    Perspectives on Time Commitment to Fundraising by Community College Presidents

    All types of higher education institutions have come to rely on some element of revenue diversification, and fundraising from private sources has become increasingly common and popular among community college presidents. Yet despite the growth in attention to fundraising, community colleges collectively only garner 2% of all philanthropic support to higher education. With the growing demand for private funds, community college presidents must understand how they are using their time for fundraising, and ultimately, the consequence of these fundraising efforts. The current study explored the time commitment of college presidents, finding that they spend as much as 30% of their workplace time each month on development related activities

    Development and modeling of thermally conductive resins for fuel cell bipolar plate applications

    Thermally conductive resins are a class of material that show promise in many different applications. One growing field for their use is in the area of bipolar plate technology for fuel cell applications. In this work, a LCP was mixed with different types of carbon fillers to determine the effects of the individual carbon fillers on the thermal conductivity of the composite resin. In addition, mathematical modeling was performed on the thermal conductivity data with the goal of developing predictive models for the thermal conductivity of highly filled composite resins

    Eisenstein series for higher-rank groups and string theory amplitudes

    Scattering amplitudes of superstring theory are strongly constrained by the requirement that they be invariant under dualities generated by discrete subgroups, E_n(Z), of simply-laced Lie groups in the E_n series (n<= 8). In particular, expanding the four-supergraviton amplitude at low energy gives a series of higher derivative corrections to Einstein's theory, with coefficients that are automorphic functions with a rich dependence on the moduli. Boundary conditions supplied by string and supergravity perturbation theory, together with a chain of relations between successive groups in the E_n series, constrain the constant terms of these coefficients in three distinct parabolic subgroups. Using this information we are able to determine the expressions for the first two higher derivative interactions (which are BPS-protected) in terms of specific Eisenstein series. Further, we determine key features of the coefficient of the third term in the low energy expansion of the four-supergraviton amplitude (which is also BPS-protected) in the E_8 case. This short paper details the history of the development of this collection by William and O'Hara Darlington and its acquisition by the University of Pittsburgh. The Darlington Collection is a very important and large collection of books, manuscripts, maps, atlases and other material related to Colonial America as well as French and English literature.     De-novo design of complementary (antisense) peptide mini-receptor inhibitor of interleukin 18 (IL-18).

    Complementary (antisense) peptide mini-receptor inhibitors are complementary peptides designed to be receptor-surrogates that act by binding to selected surface features of biologically important proteins thereby inhibiting protein-cognate receptor interactions and subsequent biological effects. Previously, we described a complementary peptide mini-receptor inhibitor of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) that was designed to bind to an external surface loop (beta-bulge) of IL-1beta (Boraschi loop) clearly identified in the X-ray crystal structure of this cytokine. Here, we report the de-novo design and rational development of a complementary peptide mini-receptor inhibitor of cytokine interleukin-18 (IL-18), a protein for which there is no known X-ray crystal structure. Using sequence homology comparisons with IL-1beta, putative IL-18 surface loops are identified and used as a starting point for design, including a loop region 1 thought to be equivalent with the Boraschi loop of IL-1beta. Only loop region 1 complementary peptides are found to be promising leads as mini-receptor inhibitors of IL-18 but these are prevented from being properly successful owing to solubility problems. The application of "M-I pair mutagenesis" and inclusion of a C-terminal arginine residue are then sufficient to solve this problem and convert one lead peptide into a functional complementary peptide mini-receptor inhibitor of IL-18. This suggests that the biophysical and biological properties of complementary peptides can be improved in a rational and logical manner where appropriate, further strengthening the potential importance of complementary peptides as inhibitors of protein-protein interactions, even when X-ray crystal structural information is not readily available

    Demographic Studies on Hawaii's Endangered Tree Snails: Partulina proxima

    Populations of the tree snail Partulina proxima, endemic to higher elevations of Molokai, Hawaiian Islands, were studied for 3 years. Analyses of the data derived from 17bimonthly mark-recapture events determined that each tree harbors a small, mostly nonmigratory population of 8-26 snails of which 2-4 are adults; the snails average 4.2 mm long at birth and 21.3 mm long when growth stops; growth is slow, with maturity reached in 5-7 years; annual fecundity averages 6.2 offspring per adult; and mortality is about 98% over the first 4 years of life. Given the high rate of juvenile mortality, adult snails must reproduce for at least 12 years to replace themselves. From this we calculate a minimum maximal life-span of 18-19 years. We conclude that the current high rate of unexplained juvenile mortality, combined with lat e age at first reproduction and low fecundity, place this species at very high risk to any sort of perturbation, particularly any selective predation on adults

    Characterization of low-noise quasi-optical SIS mixers for the submillimeter band

    We report on the development of low-noise quasi-optical SIS mixers for the frequency range 400-850 GHz. The mixers utilize twin-slot antennas, two-junction tuning circuits, and Nb-trilayer junctions. Fourier-transform spectrometry has been used to verify that the frequency response of the devices is well predicted by computer simulations. The 400-850 GHz frequency band can be covered with four separate fixed-tuned mixers. We measure uncorrected double-sideband receiver noise temperatures around 5hν/kB to 700 GHz, and better than 540 K at 808 GHz. These results are among the best reported to date for broadband heterodyne receivers
