Study of relativistic bound state wave functions in quasielastic (e,e'p) reactions
The unpolarized response functions of the quasielastic reaction are calculated for three different types of relativistic
bound state wave functions. The wave functions are obtained from relativistic
Hartree, relativistic Hartree-Fock and density dependent relativistic Hartree
calculations that reproduce the experimental charge radius of O. The
sensitivity of the unpolarized response functions to the single particle
structure of the different models is investigated in the relativistic plane
wave impulse approximation. Redistributions of the momentum dependence in the
longitudinal and transverse response function can be related to the binding
energy of the single particle states. The interference responses and
reveal a strong sensitivity to the small component of the relativistic
bound state wave function.Comment: 18 pages REVTEX, 5 figures include
The Unique Badness of Hypocritical Blame
It is widely agreed that hypocrisy can undermine one’s moral standing to blame. According to the Nonhypocrisy Condition on standing, R has the standing to blame some other agent S for a violation of some norm N only if R is not hypocritical with respect to blame for violations of N. Yet this condition is seldom argued for. Macalester Bell points out that the fact that hypocrisy is a moral fault does not yet explain why hypocritical blame is standingless blame. She raises a challenge: one must explain what is distinct about hypocritical blame such that the hypocritical blamer lacks the standing to blame, even if the arrogant or petty blamer does not. Of those writing on hypocrisy, only we offer a direct response to Bell’s challenge. Recently, however, our account has come under criticism. We argue here that (1) our account can handle these criticisms and that (2) no other rival account adequately addresses Bell’s challenge of explaining what is uniquely objectionable about hypocritical blame. Because answering Bell’s challenge is a necessary component of any plausible account of the relationship between hypocrisy and standing, our account remains the best on offer
Quantifying river form variations in the Mississippi Basin using remotely sensed imagery
Geographic variations in river shape are often estimated using the framework of downstream hydraulic geometry (DHG), which links spatial changes in discharge and channel width, depth, and velocity through power-law models. Because these empirical relationships are derived from in situ data and may not describe all variability in channel form, we create a dataset of 1.2x10^6 river widths in the Mississippi Basin measured from remotely sensed imagery. We construct DHG for the Mississippi drainage by linking DEM-estimated discharge values to each width measurement. Well-developed DHG exists over the entire Mississippi basin, while individual sub-basins vary substantially from existing width-discharge scaling. Comparison of depth predictions from traditional depth-discharge relationships with one incorporating width into the DHG framework shows that including width improves depth estimates in basins with high width variability. Results suggest that channel geometry derived from remotely sensed imagery better characterizes variability in river form than the assumptions of DHG.Master of Scienc
The broad iron Kalpha line of Cygnus X-1 as seen by XMM-Newton in the EPIC-pn modified timing mode
We present the analysis of the broadened, flourescent iron Kalpha line in
simultaneous XMM-Newton and RXTE data from the black hole Cygnus X-1. The
XMM-Newton data were taken in a modified version of the timing mode of the
EPIC-pn camera. In this mode the lower energy threshold of the instrument is
increased to 2.8 keV to avoid telemetry drop outs due to the brightness of the
source, while at the same time preserving the signal-to-noise ratio in the Fe
Kalpha band. We find that the best-fit spectrum consists of the sum of an
exponentially cut off power-law and relativistically smeared, ionized
reflection. The shape of the broadened Fe Kalpha feature is due to strong
Compton broadening combined with relativistic broadening. Assuming a standard,
thin accretion disk, the black hole is close to rotating maximally.Comment: Astron. Astrophys., in pres

[C5(SMe)5]Mn(CO)3 (1) reacts with W(CO)5(THF), Mo(CO)4(C7H8), Cr(CO)3(NCMe)3, and Re(CO)4(-C3H5)/HBF4 to yield the monochelate complexes [[C5(SMe)5]Mn(C0)3][M(CO)4] (M = W: 2; M = Mo: 3) and the dichelate complexes [[C5(SMe)5]Mn(CO)3][M(C0)4]2 (M = W: 4; M = Cr: 5; M = Re BFF4 : 6). The reaction with Mo(CO)3(p-xylene) in THF leads via unstable intermediates, which contain coordinated THF, to a mixture of 3 and [[C5(SMe)5]Mn(CO)3][Mo(CO)4]2 (7). The structures of 3 and 4 in the crystal have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods
