    AI Enhanced Control Engineering Methods

AI and machine learning based approaches are becoming ubiquitous in almost all engineering fields. Control engineering cannot escape this trend. In this paper, we explore how AI tools can be useful in control applications. The core tool we focus on is automatic differentiation. Two immediate applications are linearization of system dynamics for local stability analysis or for state estimation using Kalman filters. We also explore other usages such as conversion of differential algebraic equations to ordinary differential equations for control design. In addition, we explore the use of machine learning models for global parameterizations of state vectors and control inputs in model predictive control applications. For each considered use case, we give examples and results

Rational-operator-based depth-from-defocus approach to scene reconstruction

This paper presents a rational-operator-based approach to depth from defocus (DfD) for the reconstruction of three-dimensional scenes from two-dimensional images, which enables fast DfD computation that is independent of scene textures. Two variants of the approach, one using the Gaussian rational operators (ROs) that are based on the Gaussian point spread function (PSF) and the second based on the generalized Gaussian PSF, are considered. A novel DfD correction method is also presented to further improve the performance of the approach. Experimental results are considered for real scenes and show that both approaches outperform existing RO-based methods

Identification of prognostic and susceptibility markers in chronic myeloid leukemia using next generation sequencing

Background: Incidence of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is continuously increasing and expected to reach 100,000 patients every year by 2030. Though the discovery of Imatinib Mesylate (IM) has brought a paradigm shift in CML treatment, 20% patients show resistance to this tyrosine kinase inhibiter (TKI). Therefore, it is important to identify markers, which can predict the occurrence and prognosis of CML. Clinical Exome Sequencing, panel of more than 4800 genes, was performed in CML patients to identify prognostic and susceptibility markers in CML.Methods: Enrolled CML patients (n=18) were segregated as IM responders (n=10) and IM failures (n=8) as per European Leukemia Net (ELN), 2013 guidelines. Healthy controls (n=5) were also enrolled. DNA from blood of subjects was subjected to Next Generation Sequencing. Rare mutations present in one patient group and absent in another group were considered as prognostic markers, whereas mutations present in more than 50% patients were considered as susceptibility markers.Result: Mutations in genes associated with cancer related functions were found in different patient groups. Four variants: rs116201358, rs4014596, rs52897880 and rs2274329 in C8A, UNC93B1, APOH and CA6 genes, respectively, were present in IM responders; whereas rs4945 in MFGE8 was present in IM failures. Mutations in HLA-DRB1 (rs17878951), HLA-DRB5 (rs137863146), RPHN2 (rs193179333), CYP2F1 (rs116958555), KCNJ12 (rs76684759) and FUT3 (rs151218854) were present as susceptibility markers. Conclusion: The potential genetic markers discovered in this study can help in predicting response to IM as frontline therapy. Susceptibility markers may also be used as panel for individuals prone to have CML.Keywords: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Genetic Markers, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS

Characterizing Streaks in Printed Images: A Matching Pursuit Method using Wavelet Decomposition

    No full text
ABSTRACT Printed pages from industrial printers can exhibit a number of defects. One of the common defects and a key driver of maintenance costs is the line streak. This paper describes an efficient streak characterization method for automatically interpreting scanned images using the matching pursuit algorithm. This method progressively finds dominant streaks in signal profiles. It uses wavelet decomposition to speed up the element selection process and reduce computation complexity. Previous approaches require the design engineer to pre-specify the characteristics for each possible streak that could be detected -an approach which is practically limited to detecting a few streak types in specific locations. The Matching Pursuit algorithm, inc contrast, fully characterizes any and all streaks found on the scanned page permitting a generic analysis of a broad range of defects found in the field

Background: One health approach for rabies prevention in humans can be done only by targeting the animal source of the virus. Animal bite is the most common mode of transmission of virus to human being. Objective: to describe the epidemiology of animal bite among those attending the animal bite clinic of a tertiary care center of district Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Methods: This hospital based descriptive study was carried out from March 2015 through February 2016 at Animal Bite Clinic of Department of Community Medicine, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Govt. Medical College, Tanda, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. A preformed and pre tested closed ended questionnaire was used. World Health Organizationā€™s category of animal bite was used to categorize the patients. Results: Males outnumbered females and around 30% were below 20 years of age followed by third decade. Majority of victims were students (31%) and in 61.1% the wound was localized in the lower extremities. Dogs bite was reported in 86% cases. Stray animal bite resulted in 94.2% of category III bites. More than half of the victims were aware of local remedy to be done after bite and practiced it within 30 minutes of bite. Conclusions: Agent, host and environmental factor of animal bite studied in this study indicate that vaccination of animal, abolishing environment favorable for stray animals and awareness of early management of animal bite cases can lead to goal of elimination of rabies
