on the analysis of the problems of the objective function of the minimum-sum-squared error. Firstly, an ideal model is shown that illustrates the efficiency and applicability of this method. Secondly, the novel method is demonstrated for solving the Xinanjiang daily model parameter calibration. Finally, 50 years of data are divided into 4 different periods for parameter comparison, through which the effects of land use/cover changes on runoff in Dapoling watershed are evaluated. The results show that the linearized parameter calibration method is convergent, reasonable and effective. For example, the model parameter of evapotranspiration coefficient KC varied considerably, from 0.658 to 0.922, in response to land use/cover change within the watershed.Keywords: land use/cover change; parameter calibration; linearized; upper Huaihe River Basi

    A Novel Floating High-Voltage Level Shifter with Pre-Storage Technique

    This paper proposes a novel floating high-voltage level shifter (FHV-LS) with the pre-storage technique for high speed and low deviation in propagation delay. With this technology, the transmission paths from input to output are optimized, and thus the propagation delay of the proposed FHV-LS is reduced to as low as the sub-nanosecond scale. To further reduce the propagation delay, a pull-up network with regulated strength is introduced to reduce the fall time, which is a crucial part of the propagation delay. In addition, a pseudosymmetrical input pair is used to improve the symmetry of FHV-LS structurally to balance between the rising and falling propagation delays. Moreover, a start-up circuit is developed to initialize the output state of FHV-LS during the VDDH power up. The proposed FHV-LS is implemented using 0.3-µm HVCMOS technology. Post-layout simulation shows that the propagation delays and energy per transition of the proposed FHV-LS are 384 ps and 77.7 pJ @VH = 5 V, respectively. Finally, the 500-points Monte Carlo are performed to verify the performance and the stability

    Development of village doctors in China: financial compensation and health system support.

    BACKGROUND: Since 1968, China has trained about 1.5 million barefoot doctors in a few years' time to provide basic health services to 0.8 billion rural population. China's Ministry of Health stopped using the term of barefoot doctor in 1985, and changed policy to develop village doctors. Since then, village doctors have kept on playing an irreplaceable role in China's rural health, even though the number of village doctors has fluctuated over the years and they face serious challenges. United Nations declared Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. Under this context, development of Community Health workers (CHWs) has become an emerging policy priority in many resource-poor developing countries. China's experiences and lessons learnt in developing and maintaining village doctors may be useful for these developing countries. METHODS: This paper aims to synthesis lessons learnt from the Chinese CHW experiences. It summarizes China's experiences in exploring and using strategic partnership between the community and the formal health system to develop CHWs in the two stages, the barefoot doctor stage (1968 -1985) and the village doctor stage (1985-now). Chinese and English literature were searched from PubMed, CNKI and Wanfang. The information extracted from the selected articles were synthesized according to the four partnership strategies for communities and health system to support CHW development, namely 1) joint ownership and design of CHW programmes; 2) collaborative supervision and constructive feedback; 3) a balanced package of incentives, both financial and non-financial; and 4) a practical monitoring system incorporating data from the health system and community. RESULTS: The study found that the townships and villages provided an institutional basis for barefoot doctor policy, while the formal health system, including urban hospitals, county health schools, township health centers, and mobile medical teams provided training to the barefoot doctors. But After 1985, the formal health system played a more dominant role in the CHW system including both selection and training of village doctors. China applied various mechanisms to compensate village doctors in different stages. During 1960s and 1970s, the main income source of barefoot doctors was from their villages' collective economy. After 1985 when the rural collective economy collapsed and barefoot doctors were transformed to village doctors, they depended on user fees, especially from drug sale revenues. In the new century, especially after the new round of health system reform in 2009, government subsidy has become an increasing source of village doctors' income. CONCLUSION: The barefoot doctor policy has played a significant role in providing basic human resources for health and basic health services to rural populations when rural area had great shortages of health resources. The key experiences for this great achievement are the intersection between the community and the formal health system, and sustained and stable financial compensation to the community health workers

    Advances in understanding of health-promoting benefits of medicine and food homology using analysis of gut microbiota and metabolomics

    The health-promoting benefits of medicine and food homology (MFH) are known for thousands of years in China. However, active compounds and biological mechanisms are unclear, greatly limiting clinical practice of MFH. The advent of gut microbiota analysis and metabolomics emerge as key tools to discover functional compounds, therapeutic targets, and mechanisms of benefits of MFH. Such studies hold great promise to promote and optimize functional efficacy and development of MFH-based products, for example, foods for daily dietary supplements or for special medical purposes. In this review, we summarized pharmacological effects of 109 species of MFH approved by the Health and Fitness Commission in 2015. Recent studies applying genome sequencing of gut microbiota and metabolomics to explain the activity of MFH in prevention and management of health consequences were extensively reviewed. We discussed the potentiality in future to decipher functional activities of MFH by applying metabolomics-based polypharmacokinetic strategy and multiomics technologies. The needs for personalized MFH recommendations and comprehensive databases have also been highlighted. This review emphasizes current achievements and challenges of the analysis of gut microbiota and metabolomics as a new avenue to understand MFH
