    MOOSE ANTLER MORPHOLOGY AND ASYMMETRY ON ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK

    Isle Royale National Park, an island archipelago in Lake Superior, supports moose at higher density (1–4/km2) relative to most other North American sites. We compared antler size and asymmetry measurements from Isle Royale moose that died of natural causes to measurements available for other regional moose populations in published literature. We used these comparisons to test predictions that antlers of Isle Royale moose would be smaller and more asymmetric than other regional populations due to the high population density and the resulting ecological conditions on Isle Royale. Moose on Isle Royale follow the same patterns of antler development as elsewhere, reaching maximum size at 7–8 years of age with slight declines after age 10–12. However, these moose develop antlers that are much smaller than all measured North American subpopulations. Antler size was most comparable to moose from Scandinavia where moose exist at comparably high population density. Boone and Crockett score, which is commonly used to compare antler size, performed poorly at ranking individuals with large antlers suggesting that more biologically relevant measures such as antler volume should be considered for comparisons of antler size. Pedicle constriction was found to be a reliable indicator of senescence among old bulls. Antler asymmetry was negatively related to antler size and was more extreme than asymmetry measured in Alaskan moose. Moose age had no detectable effect on the degree of antler asymmetry. In general, bull moose on Isle Royale develop smaller, more asymmetric antlers than other North American subpopulations which exist at lower density, consistent with the hypothesis that these qualities are related to nutrient limitation caused by high population density. Results, however, may also reflect genetic differences and artifacts of sampling

    Does Predation Influence the Seasonal and Diel Timing of Moose Calving in Central Ontario, Canada?

    Birth synchrony is well documented among ungulates and is hypothesised to maximize neonate survival, either by minimizing the risk of predation through predator swamping or by synchronising birthing with increased seasonal food availability. We used encapsulated vaginal implant transmitters to locate and capture neonatal moose calves and document the seasonal and diel timing of parturition in two adjacent study areas with different predation pressure in central Ontario, Canada. We tested the hypothesis that predation promotes earlier and more synchronous birth of moose calves. Across both areas, proportionately more births occurred during the afternoon and fewer than expected occurred overnight. Mean date of calving averaged 1.5 days earlier and calving was also more synchronous in the study area with heavier predation pressure, despite average green-up date and peak Normalized Difference Vegetation Index date occurring 2 days later in this study area than in the area receiving lighter predation pressure. We encourage analysis of data on timing of parturition from additional study areas experiencing varying degrees of predation pressure to better clarify the influence of predation in driving seasonal and diel timing of parturition in temperate ungulate

    A single-particle characterization of a mobile Versatile Aerosol Concentration Enrichment System for exposure studies

    BACKGROUND: An Aerosol Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (ATOFMS) was used to investigate the size and chemical composition of fine concentrated ambient particles (CAPs) in the size range 0.2–2.6 μm produced by a Versatile Aerosol Concentration Enrichment System (VACES) contained within the Mobile Ambient Particle Concentrator Exposure Laboratory (MAPCEL). The data were collected during a study of human exposure to CAPs, in Edinburgh (UK), in February-March 2004. The air flow prior to, and post, concentration in the VACES was sampled in turn into the ATOFMS, which provides simultaneous size and positive and negative mass spectral data on individual fine particles. RESULTS: The particle size distribution was unaltered by the concentrator over the size range 0.2–2.6 μm, with an average enrichment factor during this study of ~5 (after dilution of the final air stream). The mass spectra from single particles were objectively grouped into 20 clusters using the multivariate K-means algorithm and then further grouped manually, according to similarity in composition and time sequence, into 8 main clusters. The particle ensemble was dominated by pure and reacted sea salt and other coarse inorganic dusts (as a consequence of the prevailing maritime-source climatology during the study), with relatively minor contributions from carbonaceous and secondary material. Very minor variations in particle composition were noted pre- and post-particle concentration, but overall there was no evidence of any significant change in particle composition. CONCLUSION: These results confirm, via single particle analysis, the preservation of the size distribution and chemical composition of fine ambient PM in the size range 0.2–2.6 μm after passage through the VACES concentration instrumentation

    We have studied the magnetotransport properties of a high mobility two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) system in a 10nm GaAs quantum well (QW) with densities in range of 0.7-1.6*10^10 cm^-2 on the metallic side of the zero-field 'metal-insulator transition' (MIT). In a parallel field well above B_c that suppresses the metallic conductivity, the 2DHG exhibits a conductivity g(T)~0.3(e^2/h)lnT reminiscent of weak localization. The experiments are consistent with the coexistence of two phases in our system: a metallic phase and a weakly insulating Fermi liquid phase having a percolation threshold close to B_c

    Good adherence to HAART and improved survival in a community HIV/AIDS treatment and care programme: the experience of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), Kampala, Uganda

    BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may result in treatment failure and death. Most reports of the effect of adherence to HAART on mortality come from studies where special efforts are made to provide HAART under ideal conditions. However, there are few reports of the impact of non-adherence to HAART on mortality from community HIV/AIDS treatment and care programmes in developing countries. We therefore conducted a study to assess the effect of adherence to HAART on survival in The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) community HAART programme in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: The study was a retrospective cohort of 897 patients who initiated HAART at TASO clinic, Kampala, between May 2004 and December 2006. A total of 7,856 adherence assessments were performed on the data. Adherence was assessed using a combination of self-report and pill count methods. Patients who took 95%. The crude death rate was 12.2 deaths per 100 patient-years, with a rate of 42.5 deaths per 100 patient-years for non-adherent patients and 6.1 deaths per 100 patient-years for adherent patients. Non-adherence to ART was significantly associated with mortality. Patients with a CD4 count of less than 50 cells/mm3 had a higher mortality (HR = 4.3; 95% CI: 2.22-5.56) compared to patients with a CD4 count equal to or greater than 50 cells/mm3 (HR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.79-2.38). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that good adherence and improved survival are feasible in community HIV/AIDS programmes such as that of TASO, Uganda. However, there is need to support community HAART programmes to overcome the challenges of funding to provide sustainable supplies particularly of antiretroviral drugs; provision of high quality clinical and laboratory support; and achieving a balance between expansion and quality of services. Measures for the early identification and treatment of HIV infected people including home-based VCT and HAART should be strengthened

    Selective small molecule inhibitors of glycogen synthase kinase-3 modulate glycogen metabolism and gene transcription

    AbstractBackground: Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a serine/threonine protein kinase, the activity of which is inhibited by a variety of extracellular stimuli including insulin, growth factors, cell specification factors and cell adhesion. Consequently, inhibition of GSK-3 activity has been proposed to play a role in the regulation of numerous signalling pathways that elicit pleiotropic cellular responses. This report describes the identification and characterisation of potent and selective small molecule inhibitors of GSK-3.Results: SB-216763 and SB-415286 are structurally distinct maleimides that inhibit GSK-3α in vitro, with Kis of 9 nM and 31 nM respectively, in an ATP competitive manner. These compounds inhibited GSK-3β with similar potency. However, neither compound significantly inhibited any member of a panel of 24 other protein kinases. Furthermore, treatment of cells with either compound stimulated responses characteristic of extracellular stimuli that are known to inhibit GSK-3 activity. Thus, SB-216763 and SB-415286 stimulated glycogen synthesis in human liver cells and induced expression of a β-catenin-LEF/TCF regulated reporter gene in HEK293 cells. In both cases, compound treatment was demonstrated to inhibit cellular GSK-3 activity as assessed by activation of glycogen synthase, which is a direct target of this kinase.Conclusions: SB-216763 and SB-415286 are novel, potent and selective cell permeable inhibitors of GSK-3. Therefore, these compounds represent valuable pharmacological tools with which the role of GSK-3 in cellular signalling can be further elucidated. Furthermore, development of similar compounds may be of use therapeutically in disease states associated with elevated GSK-3 activity such as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative disease
