    Public Debt, High Inflation and Economic Depression: A Survival Analysis Approach

    This dissertation investigates the association between public debt, high inflation and economics depression by using the survival analysis approach. In the first chapter, I use non-parametric survival analysis to check the association between high debt episodes and high inflation episodes. Both the Kaplan-Meier estimate and the Nelson-Aelon analysis indicate that the existence of an overlapping high inflation episode is correlated with longer duration of high debt episodes. The reverse is also true: the existence of a high debt episode overlap is associated with longer duration of high inflation episodes. Whether or not the country is a member of the OECD does not matter for the survival experience. In the second chapter, I use the Cox PH model, the exponential model and the Weibull model to analyze the survival experience of high debt episodes and high inflation episodes. I first consider the duration of high debt episodes (HDEs). Across all specifications, HDE duration depends on two variables: (1) the existence of an overlap with a high inflation episode; (2) the growth rate of GDP. These effects are not independent. At high GDP growth, an HIF overlap is associated with a shorter HDE. At low GDP growth, however, an HIF overlap is associated with a longer HDE. I also examine the duration of HIFs, using HDE overlap and GDP growth as regressors. Interestingly, the results are mixed and there is no evidence of interaction between HDE overlap and GDP growth. Debt of the public sector has been associated with low, or even negative, growth. This position is most closely associated with Reinhart and Rogoff (2010). In the third chapter, we analyze the duration of economic crises, in the form of depressions, to see if there is an association with consecutive years of high public-debt-to-GDP ratios. We find that high debt is positively correlated with the duration of depressions while inflation is negatively correlated with such duration. The last chapter uses parametric survival analysis to analyze the duration of eco- nomic crises to see if they have an association with the occurrence of consecutive years of high public-debt-to-GDP ratios. By comparing the results from five para- metric models, including the exponential, the Weibull, the log-normal, the log-logistic, and the generalized gamma regression, all of which have the accelerated failure time (AFT) metric, I find that there is a positive association between high debt episodes and the length of economic crises. All of the results are consistent with each other throughout the models. The main results were not refuted by adding covariates including economic factors, political factors, cultural factors and financial crises as controls

    Effects of Medium- and Long-Chain Structured Triacylglycerol on the Therapeutic Efficacy of Vitamin D on Ulcerative Colitis:A Consideration for Efficient Lipid Delivery Systems

    Due to intestinal malabsorption and poor water solubility, vitamin D (VitD) deficiency in ulcerative colitis (UC) continues to increase. Medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCT), as novel lipids, have been widely applied in the field of functional food and medicine nutrition. Our previous studies showed that the difference in MLCT structure could affect VitD bioaccessibility in vitro. In this study, our results further indicate that, although identical in fatty acid composition, structured triacylglycerol (STG) had a higher VitD bioavailability (AUC = 15470.81 μg/L × h) and metabolism efficacy [s-25(OH)D, p &lt; 0.05] than physical mixtures of triacylglycerol (PM), which further affect the amelioration efficiency in UC mice. Compared with PM, the damage of colonic tissues, intestinal barrier proteins, and inflammatory cytokines in STG showed better amelioration at the same dose of VitD. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of nutrients in different carriers and a solution for developing nutrients with high absorption efficiency.</p

    Circular RNA expression profiles in the porcine liver of two distinct phenotype pig breeds

    Objective An experiment was conducted to identify and characterize the circular RNA expression and metabolic characteristics in the liver of Jinhua pigs and Landrace pigs. Methods Three Jinhua pigs and three Landrace pigs respectively at 70-day were slaughtered to collect the liver tissue samples. Immediately after slaughter, blood samples were taken to detect serum biochemical indicators. Total RNA extracted from liver tissue samples were used to prepare the library and then sequence on HiSeq 2500. Bioinformatic methods were employed to analyze sequence data to identify the circRNAs and predict the potential roles of differentially expressed circRNAs between the two breeds. Results Significant differences in physiological and biochemical traits were observed between growing Jinhua and Landrace pigs. We identified 84,864 circRNA candidates in two breeds and 366 circRNAs were detected as significantly differentially expressed. Their host genes are involved in lipid biosynthetic and metabolic processes according to the gene ontology analysis and associated with metabolic pathways. Conclusion Our research represents the first description of circRNA profiles in the porcine liver from two divergent phenotype pigs. The predicted miRNA-circRNA interaction provides important basis for miRNA-circRNA relationships in the porcine liver. These data expand the repertories of porcine circRNA and are conducive to understanding the possible molecular mechanisms involved in miRNA and circRNA.     A Long-Lived Accretionary Process during the Amalgamation of the North China Craton: Insights from Neoarchean–Paleoproterozoic Polyphase Magmatism in the Lüliang Complex

    There has been a long debate regarding the timing of the final amalgamation of the North China Craton, which is considered to have occurred either during the Neoarchean or Paleoproterozoic era. One major point of contention is whether there existed a long-lived subduction lasting through the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic. The Lüliang Complex contains multiphases of magmatism and thus represents the most viable region to address this controversy. In this study, we carried geochronological and geochemical analysis on the representative granitoids. Secondary ion mass spectrometry U–Pb dating revealed four distinct granitoid groups emplaced at 2531 ± 4, 2189–2173, 2027 ± 25, and 1852 ± 41 Ma, respectively. Notably, the 2531 Ma granitic gneiss was identified for the first time in this region. Based on the geochemical characteristics, the granitoids can be divided into two types. The 2531 and 2027 Ma groups display I-type features, while the 2189–2173 and 1852 Ma groups exhibit A-type geochemical affinities. Both I-type groups exhibit enrichment in Rb, depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti, moderate fractionated REE patterns, substantial negative Eu anomalies, low Sr/Y ratios, and positive εHf(t) (+3.51 to +5.53 and +5.59 to +7.32, respectively), indicating that they were generated from partial melting of the juvenile mafic crust. In contrast, the 2189–2173 Ma granitoids belong to A2-type and were most likely generated by the partial melting of felsic rocks in the back-arc region, while the 1852 Ma granitoids belong to A1-type and were most possibly the result of partial melting of mafic-intermediate rocks during the post-collisional stage. Based on the records of A-type granitic magmatism and the ~1950 Ma peak metamorphism throughout the Trans-North China Orogen, we propose that a long-lived subduction process (2531–1950 Ma) can mostly explain the existing geological phenomena. It is likely that the subduction between the Eastern and Western Blocks should have commenced at ~2531 Ma, followed by a long-lived subduction. The two blocks ultimately collided with each other to form the North China Craton at ~1950 Ma, which triggered post-collisional exhumation and partial melting at ~1852 Ma

    3D bioprinted hydrogel/polymer scaffold with factor delivery and mechanical support for growth plate injury repair

    Introduction: Growth plate injury is a significant challenge in clinical practice, as it could severely affect the limb development of children, leading to limb deformity. Tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting technology have great potential in the repair and regeneration of injured growth plate, but there are still challenges associated with achieving successful repair outcomes.Methods: In this study, GelMA hydrogel containing PLGA microspheres loaded with chondrogenic factor PTH(1–34) was combined with BMSCs and Polycaprolactone (PCL) to develop the PTH(1–34)@PLGA/BMSCs/GelMA-PCL scaffold using bio-3D printing technology.Results: The scaffold exhibited a three-dimensional interconnected porous network structure, good mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and was suitable for cellchondrogenic differentiation. And a rabbit model of growth plate injury was appliedto validate the effect of scaffold on the repair of injured growth plate. The resultsshowed that the scaffold was more effective than injectable hydrogel in promotingcartilage regeneration and reducing bone bridge formation. Moreover, the addition ofPCL to the scaffold provided good mechanical support, significantly reducing limbdeformities after growth plate injury compared with directly injected hydrogel.Discussion: Accordingly, our study demonstrates the feasibility of using 3D printed scaffolds for treating growth plate injuries and could offer a new strategy for the development of growth plate tissue engineering therapy

    Actively implementing an evidence-based feeding guideline for critically ill patients (NEED): a multicenter, cluster-randomized, controlled trial

    Background: Previous cluster-randomized controlled trials evaluating the impact of implementing evidence-based guidelines for nutrition therapy in critical illness do not consistently demonstrate patient benefits. A large-scale, sufficiently powered study is therefore warranted to ascertain the effects of guideline implementation on patient-centered outcomes. Methods: We conducted a multicenter, cluster-randomized, parallel-controlled trial in intensive care units (ICUs) across China. We developed an evidence-based feeding guideline. ICUs randomly allocated to the guideline group formed a local "intervention team", which actively implemented the guideline using standardized educational materials, a graphical feeding protocol, and live online education outreach meetings conducted by members of the study management committee. ICUs assigned to the control group remained unaware of the guideline content. All ICUs enrolled patients who were expected to stay in the ICU longer than seven days. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality within 28 days of enrollment. Results: Forty-eight ICUs were randomized to the guideline group and 49 to the control group. From March 2018 to July 2019, the guideline ICUs enrolled 1399 patients, and the control ICUs enrolled 1373 patients. Implementation of the guideline resulted in significantly earlier EN initiation (1.20 vs. 1.55 mean days to initiation of EN; difference − 0.40 [95% CI − 0.71 to − 0.09]; P = 0.01) and delayed PN initiation (1.29 vs. 0.80 mean days to start of PN; difference 1.06 [95% CI 0.44 to 1.67]; P = 0.001). There was no significant difference in 28-day mortality (14.2% vs. 15.2%; difference − 1.6% [95% CI − 4.3% to 1.2%]; P = 0.42) between groups. Conclusions: In this large-scale, multicenter trial, active implementation of an evidence-based feeding guideline reduced the time to commencement of EN and overall PN use but did not translate to a reduction in mortality from critical illness.
