Double-stranded RNA elements associated with the MVX disease of Agaricus bisporus
Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) has been isolated from Agaricus bisporus fruit bodies exhibiting a wide range of disease symptoms. The symptoms which occurred singularly or in combination included; bare cropping areas on commercial beds (primordia disruption), crop delay, premature veil opening, off- or brown-coloured mushrooms, sporophore malformations and loss of crop yield. All symptoms were associated with loss of yield and/or product quality. Collectively, these symptoms are described as mushroom virus X (MVX) disease. The dsRNA titre was much lower than that previously encountered with the La France viral disease of mushrooms and a modified cellulose CF11 protocol was used for their detection. A broad survey of cultivated mushrooms from the British industry identified dsRNA elements ranging between 640 bp and 20.2 kbp; the majority have not previously been described in A. bisporus. 26 dsRNA elements were identified with a maximum of 17, apparently non-encapsidated dsRNA elements, in any one sample. Three dsRNAs (16.2, 9.4 and 2.4 kbp) were routinely found in mushrooms asymptomatic for MVX. Previously, La France disease was effectively contained and controlled by minimising the on-farm production and spread of basidiospores. Our on-farm observations suggest that MVX could be spread by infected spores and/or mycelial fragments
Orbital dynamics in ferromagnetic transition metal oxides
We consider a model of strongly correlated electrons interacting by
superexchange orbital interactions in the ferromagnetic phase of LaMnO. It
is found that the classical orbital order with alternating occupied
orbitals has a full rotational symmetry at orbital degeneracy, and the
excitation spectrum derived using the linear spin-wave theory is gapless. The
quantum (fluctuation) corrections to the order parameter and to the ground
state energy restore the cubic symmetry of the model. By applying a uniaxial
pressure orbital degeneracy is lifted in a tetragonal field and one finds an
orbital-flop phase with a gap in the excitation spectrum. In two dimensions the
classical order is more robust near the orbital degeneracy point and quantum
effects are suppressed. The orbital excitation spectra obtained using finite
temperature diagonalization of two-dimensional clusters consist of a
quasiparticle accompanied by satellite structures. The orbital waves found
within the linear spin-wave theory provide an excellent description of the
dominant pole of these spectra.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Phase diagram of a generalized Hubbard model applied to orbital order in manganites
The magnetic phase diagram of a two-dimensional generalized Hubbard model
proposed for manganites is studied within Hartree-Fock approximation. In this
model the hopping matrix includes anisotropic diagonal hopping matrix elements
as well as off-diagonal elements. The antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic
(F), canted (C) and paramagnetic (P) states are included in the analysis as
possible phases. It is found that away from half-filling only the canted and F
states may exist and AF and P states which are possible for the usual Hubbard
model do not appear. This is because the F order has already developed for
on-site repulsion U=0 due to the hopping matrix of the generalized model. When
applied for manganites the orbital degree is described by a pseudospin. Thus
our ``magnetic'' phase diagram obtained physically describes how orbital order
changes with and with doping for manganites. Part of our results are
consistent with other numerical calculations and some experiments.Comment: 5 eps figures; a note added, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Magnetoresistance in Mn pyrochlore: electrical transport in a low carrier density ferromagnet
We discuss magnetotransport in a low density electron gas coupled to spin
fluctuations near and above a ferromagnetic transition. Provided the density is
low enough (, with the ferromagnetic
correlation length), spin polarons form in an intermediate temperature regime
above . Both in the spin polaron regime, and in the itinerant regime
nearer , the magnetoresistance is large. We propose that this provides a
good model for ``colossal'' magnetoresistance in the pyrochlore
TlScMnO, fundamentally different from the mechanism in the
perovskite manganites such as LaSrMnO.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, + 3 figure
Spin and Charge Structure Factor of the 2-d Hubbard Model
The spin and charge structure factors are calculated for the Hubbard model on
the square lattice near half-filling using a spin-rotation invariant six-slave
boson representation. The charge structure factor shows a broad maximum at the
zone corner and is found to decrease monotonically with increasing interaction
strength and electron density and increasing temperature. The spin structure
factor develops with increasing interaction two incommensurate peaks at the
zone boundary and along the zone diagonal. Comparison with results of Quantum
Monte Carlo and variational calculations is carried out and the agreement is
found to be good. The limitations of an RPA-type approach are pointed out.Comment: 18 pages, revtex, 13 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Manganites at Quarter Filling: Role of Jahn-Teller Interactions
We have analyzed different correlation functions in a realistic spin-orbital
model for half-doped manganites. Using a finite-temperature diagonalization
technique the CE phase was found in the charge-ordered phase in the case of
small antiferromagnetic interactions between electrons. It is shown
that a key ingredient responsible for stabilization of the CE-type spin and
orbital-ordered state is the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) interaction between
next-nearest Mn neighbors mediated by the breathing mode distortion of
Mn octahedra and displacements of Mn ions. The topological phase
factor in the Mn-Mn hopping leading to gap formation in one-dimensional models
for the CE phase as well as the nearest neighbor JT coupling are not able to
produce the zigzag chains typical for the CE phase in our model.Comment: 16 pages with 16 figures, contains a more detailed parameter estimate

Photoemission spectra of LaMnO3 controlled by orbital excitations
We investigate the spectral function of a hole moving in the orbital-ordered
ferromagnetic planes of LaMnO, and show that it depends critically on the
type of orbital ordering. While the hole does not couple to the spin
excitations, it interacts strongly with the excitations of orbitals
(orbitons), leading to new type of quasiparticles with a dispersion on the
orbiton energy scale and with strongly enhanced mass and reduced weight.
Therefore we predict a large redistribution of spectral weight with respect to
the bands found in local density approximation (LDA) or in LDA+U.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 3 figures embedded, figure 3 correcte
