Evaluating the Use of Competing Items in a Multiple Schedule During Reinforcement Schedule Thinning
Multiple schedules are schedules of reinforcement that are often used to facilitate more manageable rates of a replacement behavior such as a communication response following functional communication training as an intervention for destructive behavior. Commonly, reinforcement schedule thinning involves multiple fading steps that can take more than 100 sessions to achieve therapeutic goals. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate a method for rapidly achieving fading steps in a multiple schedule by including competing items during the extinction interval. Four children diagnosed with autism successfully reached the terminal extinction interval with a ≥80% reduction in problem behavior. Two of the four participants reached the terminal extinction interval during a systematic assessment to identify an appropriate initial extinction interval. This study produced two important findings. First, the inclusion of competing items successfully and rapidly achieved the terminal extinction interval in a multiple schedule. Second, a novel use of a systematic assessment procedure identified participants for whom the competing items were unnecessary to rapidly achieve the terminal extinction interval
Morphology of liquid microstructures on chemically patterned surfaces
We study the equilibrium conformations of liquid microstructures on flat but chemically heterogeneous substrates using energy minimization computations. The surface patterns, which establish regions of different surface energy, induce deformations of the liquid–solid contact line. Depending on the geometry, these deformations either promote or impede capillary breakup and bulge formation. The contact angles of the liquid on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, as well as the pattern geometry and volume of liquid deposited, strongly affect the equilibrium shapes. Moreover, due to the small scale of the liquid features, the presence of chemical or topological surface defects significantly influence the final liquid shapes. Preliminary experiments with arrays of parallel hydrophilic strips produce shapes resembling the simulated forms. These encouraging results provide a basis for the development of high resolution lithography by direct wet printing
Ultraviolet/X-ray variability and the extended X-ray emission of the radio-loud broad absorption line quasar PG 1004+130
We present the results of recent Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Hubble Space
Telescope observations of the radio-loud (RL), broad absorption line (BAL)
quasar PG 1004+130. We compare our new observations to archival X-ray and UV
data, creating the most comprehensive, high signal-to-noise, multi-epoch,
spectral monitoring campaign of a RL BAL quasar to date. We probe for
variability of the X-ray absorption, the UV BAL, and the X-ray jet, on
month-year timescales. The X-ray absorber has a low column density of
cm when it is assumed to be fully
covering the X-ray emitting region, and its properties do not vary
significantly between the 4 observations. This suggests the observed absorption
is not related to the typical "shielding gas" commonly invoked in BAL quasar
models, but is likely due to material further from the central black hole. In
contrast, the CIV BAL shows strong variability. The equivalent width (EW) in
2014 is EW=11.240.56 \AA, showing a fractional increase of =1.160.11 from the 2003 observation, 3183 days earlier
in the rest-frame. This places PG 1004+130 among the most highly variable BAL
quasars. By combining Chandra observations we create an exposure 2.5 times
deeper than studied previously, with which to investigate the nature of the
X-ray jet and extended diffuse X-ray emission. An X-ray knot, likely with a
synchrotron origin, is detected in the radio jet ~8 arcsec (30 kpc) from the
central X-ray source with a spatial extent of ~4 arcsec (15 kpc). No similar
X-ray counterpart to the counterjet is detected. Asymmetric, non-thermal
diffuse X-ray emission, likely due to inverse Compton scattering of Cosmic

The Proven Key: Roles and Rules for Dictionaries in the Patent Office and the Courts
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, in its continuing effort to develop a patent claim construction jurisprudence that yields predictable results, has turned to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and similar sources with increasing frequency. This paper explores, from both an empirical and a normative perspective, the Federal Circuit\u27s effort to shift claim construction to a dictionary-based approach. In the empirical part, we present data showing that the Federal Circuit has, since its own in banc Markman decision in April 1995, used reference works such as dictionaries to construe claim terms with steadily increasing frequency. In addition, and contrary to what one might predict from some of the court\u27s earlier statements justifying reliance on dictionaries in claim construction, the Federal Circuit has relied on general purpose English language dictionaries more than twice as often as it has relied on more technical or specialized reference works. Indeed, the claim construction reference work the Federal Circuit has cited most often is Webster\u27s Third New International Dictionary, which by itself accounts for 25% of all such citations and 36% of all citations to general purpose English language dictionaries and similar sources. After demonstrating that the caprice with which judges currently may choose dictionaries effectively eliminates whatever neutrality and predictability gains the turn to dictionaries can offer, we show that the best route to a dictionary-based approach for settling a claim term\u27s ordinary meaning is an explicit change to the Patent Office rules governing patent examination. Specifically, we propose that the Patent Office require that every patent applicant put her dictionary selections (general purpose and technical) on the record during examination, and that any resulting issued patent state the applicant\u27s dictionary selections on its face. Only with such changes to Patent Office rules can the patent system hope to realize the neutrality and predictability goals that rightly animate the Federal Circuit\u27s turn to dictionaries
Debt maturity, risk, and asymmetric information
We test the implications of Flannery’s (1986) and Diamond’s (1991) models concerning the effects of risk and asymmetric information in determining debt maturity, and we examine the overall importance of informational asymmetries in debt maturity choices. We employ data from more than 6,000 commercial loans from 53 large U.S. banks. Our results for low-risk firms are consistent with the predictions of both theoretical models, but our findings for high-risk firms conflict with the predictions of Diamond’s model and with much of the empirical literature. Our findings also suggest a strong quantitative role for asymmetric information in explaining debt maturity.
Why do borrowers pledge collateral? new empirical evidence on the role of asymmetric information
An important theoretical literature motivates collateral as a mechanism that mitigates adverse selection, credit rationing, and other inefficiencies that arise when borrowers hold ex ante private information. There is no clear empirical evidence regarding the central implication of this literature—that a reduction in asymmetric information reduces the incidence of collateral. We exploit exogenous variation in lender information related to the adoption of an information technology that reduces ex ante private information, and compare collateral outcomes before and after adoption. Our results are consistent with this central implication of the private-information models and support the empirical importance of this theory.
Rural Community College Student Perceptions of Barriers to College Enrollment
Rural community college students face unique difficulties in higher education for many reasons, including the resources they typically have access to, their collective histories, and in many cases, the preparation they received in high school. These challenges might be low-performing secondary schools, a lack of tradition and precedence in attending college, and even limited technology connectivity. These difficulties can be seen as barriers to college attendance, and it is important to understand how rural community college students see these barriers, and even more important to understand how they can be overcome. The current study sought to take the first step in understanding what inhibits college student enrollment by exploring self-reported barriers to community college matriculation. Using two case study institutions and a modified survey instrument, results largely supported existing research in that preparation for postsecondary education and finances were critical in deciding whether or not to enroll in the community college. Additionally, parental enrollment in higher education was perceived to play a role in attending college, validating the growing literature base on college attendance, in general, and rural students in particular. Somewhat contradictory to the literature of rural education, however, was the finding that technology connectivity was not seen as a barrier to education
Changing the Ties That Bind? The Emerging Roles and Identities of General Practitioners and Managers in the New Clinical Commissioning Groups in the English NHS
The English National Health Service (NHS) is undergoing significant reorganization following the 2012 Health and Social Care Act. Key to these changes is the shift of responsibility for commissioning services from Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to general practitioners (GPs) working together in Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). This article is based on an empirical study that examined the development of emerging CCGs in eight case studies across England between September 2011 and June 2012. The findings are based on interviews with GPs and managers, observations of meetings, and reading of related documents. Scott’s notion that institutions are constituted by three pillars—the regulative, normative, and cognitive–cultural—is explored here. This approach helps to understand the changing roles and identities of doctors and managers implicated by the present reforms. This article notes the far reaching changes in the regulative pillar and questions how these changes will affect the normative and cultural–cognitive pillars
