Confronting the opioid crisis: Practical pain management and strategies: AOA 2018 critical issues symposium

The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis. Clinicians have been part of the problem because of overprescribing of narcotics for perioperative pain management. Clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology and science of addiction to improve perioperative management of pain for their patients. Multiple modalities for pain management exist that decrease the use of narcotics. Physical strategies, cognitive strategies, and multimodal medication can all provide improved pain relief and decrease the use of narcotics. National medical societies are developing clinical practice guidelines for pain management that incorporate multimodal strategies and multimodal medication. Changes to policy that improve provider education, access to naloxone, and treatment for addiction can decrease narcotic misuse and the risk of addiction

Project-based Service-Learning in an Instructional Technology Graduate Program

The study focused on the critical incidents that occurred to instructional design students when they were involved in project-based service-learning as part of a curriculum that lead to a master’s degree. The study provided an illustration that the workplace application of skills, knowledge, and understanding are enhanced through utilization. Students worked with local nonprofit agencies to provide instructional support ranging from needs assessments to delivery of course content. Results indicated that project-based service learning was an effective tool for promoting greater learning. The importance of learning through active participation and reflection was supported, and by extending learning beyond the classroom, students were able to apply their knowledge in ways that transformed their learning experience and fostered a sense of caring about others

Reaction of Group III Biheterocyclic Complexes

Group III alkyl complexes supported by a ferrocene diamide ligand (1,1′-fc(NSitBuMe_2)_2) have been found to be reactive toward aromatic N-heterocycles such as 1-methylimidazole and pyridines. These reactions were investigated experimentally and computationally. An initial C−H activation event is followed by a coupling reaction to form biheterocyclic complexes, in which one of the rings is dearomatized. In the case of 1-methylimidazole, the biheterocyclic compound could not be isolated and further led to an imidazole ring-opened product; in the case of pyridines, it transformed into an isomer with extended conjugation of double bonds. Mechanisms for both reactions are proposed on the basis of experimental and computational results. DFT calculations were also used to show that an energetically accessible pathway for the ring-opening of pyridines exists
