    Bibliometric and visual analysis of RAN methylation in cardiovascular disease

    BackgroundRNA methylation is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) occurrence and development. The purpose of this study is to visually analyze the results and research trends of global RNA methylation in CVD.MethodsArticles and reviews on RNA methylation in CVD published before 6 November 2022 were searched in the Web of Science Core Collection. Visual and statistical analysis was performed using CiteSpace 1.6.R4 advanced and VOSviewer 1.6.18.ResultsThere were 847 papers from 1,188 institutions and 63 countries/regions. Over approximately 30 years, there was a gradual increase in publications and citations on RNA methylation in CVD. America and China had the highest output (284 and 259 papers, respectively). Nine of the top 20 institutions that published articles were from China, among which Fudan University represented the most. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences was the journal with the most studies. Nature was the most co-cited journal. The most influential writers were Zhang and Wang from China and Mathiyalagan from the United States. After 2015, the primary keywords were cardiac development, heart, promoter methylation, RNA methylation, and N6-methyladenosine. Nuclear RNA, m6A methylation, inhibition, and myocardial infarction were the most common burst keywords from 2020 to the present.ConclusionsA bibliometric analysis reveals research hotspots and trends of RNA methylation in CVD. The regulatory mechanisms of RNA methylation related to CVD and the clinical application of their results, especially m6A methylation, are likely to be the focus of future research

    Gender differences in geriatric depressive symptoms in urban China: the role of ADL and sensory and communication abilities

    ObjectivesADL and Sensory and Communication Abilities are important indicators of the quality of life of the elderly which are significant determinants of health, particularly in developing countries. The present cross-sectional study investigated effect of ADL and Sensory and Communication Abilities on depressive symptoms, as well as the the role of gender in these effects.DesignThis is a cross-sectional study.SettingA nationally representative cross-sectional survey among the Chinese population aged 60 years and over.ParticipantsA total of 163296 females and 148724 males aged 65 and over in 2019 in urban China.Outcome measuresPrevalence, risk factors and gender differences in geriatric depressive symptoms among urban elderly.ResultsApproximately 95.69% of the participants had depressive symptoms according to the CESD-10, with no statistically significant gender difference of 52.15% in females and 47.85% in males. Logistic regression findings suggest that geriatric depressive symptoms are significantly associated with the lack of eldercare (OR=2.427, female; OR=1.426, male), living alone(OR= 1.430, female; OR= 1.179, male), ADL dysfunction (OR=1.528, female; OR=1.246, male), and impaired sensory and communication ability (OR=1.338, female; OR=1.185, male) among both female and male participants. Remarkably, geriatric depressive symptoms are only significantly associated with age (≥75, OR = 1.327), marital status (unmarried, OR=1.598), the number of children (no children, OR=2.271), and the living arrangement (living alone, OR= 1.430) among female participants.ConclusionSignificant gender differences in these associations were found for living alone, ADL dysfunction and impaired sensory and communication ability. Moreover, the study emphasized that the gender difference exists in terms of geriatric depression in urban China. Females are more likely to experience depressive than males with the same circumstances

As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health

    Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is practiced in the Chinese health care system for more than 2,000 years. In recent years, herbal medicines, which are used to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) in China based on TCM or modern pharmacological theories have attracted considerable attention. In this paper, we discuss etiology and pathogenesis of AD, TCM therapy, and herbal extracts for the treatment of AD. There is evidence to suggest that TCM therapy may offer certain complementary cognitive benefits for the treatment of AD. Chinese herb may have advantages with multiple target regulation compared with the single-target antagonist in view of TCM

    Explaining Individual Subjective Well-Being of Urban China Based on the Four-Capital Model

    A growing body of literature explains subjective well-being (SWB) from different perspectives. The statement of “built, human, social, and natural capital are necessary determinants of SWB” is named the four-capital model. Based on a cross-sectional dataset in 2013, which included 3293 individuals and covered the urban areas of most provinces in China, this paper employs the four-capital model to explain individual SWB of urban China. We select individual income and household income per capita as proxies of built capital; physical health and education as proxies of human capital; social connection and social trust as proxies of social capital; and air quality as a proxy of natural capital. In the four-capital model, household income per capita and physical health have almost the same and larger positive impacts on individual SWB of urban China; social connection, social trust, and air quality have smaller and diminishing positive impacts on individual SWB of urban China; and individual income and education are statistically insignificant. The empirical results offer guidance on how to achieve human-centered urbanization for China. This paper provides insights into how to further improve human well-being of urban residents in China and the applicability of the four-capital model in explaining SWB at the individual level

    Internet Use and Better-Informed Divorce in China

    China has witnessed a rapid expansion in Internet penetration in recent years, with profound impacts on people’s family life and marital relationships. This paper aims to examine the causal effects and functionary of information access through Internet on marital stability. This paper identifies a robust association between Internet use and increasing divorce rates in China by using nationally representative, individual-level survey data and province-level aggregate data. Various regression techniques and specifications demonstrated the statistical and economic significance of the association. Given the ever-expanding role of the Internet and the serious consequences of divorce on families and society, it is imperative that we study the underlying mechanisms as the first step toward socially responsible policymaking. Our analysis revealed a significant mediating effect of the self-reported importance of Internet information acquisition, the frequency of chatting with online friends, the frequency of meeting with online friends, and the intensity of Internet use. These findings are consistent with the theory that the increase in divorce decisions is due to better information access and is, therefore, rational and that policies such as a mandatory cooling-off period for divorce may lower societal welfare. We also conducted a series of heterogeneity analyses that showed, among other findings, that the Internet effect is stronger for women

    Calibration of Near Infrared Spectroscopy of Apples with Different Fruit Sizes to Improve Soluble Solids Content Model Performance

    The transmission spectrum of apples is affected by the fruit’s size, which leads to poor prediction performance of the soluble solids content (SSC) models built for their different apple sizes. In this paper, three sets of near infrared (NIR) spectra of apples with various apple diameters were collected by applying NIR spectroscopy detection equipment to compare the spectra differences among various apple diameter groups. The NIR spectra of apples were corrected by studying the extinction rates within different apples. The corrected spectra were used to develop a partial least squares prediction model for their soluble solids content. Compared with the prediction model of the soluble solids content of apples without size correction, the Rp of PLSR improved from 0.769 to 0.869 and RMSEP declined from 0.990 to 0.721 in the small fruit diameter group; the Rp of PLSR improved from 0.787 to 0.932 and RMSEP declined from 0.878 to 0.531 in the large fruit diameter group. The proposed apple spectra correction method is effective and can be used to reduce the influence of sample diameter on NIR spectra

    Study on the Effect of Apple Size Difference on Soluble Solids Content Model Based on Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy

    Soluble solids content (SSC) is a vital evaluation index for the internal quality of apples, and NIR spectroscopy is the preferred technique for predicting the SSC of apples. Due to the differences in fruits’ sizes, their SSC prediction models have poor robustness and low prediction accuracy, so it is important to eliminate the effects brought by the differences in fruit sizes to improve the accuracy of fruit sorting models. The NIR spectra of apples with different fruit sizes were collected by applying NIR spectroscopy online detection device, and after various preprocessing of the spectra, the partial least squares (PLS) models of apple SSC were established, respectively, and then the modeling set in the apple fruit size group of 75 mm–85 mm was used to predict the prediction set samples in the apple fruit size group of 65 mm–75 mm and 85 mm–95 mm, respectively. To better address the effects of apple size differences, data fusion techniques were used to perform an intermediate fusion of apple fruit diameter and spectra, firstly, the competitive adaptive reweighting algorithm (CARS) and the continuous projection algorithm (SPA) were used to select spectral variables and build their prediction models for apple SSC, respectively, and the results showed that the models built with 61 spectral variables selected by CARS had better performance, greatly reduced the amount of data involved in modeling, effectively simplified the model, and improved the stability of the model. The apple size variables were added to the wavelength variables selected by CARS, and the data were normalized to establish a PLS model of apple SSC with the normalized spectral and apple fruit diameter data, and the results showed that the size compensation model based on intermediate fusion had the best prediction performance, with the prediction set Rp of 0.886 for fruit diameter of 65 mm–75 mm, RMSEP of 0.536%, and its prediction set Rp was 0.913 and RMSEP was 0.497% for the fruit diameter of 85 mm–95 mm. Therefore, adding the fruit diameter variable to establish the size-compensated model of apple SSC can improve the prediction performance of the model
