    Supporting the learning of deaf students in higher education: a case study at Sheffield Hallam University

    This article is an examination of the issues surrounding support for the learning of deaf students in higher education (HE). There are an increasing number of deaf students attending HE institutes, and as such provision of support mechanisms for these students is not only necessary but essential. Deaf students are similar to their hearing peers, in that they will approach their learning and require differing levels of support dependant upon the individual. They will, however, require a different kind of support, which can be technical or human resource based. This article examines the issues that surround supporting deaf students in HE with use of a case study of provision at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), during the academic year 1994-95. It is evident that by considering the needs of deaf students and making changes to our teaching practices that all students can benefit

    Genetic inactivation of the epithelial Na(+) channel α-subunit (αENaC) in the renal collecting duct (CD) does not interfere with Na(+) and K(+) homeostasis in mice. However, inactivation in the CD and a part of the connecting tubule (CNT) induces autosomal recessive pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA-1) symptoms in subjects already on a standard diet. In the present study, we further examined the importance of αENaC in the CNT. Knockout mice with αENaC deleted primarily in a part of the CNT (CNT-KO) were generated using Scnn1a(lox/lox) mice and Atp6v1b1::Cre mice. With a standard diet, plasma Na(+) concentration ([Na(+)]) and [K(+)], and urine Na(+) and K(+) output were unaffected. Seven days of Na(+) restriction (0.01% Na(+)) led to a higher urine Na(+) output only on days 3-5, and after 7 days plasma [Na(+)] and [K(+)] were unaffected. In contrast, the CNT-KO mice were highly susceptible to a 2-day 5% K(+) diet and showed lower food intake and relative body weight, lower plasma [Na(+)], higher fractional excretion (FE) of Na(+), higher plasma [K(+)], and lower FE of K(+). The higher FE of Na(+) coincided with lower abundance and phosphorylation of the Na(+)-Cl(-) cotransporter.     Diffusion of particles moving with constant speed

    The propagation of light in a scattering medium is described as the motion of a special kind of a Brownian particle on which the fluctuating forces act only perpendicular to its velocity. This enforces strictly and dynamically the constraint of constant speed of the photon in the medium. A Fokker-Planck equation is derived for the probability distribution in the phase space assuming the transverse fluctuating force to be a white noise. Analytic expressions for the moments of the displacement along with an approximate expression for the marginal probability distribution function P(x,t)P(x,t) are obtained. Exact numerical solutions for the phase space probability distribution for various geometries are presented. The results show that the velocity distribution randomizes in a time of about eight times the mean free time (8t8t^*) only after which the diffusion approximation becomes valid. This factor of eight is a well known experimental fact. A persistence exponent of 0.435±0.0050.435 \pm 0.005 is calculated for this process in two dimensions by studying the survival probability of the particle in a semi-infinite medium.     Mechanisms, models and biomarkers in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    The last 30 years have seen a major advance in the understanding of the clinical and pathological heterogeneity of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and its overlap with frontotemporal dementia. Multiple, seemingly disparate biochemical pathways converge on a common clinical syndrome characterized by progressive loss of upper and lower motor neurons. Pathogenic themes in ALS include excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, altered energy metabolism, and most recently RNA mis-processing. The transgenic rodent, overexpressing mutant superoxide dismutase-1, is now only one of several models of ALS pathogenesis. The nematode, fruit fly and zebrafish all offer fresh insight, and the development of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived motor neurons holds promise for the screening of candidate therapeutics. The lack of useful biomarkers in ALS contributes to diagnostic delay, and the inability to stratify patients by prognosis may be an important factor in the failure of therapeutic trials. Biomarkers sensitive to disease activity might lessen reliance on clinical measures and survival as trial endpoints and reduce study length. Emerging proteomic markers of neuronal loss and glial activity in cerebrospinal fluid, a cortical signature derived from advanced structural and functional MRI, and the development of more sensitive measurements of lower motor neuron physiology are leading a new phase of biomarker-driven therapeutic discovery

    Partially fluidized shear granular flows: Continuum theory and MD simulations

    The continuum theory of partially fluidized shear granular flows is tested and calibrated using two dimensional soft particle molecular dynamics simulations. The theory is based on the relaxational dynamics of the order parameter that describes the transition between static and flowing regimes of granular material. We define the order parameter as a fraction of static contacts among all contacts between particles. We also propose and verify by direct simulations the constitutive relation based on the splitting of the shear stress tensor into a``fluid part'' proportional to the strain rate tensor, and a remaining ``solid part''. The ratio of these two parts is a function of the order parameter. The rheology of the fluid component agrees well with the kinetic theory of granular fluids even in the dense regime. Based on the hysteretic bifurcation diagram for a thin shear granular layer obtained in simulations, we construct the ``free energy'' for the order parameter. The theory calibrated using numerical experiments with the thin granular layer is applied to the surface-driven stationary two dimensional granular flows in a thick granular layer under gravity.Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, submitted to Phys.     Acute Bacterial Meningitis in Adults – A Review of 493 Episodes

    To characterize acute bacterial meningitis in adults, we reviewed the charts of all persons 16 years of age or older in whom acute bacterial meningitis was diagnosed at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1962 through 1988. We included patients who were admitted after initial treatment at other hospitals. During the 27-year period, 445 adults were treated for 493 episodes of acute bacterial meningitis, of which 197 (40 percent) were nosocomial. Gram-negative bacilli (other than Haemophilus influenzae) caused 33 percent of the nosocomial episodes but only 3 percent of the community-acquired episodes. In the 296 episodes of community-acquired meningitis, the most common pathogens were Streptococcus pneumoniae (37 percent), Neisseria meningitidis (13 percent), and Listeria monocytogenes (10 percent); these organisms accounted for only 8 percent of the nosocomial episodes. Only 19 of the 493 episodes of meningitis (4 percent) were due to H. influenzae. Nine percent of all patients had recurrent meningitis; many had a cerebrospinal fluid leak. Seizures occurred in 23 percent of patients with community-acquired meningitis, and 28 percent had focal central nervous system findings. Risk factors for death among those with single episodes of community-acquired meningitis included older age ( ≥ 60 years), obtunded mental state on admission, and seizures within the first 24 hours. Among those with single episodes, the in-hospital mortality rate was 25 percent for community-acquired and 35 percent for nosocomial meningitis. The overall case fatality rate was 25 percent and did not vary significantly over the 27 years. In our large urban hospital, a major proportion of cases of acute bacterial meningitis in adults were nosocomial. Recurrent episodes of meningitis were frequent. The overall mortality rate remained high., Few studies of bacterial meningitis have focused on the clinical and pathologic features of the illness in adults1–5. Most large series have included both children and adults, with children accounting for 45 to 87 percent of cases6–16. Results have rarely been reported according to age group in these studies.
