Over the past decades, the public school enterprise has been saturated with a myriad of social, political and academic ills. Problems such as reductions in state and federal funding, double digit percent student drop-outs, misidentification of students with learning disabilities, insufficient development of language skills in limited or non-English speaking students, shortage of highly qualified classroom teachers, unsafe schools, and students lacking college readiness are a few barriers to a student’s success in school. Perhaps the most disturbing of these issues, however, is the high percentage of students from low income households who are not meeting academic standards on statewide assessments. According to the Southern Education Foundation (2015), approximately 51% of all students attending American public schools live in poverty. Research suggests that a large number of these students are ethnic minorities (De Fraga & Oliveira, 2010). Inasmuch, as these nuisances weigh heavily upon our educational system, it is a widely held belief that parental involvement is a reliable predictor of a student’s academic success in school
Searching for magnetic monopoles trapped in accelerator material at the Large Hadron Collider
If produced in high energy particle collisions at the LHC, magnetic monopoles
could stop in material surrounding the interaction points. Obsolete parts of
the beam pipe near the CMS interaction region, which were exposed to the
products of pp and heavy ion collisions, were analysed using a SQUID-based
magnetometer. The purpose of this work is to quantify the performance of the
magnetometer in the context of a monopole search using a small set of samples
of accelerator material ahead of the 2013 shutdown.Comment: 11 page
Effects of ATLAS Tile calorimeter failures on jets and missing transverse energy measurements
Failures of the ATLAS Tile calorimeter would affect the jet energy resolution and would fake tails of missing transverse energy. Significant effects are expected in processes involving high transverse momentum jets ( GeV). These effects, their consequences, as well as methods to minimize them, are studied using simulated data for various degradation topologies and for different physics processes
Interactions of Heavy Hadrons using Regge Phenomenology and the Quark Gluon String Model
The search for stable heavy exotic hadrons is a promising way to observe new
physics processes at collider experiments. The discovery potential for such
particles can be enhanced or suppressed by their interactions with detector
material. This paper describes a model for the interactions in matter of stable
hadrons containing an exotic quark of charges or
using Regge phenomenology and the Quark Gluon String Model. The influence of
such interactions on searches at the LHC is also discussed
Local Hadronic Calibration of Single Pion Data from the Combined ATLAS Testbeam of 2004
For the first time, the local hadronic calibration scheme has been applied to real data from the combined test beam of 2004. In this note, the performance of the weighting of the combined test beam data is shown in relation to Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the local calibration scheme when applied to simulated jets in full ATLAS set-up has also been demonstrated, and compared with the current default jet calibration, the "global" method. The local hadronic calibration achieves a calorimeter linearity within 3%, and the linearities of simulation and test beam data after weighting are in agreement. The calibration improves the resolution of simulated test beam data for beam energies larger than 8 GeV, and energies larger than 20 GeV for the data. In addition, the local hadronic calibration is shown to be a stable method for compensating the calorimeter system of ATLAS
The HIBEAM/NNBAR Calorimeter Prototype
The HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment is a free-neutron search for
sterile and oscillations planned to be installed at
the European Spallation Source under construction in Lund, Sweden. A key
component in the experiment is the detector to identify
annihilation events, which will produce on average four pions with a final
state invariant mass of two nucleons, around GeV. The beamline and
experiment are shielded from magnetic fields which would suppress transitions, thus no momentum measurement will be
possible. Additionally, calorimetry for particles with kinetic energies below
MeV is challenging, as traditional sampling calorimeters used in HEP
would suffer from poor shower statistics. A design study is underway to use a
novel approach of a hadronic range measurement in multiple plastic scintillator
layers, followed by EM calorimetery with lead glass. A prototype calorimeter
system is being built, and will eventually be installed at an ESS test beam
