Air handling system optimisation
Often each floor of a building has an air handling system consisting of a plant room, ducting and equipment such as fans and heaters. The cost of the system consists of the capital cost of the equipment and the operating cost to satisfy the thermal loads. An efficient method is required for evaluating the operating costs when the configuration of the system is specified and the thermal loads are known. The operating cost of a particular configuration are obtained by solving a nonlinear program. The method is efficient since it consists of solving a sequence of single period models
Airline crew scheduling
An airline must cover each flight leg with a full complement of cabin crew in a manner consistent with safety regulations and award requirements. Methods are investigated for solving the set partitioning and covering problem. A test example illustrates the problem and the use of heuristics. The Study Group achieved an understanding of the problem and a plan for further work

Impacts of elevated atmospheric ozone on peatland below-ground DOC characteristics
Rising concentrations of tropospheric ozone are having detrimental impacts on the growth
of crop and forest species and some studies have reported inhibition of the allocation of
carbon below ground. The effects of ozone on peatland ecosystems have received relatively
little attention, despite their importance within the global carbon cycle. During this study,
cores from a Welsh minerotrophic fen and ombrotrophic bog were exposed to four ambient/
elevated ozone concentration regimes representing current and predicted 2050 profiles.
A large and significant reduction in the concentration of porewater dissolved organic carbon
(DOC) was recorded in the fen cores exposed to the elevated ozone concentrations (up to
−55%), with a concurrent shift to a higher molecularweight of the remaining soil carbon. No
effects of ozone on DOC concentrations or characteristics were recorded for the bog cores.
The data suggest higher ozone sensitivity of plants growing in the fen-type peatland, that
the impacts on the vegetation may affect soil carbon characteristics through a reduction in
root exudates and that theremay have been a shift in the source of substrate DOC for microbial
consumption from vegetation exudates to native soil carbon. Theremay also have been
a direct effect of ozone molecules reacting with soil organic matter after being transported
into the soil through the aerenchyma tissue of the overlying vegetation. These qualitative
changes in the soil carbon in response to elevated ozone may have important implications
for carbon cycling in peatland ecosystems, and therefore climate change
The impact of college student immersion service learning trips on coping with stress and vocational identity
This study examined the impact of service learning immersion trips on vocational identity and coping with stress among college students. Fifty-one students (15 males, 36 females) who participated in immersion trips and 76 students (25 males, 51 females) in a non-immersion control group completed a series of questionnaires directly before and immediately after both fall and spring break immersion trips, and during a four-month follow up. Results suggest that, after returning from an immersion trip, students report a greater ability to cope with stress and a somewhat stronger sense of vocational identity relative to students who do not participate in immersion trips
Ghana coastal fisheries governance dialogue: Presentations, discussions and outcomes from a stakeholder forum on issues for reforming governance of Ghana’s coastal fisheries
This meeting, the second national Fisheries Governance Dialogue, aimed to help stakeholders in the fisheries sector generate a shared understanding of critical lessons and pathways for fisheries co-management success in Ghana. This was a direct response to the call from both fisheries communities and the government of Ghana for a radical change from the way fisheries resources are currently being managed. The meeting was attended by 60 men and women from stakeholder organizations and communities, and commenced with presentations on co-management experiences from local, regional and international participants. This was followed by panel discussions to extract lessons that specifically related to successfully implementing co-management in Ghana’s fisheries. Finally, breakout groups addressed in greater detail some issues of importance to fisheries governance reform in Ghana. While fisheries co-management is not a new concept in Ghana, participants heard that previous attempts to initiate these systems proved unsustainable. A number of lessons were drawn from these past experiences
Modelling of Electroluminescence in Polymers Using a Bipolar Charge Transport Model
Electroluminescence (EL) in polymeric materials is thought to occur due to the energy dissipation process from the recombination of opposite polarity charge carriers. It is considered as an indication of storage and transport of charge carriers in cable insulation subject to electrical stresses and may indicate the change in charge movement due to aging or degradation processes. Under ac electric fields, the interaction of opposite polarity charge carriers at the interface of polymer/conductor is enhanced compared with dc conditions, and seems to contribute a lot to the electroluminescence rather than the charge behaviours in the bulk of polymers. The dynamics of charge carriers both at the interface of polymer/conductor and in the bulk of polymers is investigated through a simulation work using a bipolar charge transport model. Figure 1 compares experimental electroluminescence results with simulated data from the recombination of injected charge carriers. A Comparison between Electroluminescence Models and Experimental Results
Electrical insulation ages and degrades until its eventual failure under electrical stress. One cause of this relates to the movement and accumulation of charge within the insulation. The emission of a low level of light from polymeric materials while under electrical stressing occurs before the onset of currently detectable material degradation. This light is known as electroluminescence (EL) and under an ac electric field is thought to relate to the interaction of charge in close proximity to the electrode-polymer interface. Understanding the cause of this light emission gives a very high-resolution method of monitoring charge interaction and its influence on material ageing. A possible cause of this light emission is the bipolar charge recombination theory. This theory involves the injection, trapping and recombination of charge carriers during each half cycle of the applied field [1]. This work compares two models that to simulate the EL emission according to this bipolar charge recombination theory. Model 1 assumes a fixed space charge region and all injected charge is uniformly distributed in this region with charges able to either become trapped or to recombine with opposite polarity charge carriers [2]. This recombination relates directly the excitation needed for the emission of a photon of light as measured in experiments. Model 2 develops on this by accounting for the transport and extraction of charge with an exponential distribution of trap levels rather than a uniform distribution [3]. Figure 1 shows a good correlation between the two models and experimental data. The full paper will describe the models in more detail and present results comparing the simulated and experimental results under various applied waveforms. Model 1 and model 2 both provide a good correlation with experimental data but model 2 allows a greater understanding of the space charge profile in the region close to the electrodes as well as the shape of the conduction current. Further work involves developing these models to support changes in the charge trapping profiles due to material ageing and supporting simulated results with measured conduction current
