    Impact of Vegetative Treatment Systems on Multiple Measures of Antibiotic Resistance in Agricultural Wastewater

    Wastewater is an important vector of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARB/G). While there is broad agreement that ARB/G from agricultural (ag) wastewaters can be transported through the environment and may contribute to untreatable infectious disease in humans and animals, there remain large knowledge gaps surrounding applied details on the types and amounts of ARB/G associated with different agricultural wastewater treatment options and different ag production systems. This study evaluates a vegetative treatment system (VTS) built to treat the wastewater from a beef cattle feedlot. Samples were collected for three years, and plated on multiple media types to enumerate tetracycline and cefotaxime-resistant bacteria. Enterobacteriaceae isolates (n = 822) were characterized for carriage of tetracycline resistance genes, and E. coli isolates (n = 673) were phenotyped to determine multi-drug resistance (MDR) profiles. Tetracycline resistance in feedlot runoff wastewater was 2-to-3 orders of magnitude higher compared to rainfall runoff from the VTS fields, indicating efficacy of the VTA for reducing ARB over time following wastewater application. Clear differences in MDR profiles were observed based on the specific media on which a sample was plated. This result highlights the importance of method, especially in the context of isolate-based surveillance and monitoring of ARB in agricultural wastewaters

    Finite Fatigue Life Prediction of Additively Manufactured Aircraft Engine Turbine Blade with Respect to Internal Defect Size and Location

    Current fatigue life modeling techniques with respect to defects emphasize the dependence on the defect size with respect to fatigue life, but does not account for the effects of where a defect might be located. This research outlines a process to include defect location into the model analysis for a more precise prediction of the number of cycles to failure and where the finial failure could occur within a component. The focus is on a turbine blade structure using IN718 subjected to a pure vibratory load. The basic model predicts component life using a stress map from the frequency analysis of the developed Finite Element Model (FEM) and synthetically generated defect sizes and location. Test specimen printed in IN718 are used to create experimental data to validate the model parameters, defect distributions, and predictions. The proposed results will be a map denoting the critical locations that may cause failure and predictions of fatigue life when both defect size and location are taken into consideration

    Vibrational Analysis of a 12U Chassis

    The objective of this research is to characterize how the natural frequencies of AFIT’s CubeSat design can be controlled to meet launch vehicle requirements while increasing the internal and external volume available for payload and bus components as the chassis increases in size. A reliable Finite Element (FE) model is created and validated using NASA’s General Environmental Verification Standards (GEVS) vibrational test on the 12U chassis. The validated FE model proves that current boundary conditions and geometric properties with minimized chassis wall thicknesses to maximize usable internal and external volume maintain a first frequency of the fully loaded 12U chassis above 70 Hz. However, the constraints on the 1U mass stacks aren’t sufficient to prevent structural failure of the mass stacks, and internal supports are necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the mass stacks

    Break in the VHE spectrum of PG 1553+113: new upper limit on its redshift?

    PG 1553+113 is a known BL Lac object, newly detected in the GeV-TeV energy range by H.E.S.S and MAGIC. The redshift of this source is unknown and a lower limit of z>0.09z > 0.09 was recently estimated. The very high energy (VHE) spectrum of PG 1553+113 is attenuated due to the absorption by the low energy photon field of the extragalactic background light (EBL). Here we correct the combined H.E.S.S and MAGIC spectrum of PG 1553+113 for this absorption assuming a minimum density of the evolving EBL. We use an argument that the intrinsic photon index cannot be harder than Γ=1.5\Gamma = 1.5 and derive an upper limit on the redshift of z<0.69z < 0.69. Moreover, we find that a redshift above z=0.42z = 0.42 implies a possible break of the intrinsic spectrum at about 200 GeV. Assuming that such a break is absent, we derive a much stronger upper limit of z<0.42z < 0.42. Alternatively, this break might be attributed to an additional emission component in the jet of PG 1553+113. This would be the first evidence for a second component is detected in the VHE spectrum of a blazar.Comment: revised version submitted to Ap

    The Role of Projection in the Control of Bird Flocks

    Swarming is a conspicuous behavioural trait observed in bird flocks, fish shoals, insect swarms and mammal herds. It is thought to improve collective awareness and offer protection from predators. Many current models involve the hypothesis that information coordinating motion is exchanged between neighbors. We argue that such local interactions alone are insufficient to explain the organization of large flocks of birds and that the mechanism for the exchange of long-ranged information necessary to control their density remains unknown. We show that large flocks self-organize to the maximum density at which a typical individual is still just able to see out of the flock in many directions. Such flocks are marginally opaque - an external observer can also just still see a substantial fraction of sky through the flock. Although seemingly intuitive we show that this need not be the case; flocks could easily be highly diffuse or entirely opaque. The emergence of marginal opacity strongly constrains how individuals interact with each other within large swarms. It also provides a mechanism for global interactions: An individual can respond to the projection of the flock that it sees. This provides for faster information transfer and hence rapid flock dynamics, another advantage over local models.     An Investigation of Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia After Isometric and Cardiovascular Exercise

    Exercise-induced hypoalgesia is a well-established phenomenon in the literature. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this augmentation of pain perception are not completely understood. The specific mode and intensity of exercise that creates hypoalgesia remains equivocal. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify if any differences existed in the exercise-induced hypoalgesia of isometric gripping exercise (IGE) and treadmill exercise (TE). A repeated measures design was used to determine the differences in pain threshold between acute exposure to IGE and TE. Twelve healthy male volunteers served as our subjects. Subjects were tested on three different days under three different conditions (rest, IGE, TE). The order of the trials was randomized and applied force (AF) was used as the dependent variable. Applied force pain threshold (AFPT) was determined by a handheld dolorimeter used to apply progressive force and pain to the skin and muscles of the wrist flexors before and after exercise. Exercise induced hypoalgesia was found in both exercise conditions by comparing resting PPT values (6.23 ± 2.04) to those measured immediately after IGE (7.24 ± 1.61; p = 0.0058) or TE (8.03 ± 2.03; p = 0.0001). However, TE produced a larger (22.04 %) hypoanalgesic effect in comparison to isometric exercise (14.14 %). Both TE and IGE may have potential as methods of increasing one’s pressure pain threshold. Further investigation into the specific causes of exercise-induced hypoalgesia is warranted

    Cloning of the cellular receptor for amphotropic murine retroviruses reveals homology to that for gibbon ape leukemia virus

    The host and tissue specificity of retrovirus infection is largely determined by specific cellular receptors that mediate virus entry. Genes encoding these receptors are widely distributed in the genome, and the receptors identified to date show no sequence similarity. We have identified the cellular receptor for amphotropic murine retroviruses, Ram-1, by screening a rat cDNA expression library introduced into amphotropic virus-resistant hamster cells. The 656-amino acid receptor is homologous to the gibbon ape leukemia virus receptor at both hydrophobic termini but is highly divergent in the central hydrophilic region. Both receptors appear to be integral membrane proteins having multiple membrane-spanning regions. Identification of this family of receptors will help define the evolutionary relationship between retroviruses and their cellular receptors

    The Unique Badness of Hypocritical Blame

    It is widely agreed that hypocrisy can undermine one’s moral standing to blame. According to the Nonhypocrisy Condition on standing, R has the standing to blame some other agent S for a violation of some norm N only if R is not hypocritical with respect to blame for violations of N. Yet this condition is seldom argued for. Macalester Bell points out that the fact that hypocrisy is a moral fault does not yet explain why hypocritical blame is standingless blame. She raises a challenge: one must explain what is distinct about hypocritical blame such that the hypocritical blamer lacks the standing to blame, even if the arrogant or petty blamer does not. Of those writing on hypocrisy, only we offer a direct response to Bell’s challenge. Recently, however, our account has come under criticism. We argue here that (1) our account can handle these criticisms and that (2) no other rival account adequately addresses Bell’s challenge of explaining what is uniquely objectionable about hypocritical blame. Because answering Bell’s challenge is a necessary component of any plausible account of the relationship between hypocrisy and standing, our account remains the best on offer
