The Stress Transmission Universality Classes of Periodic Granular Arrays
The transmission of stress is analysed for static periodic arrays of rigid
grains, with perfect and zero friction. For minimal coordination number (which
is sensitive to friction, sphericity and dimensionality), the stress
distribution is soluble without reference to the corresponding displacement
fields. In non-degenerate cases, the constitutive equations are found to be
simple linear in the stress components. The corresponding coefficients depend
crucially upon geometrical disorder of the grain contacts.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Magnetoresistance of Two-Dimensional Fermions in a Random Magnetic Field
We perform a semiclassical calculation of the magnetoresistance of spinless
two-dimensional fermions in a long-range correlated random magnetic field. In
the regime relevant for the problem of the half filled Landau level the
perturbative Born approximation fails and we develop a new method of solving
the Boltzmann equation beyond the relaxation time approximation. In absence of
interactions, electron density modulations, in-plane fields, and Fermi surface
anisotropy we obtain a quadratic negative magnetoresistance in the weak field

An Update of the Mayo Clinic Cohort of Patients with Adult Primary Central Nervous System Vasculitis
Primary central nervous system vasculitis (PCNSV) is an uncommon condition in which lesions are limited to vessels of the brain and spinal cord. Because the clinical manifestations are not specific, the diagnosis is often difficult, and permanent disability and death are frequent outcomes. This study is based on a cohort of 163 consecutive patients with PCNSV who were examined at the Mayo Clinic over a 29-year period from 1983 to 2011. The aim of the study was to define the characteristics of these patients, which represents the largest series in adults reported to date. A total of 105 patients were diagnosed by angiographic findings and 58 by biopsy results. The patients diagnosed by biopsy more frequently had at presentation cognitive dysfunction, greater cerebrospinal fluid total protein concentrations, less frequent cerebral infarcts, and more frequent leptomeningeal gadolinium-enhanced lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), along with less mortality and disability at last follow-up. The patients diagnosed by angiograms more frequently had at presentation hemiparesis or a persistent neurologic deficit or stroke, more frequent infarcts on MRI and an increased mortality. These differences were mainly related to the different size of the vessels involved in the 2 groups. Although most patients responded to therapy with glucocorticoids alone or in conjunction with cyclophosphamide and tended to improve during the follow-up period, an overall increased mortality rate was observed. Relapses occurred in one-quarter of the patients and were less frequent in patients treated with prednisone and cyclophosphamide compared with those treated with prednisone alone. The mortality rate and degree of disability at last follow-up were greater in those with increasing age, cerebral infarctions on MRI, angiographic large vessel involvement, and diagnosis made by angiography alone, but were lower in those with gadolinium-enhanced lesions on MRI and in those with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. The annual incidence rate of PCNSV was estimated at 2.4 cases per 1,000,000 person-years. PCNSV appears to consist of several subsets defined by the size of the vessels involved, the clinical characteristics at presentation, MRI findings, and histopathological patterns on biopsy. Ferromagnetism in Oriented Graphite Samples
We have studied the magnetization of various, well characterized samples of
highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG), Kish graphite and natural graphite
to investigate the recently reported ferromagnetic-like signal and its possible
relation to ferromagnetic impurities. The magnetization results obtained for
HOPG samples for applied fields parallel to the graphene layers - to minimize
the diamagnetic background - show no correlation with the magnetic impurity
concentration. Our overall results suggest an intrinsic origin for the
ferromagnetism found in graphite. We discuss possible origins of the
ferromagnetic signal.Comment: 11 figure
How spiking neurons give rise to a temporal-feature map
A temporal-feature map is a topographic neuronal representation of temporal attributes of phenomena or objects that occur in the outside world. We explain the evolution of such maps by means of a spike-based Hebbian learning rule in conjunction with a presynaptically unspecific contribution in that, if a synapse changes, then all other synapses connected to the same axon change by a small fraction as well. The learning equation is solved for the case of an array of Poisson neurons. We discuss the evolution of a temporal-feature map and the synchronization of the single cellsâ synaptic structures, in dependence upon the strength of presynaptic unspecific learning. We also give an upper bound for the magnitude of the presynaptic interaction by estimating its impact on the noise level of synaptic growth. Finally, we compare the results with those obtained from a learning equation for nonlinear neurons and show that synaptic structure formation may profit
from the nonlinearity
Around the tangent cone theorem
A cornerstone of the theory of cohomology jump loci is the Tangent Cone
theorem, which relates the behavior around the origin of the characteristic and
resonance varieties of a space. We revisit this theorem, in both the algebraic
setting provided by cdga models, and in the topological setting provided by
fundamental groups and cohomology rings. The general theory is illustrated with
several classes of examples from geometry and topology: smooth quasi-projective
varieties, complex hyperplane arrangements and their Milnor fibers,

Educational change in Scotland: Policy, context and biography
The poor success rate of policy for curriculum change has been widely noted in the educational change literature. Part of the problem lies in the complexity of schools, as policymakers have proven unable to micromanage the multifarious range of factors that impact upon the implementation of policy. This paper draws upon empirical data from a local authority-led initiative to implement Scotland’s new national curriculum. It offers a set of conceptual tools derived from critical realism (particularly the work of Margaret Archer), which offer significant potential in allowing us to develop greater understanding of the complexities of educational change. Archer’s social theory developed as a means of explaining change and continuity in social settings. As schools and other educational institutions are complex social organisations, critical realism offers us epistemological tools for tracking the ebbs and flows of change cycles over time, presenting the means for mapping the multifarious networks and assemblages that form their basis
High-statistics measurement of the pion form factor in the rho-meson energy range with the CMD-2 detector
We present a measurement of the pion form factor based on e+e- annihilation
data from the CMD-2 detector in the energy range 0.6<sqrt(s)<1.0 GeV with a
systematic uncertainty of 0.8%. A data sample is five times larger than that

Hidden degree of freedom and critical states in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a random magnetic field
We establish the existence of a hidden degree of freedom and the critical
states of a spinless electron system in a spatially-correlated random magnetic
field with vanishing mean. Whereas the critical states are carried by the
zero-field contours of the field landscape, the hidden degree of freedom is
recognized as being associated with the formation of vortices in these special
contours. It is argued that, as opposed to the coherent backscattering
mechanism of weak localization, a new type of scattering processes in the
contours controls the underlying physics of localization in the random magnetic
field system. In addition, we investigate the role of vortices in governing the
metal-insulator transition and propose a renormalization-group diagram for the

Study of KS KL Coupled Decays and KL -Be Interactions with the CMD-2 Detector at VEPP-2M Collider
The integrated luminosity about 4000 inverse nanobarn of around phi meson
mass ( 5 millions of phi mesons) has been collected with the CMD-2 detector at
the VEPP-2M collider. A latest analysis of the KS KL coupled decays based on 30
% of available data is presented in this paper.
The KS KL pairs from phi meson decays were reconstructed in the drift chamber
when both kaons decayed into two charged particles. From a sample of 1423
coupled decays a selection of candidates to the CP violating KL into pi+ pi-
decay was performed. CP violating decays were not identified because of the
domination of events with a KL regenerating at the Be beam pipe into KS and a
background from KL semileptonic decays.
The regeneration cross section of 110 MeV/c KL mesons was found to be 53 +-
17 mb in agreement with theoretical expectations. The angular distribution of
KS mesons after regeneration and the total cross section of KL for Be have been
