    Mechanical and thermal properties of graphene sulfonate nanosheet reinforced sacrificial concrete at elevated temperatures

    Progress in the field of nanomaterials presents an opportunity to improve the performance of cementitious composites via graphene or its derivatives. This paper presents an experimental study on mechanical and thermal properties of sacrificial concrete without and with graphene sulfonate nanosheets (GSNSs) during high temperature exposure. The microstructure, porosity, mechanical strengths, thermal analysis, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity and ablation behaviour of sacrificial concrete during exposure to various temperatures up to 1000 °C were comprehensively investigated. Two new experimental apparatuses were developed and used to measure mechanical strengths of sacrificial concrete at elevated temperatures. It was found that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, thermal diffusivity and decomposition enthalpy of sacrificial concrete were increased by 12.98–25.36%, 8.66–34.38%, 25.00–103.23% and 4.23% respectively when adding 0.1 wt% GSNSs, while the porosity and ablation velocity of sacrificial concrete were reduced by 3.01–6.99% and 4.14% respectively due to the incorporation of GSNSs

    Three-dimensional virtual microstructure generation of porous polycrystalline ceramics

    Various numerical methods have been recently employed to model microstructure of ceramics with different level of accuracy. The simplicity of the models based on regular morphologies results in a low computational cost, but these methods produce less realistic geometries with lower precision. Additional methods are able to reconstruct irregular structures by simulating the grain-growth kinetics but are restricted due to their high computational cost and complexity. In this paper, an innovative approach is proposed to replicate a three-dimensional (3D) complex microstructure with a low computational cost and the realistic features for porous polycrystalline ceramics. We present a package, written in MATLAB, that develops upon the basic Voronoi tessellation method for representing realistic microstructures to describe the evolution during the solid-state sintering process. The method is based on a cohesive prism that links the interconnect cells and thus simulates the neck formation. Spline surfaces are employed to represent more realistic features. The method efficiently controls shape and size and is able to reconstruct a wide range of microstructures composed of grains, grain boundaries, interconnected (open) and isolated (closed) pores. The numerical input values can be extracted from 2D imaging of real polished surfaces and through theoretical analysis. The capability of the method to replicate different structural properties is tested using some examples with various configurations

    Serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Levels Correlate with Severity of Retinopathy in Diabetic Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Background. Investigations regarding serum and plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) are conflicting. This meta-analysis is aimed at determining whether serum and plasma VEGF levels are associated with DR and its severity in diabetic patients. Methods. PubMed and EMBASE were used to search for published studies, and serum and plasma VEGF levels were compared among DR, nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and nondiabetic retinopathy (NDR) patients. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled using a random effects model. Results. A total of 29 studies comprising 1805 DR (or NPDR or PDR) patients and 1699 NDR patients were included. ELISA was used to evaluate serum or plasma VEGF levels in all except for two studies included in this meta-analysis. Overall, serum VEGF levels were significantly higher in DR patients (SMD: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.44-1.03) than those in NDR patients, while plasma VEGF levels were not in the comparison (SMD: 0.40, 95% CI: −0.13-0.92). Similarly, NPDR (SMD: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.22-0.80) and PDR (SMD: 1.32, 95% CI: 0.79-1.85) patients had higher serum VEGF levels compared with NDR patients, but the difference was not significant in plasma samples (SMD: 0.24, 95% CI: −0.47-0.95; SMD: 0.37, 95% CI: −0.30-1.05). In addition, serum VEGF levels were higher in PDR patients than those in NPDR patients (SMD: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.41-1.33), but plasma VEGF levels were not (SMD: −0.00, 95% CI: −0.31-0.31). The subgroup and metaregression analysis revealed that the study location, study design, and publication year of a study have certain influence on heterogeneity between studies in serum or plasma samples. Conclusions. VEGF levels in the serum instead of those in the plasma correlate to the presence and severity of DR in diabetic patients. Further large-scale studies are required to confirm these findings

    Cyclin B3 Deficiency Impairs Germline Stem Cell Maintenance and Its Overexpression Delays Cystoblast Differentiation in Drosophila Ovary

    It is well known that cyclin B3 (cycB3) plays a key role in the control of cell cycle progression. However, whether cycB3 is involved in stem cell fate determination remains unknown. The Drosophila ovary provides an exclusive model for studying the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that modulate the fate of germline stem cells (GSCs). Here, using this model, we show that Drosophila cycB3 plays a new role in controlling the fate of germline stem cells (GSC). Results from cycB3 genetic analyses demonstrate that cycB3 is intrinsically required for GSC maintenance. Results from green fluorescent protein (GFP)-transgene reporter assays show that cycB3 is not involved in Dad-mediated regulation of Bmp signaling, or required for dpp-induced bam transcriptional silencing. Double mutants of bam and cycB3 phenocopied bam single mutants, suggesting that cycB3 functions in a bam-dependent manner in GSCs. Deficiency of cycB3 fails to cause apoptosis in GSCs or influence cystoblast (CB) differentiation into oocytes. Furthermore, overexpression of cycB3 dramatically increases the CB number in Drosophila ovaries, suggesting that an excess of cycB3 function delays CB differentiation. Given that the cycB3 gene is evolutionarily conserved, from insects to humans, cycB3 may also be involved in controlling the fate of GSCs in humans

    Mean Platelet Volume and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Aim. To evaluate the association between mean platelet volume (MPV) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library up to 4 September 2017. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effect model. Results. Nineteen studies comprising 1361 GDM patients and 1911 normal pregnant women were included. MPV was increased in GDM patients when compared with healthy pregnant women (SMD: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.43–1.16; P<0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that such trend was consistent in the third-trimester (SMD: 1.35; 95% CI: 0.72–1.98), Turkish (SMD: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.43–1.19), and Italian (SMD: 2.78; 95% CI: 2.22–3.34) patients with GDM and the patients diagnosed based on Carpenter and Coustan criteria (SMD: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.42–1.65). Significantly higher MPV also were observed within cross-sectional studies (SMD: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.49–1.49). Remarkable between-study heterogeneity and potential publication bias were observed in this meta-analysis; however, sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were not unduly influenced by any single study. Conclusions. GDM patients are accompanied by increased MPV, strengthening the clinical evidence that MPV may be a predictive marker for GDM

    Circulating retinol binding protein 4 levels in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is implicated in obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus that are closely associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, recent investigations regarding circulating RBP4 levels in NAFLD are conflicting. This meta-analysis is to determine whether NAFLD, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and simple steatosis (SS) patients have altered RBP4 levels. Methods We performed a systematic search in PubMed, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library up until 18 March 2017, and 12 studies comprising a total of 4247 participants (2271 NAFLD patients and 1976 controls) were included in the meta-analysis. Results There were no significant differences of circulating RBP4 levels in the following comparisons: (1) NAFLD patients vs controls (standardized mean differences [SMD]: 0.08; 95% CI: −0.21, 0.38); (2) NASH patients vs controls (SMD: −0.49; 95% CI: −1.09, 0.12); (3) SS patients vs controls (SMD: −0.72; 95% CI: −1.64, 0.20) and (4) NASH vs SS patients (SMD: −0.04; 95% CI: −0.32, 0.24). The results remained essentially unchanged in the comparisons between NAFLD patients and controls after excluding single individual study or bariatric studies (n = 2). No significant publication bias was detected. However, there was significant heterogeneity among studies and the subgroup and meta-regression analyses did not find the potential sources. Conclusions Circulating RBP4 levels may not be associated with NAFLD. Further prospective cohort studies are required to confirm these findings

    Circulating chemerin levels and gestational diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Chemerin is a novel adipokine which is associated with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, recent investigations regarding circulating chemerin levels in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are conflicting. This meta-analysis is to evaluate and determine their associations. Methods A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science up to 13 December 2017. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effect model. Results Eleven studies comprising 742 GDM patients and 840 normal pregnant women were included. Circulating chemerin levels were increased in GDM patients compared with healthy pregnant women (SMD: 1.16; 95% CI: 0.29, 2.04; P = 0.009). Subgroup analyses revealed such difference was especially available in the groups of the second trimester (SMD: 1.47; 95% CI: 0.28, 2.67) and mean age < 30 years (SMD: 2.30; 95% CI: 0.69, 3.91) of GDM patients. There was significant heterogeneity among studies (I 2 = 98.0%, P < 0.001); however, heterogeneity disappeared or markedly decreased in the subgroups of European populations (I 2 = 0.0%, P = 0.531), age ≥ 30 years (I 2 = 28.2%, P = 0.223) and WHO diagnostic criteria (I 2 = 0.0%, P = 0.490) when stratifying by study location, trimester of chemerin measurement and the diagnostic criteria of GDM. Conclusions The elevated levels of circulating chemerin were associated with GDM, which suggests it might play an important role in the pathogenetic mechanism of GDM

    Platelet indices in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Correlation between platelet indices and chronic inflammatory arthritis (CIA) remains a moot point today. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether platelet (PLT) count, mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to August 2019. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effect model. As a result, 34 studies were included, encompassing 17 on RA, 12 on AS, 3 on PsA and 2 on both RA and AS. In these studies, PLT count was significantly higher in RA (SMD = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.36–0.73, P .05), and similar results were observed in subgroup analyses. The meta-regression analysis demonstrated that there were strong positive correlations between erythrocyte sedimentation rate and PLT count, and weak correlation trend between the disease activity score and PLT count in both RA and AS subjects without statistically significant difference. The sensitivity analysis indicated that these results were not unduly influenced by any single study. In conclusion, this meta-analysis demonstrated that PLT count was elevated in CIA patients and could be suitable for evaluating the disease activity, whereas MPV and PDW were independent of CIA

    Fracture Mechanical Behavior of Cracked Cantilever Roof with Large Cutting Height Mining

    Accurately predicting the roof collapse span is crucial in ensuring the safe production of thick seam mining with large mining height, which is easy in forming a “cantilever beam” structure. Considering roof damage caused by roadway excavation and coal seam mining disturbance, the fracture mechanics model of large mining height roof cantilever beam with nonpenetrating cracks was established. The roof was divided into two parts: the crack-affected area and the crack-unaffected area. The analytical expression of the boundary between the two areas was established by fracture mechanics methods. Based on the boundary equation, the influences of crack size, crack inclination, roof lithology, and roof thickness on the roof crack-affected area were analyzed in detail. Finally, the accuracy of the theoretical model was verified by numerical experiments using the extended finite element method. The results demonstrate that the size of the area affected by the vertical crack increases with the increase of the crack size and the thickness of the roof. The influence of the crack decreases with the increase of roof lithology. The probability of early periodic collapse of a thin roof with the crack is increased. When the crack is completely located in the interior of the roof, the crack-affected area shrinks greatly with the decrease of the crack inclination. When the crack inclination is small, the crack will not cause the early collapse of the roof. Overall, the conclusions obtained are of great significance for predicting the collapse span of a cantilever roof with initial damage in large mining height
