    Efficient multipartite entanglement purification with non-identical states

    We present an efficient and general multipartite entanglement purification protocol (MEPP) for N-photon systems in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states with non-identical input states. As a branch of entanglement purification, besides the cases of successful purification, the recurrence MEPP actually has the reusable discarded items which are usually regarded as a failure. Our protocol contains two parts for bit-flip error correction. The first one is the conventional MEPP, corresponding successful cases. The second one includes two efficient approaches, recycling purification with entanglement link and direct residual entanglement purification, that can utilize discarded items. We also make a comparison between two approaches. Which method to use depends on initial input states, and in most cases the approach of direct residual purification is optimal for it not only may obtain a higher fidelity entangled state but also it does not require additional sophisticated links. In addition, for phase-flip errors, the discarded items still have available residual entanglement in the case of different input states. With these approaches, this MEPP has a higher efficiency than all previous MEPPs and it may have potential applications in the future long-distance quantum communications and networks.Comment: 20 pages,12 figure

    Relation between quantum illumination and quantum parameter estimation

    Quantum illumination (QI) leverages entangled lights to detect the potential presence of low-reflective objects in a region surrounded by a thermal bath. Homologously, quantum parameter estimation utilizes non-classical probes to accurately estimate the value of the unknown parameter(s) of interest in a system. There appears to be a certain connection between these two areas. However, they are commonly studied using different figures of merit: signal-to-noise ratio and quantum Fisher information. In this study, we prove that the two measures are equivalent to QI in the limit of zero object reflectivity. We further demonstrate this equivalence by investigating QI protocols employing non-Gaussian states, which are obtained by de-Gaussifying the two-mode squeezed vacuum state with photon addition and photon subtraction. However, our analysis leads to a no-go result which demonstrates that de-Gaussification operations do not offer an advantage compared to the null case.Comment: 9 pages,3 figure

    Screening and analysis of soda saline-alkali stress induced up- regulated genes in sugar sorghum

    Soil salinization severely constrains the growth of crops, which ultimately leads to reduced yields. Because Sorghum dochna (common name sugar sorghum) has the advantageous properties of excellent salt stress resis- tance, high biomass, and tremendous flexibility for utilization as food, livestock feed, and industrial products, this species holds great potential to be further developed as a primary alternative crop. To elucidate the molecular mechanism that governs sugar sorghum’s adaptation to high salinity environments, we constructed a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) cDNA library from sugar sorghum transcripts that contains the soda saline-alkali induced up-regulated genes from the resistant variety M-81E. The SSH cDNA library was screened by using the colony hybridization method, and the ESTs obtained were sequenced and analyzed. A total of 200 EST clones were identified, representing 127 unigenes (6 contigs and 121 singlets). A Blast analysis showed that 48 ESTs (46.6%) have annotated functions in GenBank, 55 ESTs (53.4%) have unknown functions (or encode hypothetical proteins), and 24 ESTs (18.9%) have no blast hits. The majority of the hypothetical ESTs from the cDNA library displayed very high sequence similarity with their homologs found through GenBank. A clustering analysis of the ESTs with known functions indicated that a wide variety of genes were induced during the salt stress treatment. These genes were found to function in photosynthesis, material and energy metabolism (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, co-enzymes, ions, etc.), synthesis or maintenance of constituents of the cell wall and cell membrane, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, and as water channels. This indicates that sugar sorghum tolerance to soda saline-alkali stress results from the coordinated functions of many genes

    Interactions between excitation and extraction modes in an organic-based plasmon-emitting diode

    International audienceThis study demonstrates the feasibility of enhancing an organic-based plasmon-emitting diode on the directional light beaming efficiency by near-field surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in both metal grating and polymer grating nanostructures. The interaction between organic/metal and PR/metal interfaces to cause SPPs can facilitate specific directional emission. Directional emission properties give rise to a spectral band-gap response enhancement. Our results also verify that efficient surface plasmon grating coupled emissions (SPGCEs) can improve directionality under index-mediated tuning. Experimental results indicate SP decoupling emission in the visible light. The subsequent emission intensity can increase by up to 3.5 times. Moreover, a narrow FWHM of approximately 60 nm in a defined direction is achieved, and an SP coupling rate is approximately 80% on the metal grating structure. The proposed method is highly promising for use as an active plasmonic emitter and discoloration biosensors with enhanced SPPs resonance energy, owing to interactions with the organic/metal nanostructur

    Synthesis and Sensing Properties of ZnO/ZnS Nanocages

    Large-scale uniform ZnO dumbbells and ZnO/ZnS hollow nanocages were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route combined with subsequent etching treatment. The nanocages were formed through preferential dissolution of the twinned (0001) plane of ZnO dumbbells. Due to their special morphology, the hollow nanocages show better sensing properties to ethanol than ZnO dumbbells. The gain in sensitivity is attributed to both the interface between ZnO and ZnS heterostructure and their hollow architecture that promotes analyte diffusion and increases the available active surface area

    AIMS: All-Inclusive Multi-Level Segmentation

    Despite the progress of image segmentation for accurate visual entity segmentation, completing the diverse requirements of image editing applications for different-level region-of-interest selections remains unsolved. In this paper, we propose a new task, All-Inclusive Multi-Level Segmentation (AIMS), which segments visual regions into three levels: part, entity, and relation (two entities with some semantic relationships). We also build a unified AIMS model through multi-dataset multi-task training to address the two major challenges of annotation inconsistency and task correlation. Specifically, we propose task complementarity, association, and prompt mask encoder for three-level predictions. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization capacity of our method compared to other state-of-the-art methods on a single dataset or the concurrent work on segmenting anything.     Numerical Simulation Characteristics of Logging Response in Water Injection Well by Reproducing Kernel Method

    Reproducing kernel Hilbert space method (RKHSM) is an effective method. This paper, for the first time, uses the traditional RKHSM for solving the temperature field in two phase flows of multilayer water injection well. According to 2D oil-water temperature field mathematical model of two phase flows in cylindrical coordinates, selecting the properly initial and boundary conditions, by the process of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization, the analytical solution was given by reproducing kernel functions in a series expansion form, and the approximate solution was expressed by n-term summation. The satisfied numerical results were carried out by Mathematica 7.0, showing that the larger the difference between injected water temperature and initial borehole temperature or water injection conditions, the more obvious the indication of water accepting zones. The numerical examples evidence the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method of the two phase flows in engineering

    Strategies for Searching Video Content with Text Queries or Video Examples

    The large number of user-generated videos uploaded on to the Internet everyday has led to many commercial video search engines, which mainly rely on text metadata for search. However, metadata is often lacking for user-generated videos, thus these videos are unsearchable by current search engines. Therefore, content-based video retrieval (CBVR) tackles this metadata-scarcity problem by directly analyzing the visual and audio streams of each video. CBVR encompasses multiple research topics, including low-level feature design, feature fusion, semantic detector training and video search/reranking. We present novel strategies in these topics to enhance CBVR in both accuracy and speed under different query inputs, including pure textual queries and query by video examples. Our proposed strategies have been incorporated into our submission for the TRECVID 2014 Multimedia Event Detection evaluation, where our system outperformed other submissions in both text queries and video example queries, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed approaches
