    Jordanian Ethical Perceptions of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

    Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure that can be done during In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), involving genetic and chromosomal screening of fertilized embryos prior to implantation into a woman’s uterus. After PGD, only the embryos possessing the desired characteristics are implanted, while the other embryos are frozen for future use, or discarded. PGD is used for family balancing (gender selection for balancing the gender dynamic within a family), gender selection to screen out sex-linked diseases, or a broader genetic screening for diseases known to be present in the patient’s family history. Many ethical questions have been raised about PGD, especially in its use for family balancing. The root of ethical views may be linked to culture, religion, or social tradition. It is the goal of this research to understand the ethical views of Jordanian medical professionals involved in PGD regarding the practice through in-depth interviews, and to explore the opinions of the general public regarding PGD in order to gain a broader understanding of Jordanian ethical perceptions behind PGD. Do medical professionals see PGD as ethical? What is the spectrum of this? Do young adults have opinions about family balancing, genetic screening, and their legality? These answers are needed to further understand ethics of PGD, where they are derived from, and what the future of the procedures may look like. The findings of this study highlight the complexity behind the roots and ethics of PGD. The significance of this study lies in its analysis of opinions in Jordan, a country without legal restrictions of PGD. Because many countries do not consider some, if not all, aspects of PGD legal, it is necessary to understand the perceptions of those who are working and living in Jordan. Only by further understanding the root ethics behind beliefs regarding PGD will analysis of issues be possible

    Exploring heritage through time and space : Supporting community reflection on the highland clearances

    On the two hundredth anniversary of the Kildonan clearances, when people were forcibly removed from their homes, the Timespan Heritage centre has created a program of community centred work aimed at challenging pre conceptions and encouraging reflection on this important historical process. This paper explores the innovative ways in which virtual world technology has facilitated community engagement, enhanced visualisation and encouraged reflection as part of this program. An installation where users navigate through a reconstruction of pre clearance Caen township is controlled through natural gestures and presented on a 300 inch six megapixel screen. This environment allows users to experience the past in new ways. The platform has value as an effective way for an educator, artist or hobbyist to create large scale virtual environments using off the shelf hardware and open source software. The result is an exhibit that also serves as a platform for experimentation into innovative ways of community co-creation and co-curation.Postprin

    Kpc-scale Properties of Emission-line Galaxies

    We perform a detailed study of the resolved properties of emission-line galaxies at kpc-scale to investigate how small-scale and global properties of galaxies are related. 119 galaxies with high-resolution Keck/DEIMOS spectra are selected to cover a wide range in morphologies over the redshift range 0.2<z<1.3. Using the HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 imaging data taken as a part of the CANDELS project, for each galaxy we perform SED fitting per resolution element, producing resolved rest-frame U-V color, stellar mass, star formation rate, age and extinction maps. We develop a technique to identify blue and red "regions" within individual galaxies, using their rest-frame color maps. As expected, for any given galaxy, the red regions are found to have higher stellar mass surface densities and older ages compared to the blue regions. Furthermore, we quantify the spatial distribution of red and blue regions with respect to both redshift and stellar mass, finding that the stronger concentration of red regions toward the centers of galaxies is not a significant function of either redshift or stellar mass. We find that the "main sequence" of star forming galaxies exists among both red and blue regions inside galaxies, with the median of blue regions forming a tighter relation with a slope of 1.1+/-0.1 and a scatter of ~0.2 dex compared to red regions with a slope of 1.3+/-0.1 and a scatter of ~0.6 dex. The blue regions show higher specific Star Formation Rates (sSFR) than their red counterparts with the sSFR decreasing since z~1, driver primarily by the stellar mass surface densities rather than the SFRs at a giver resolution element.Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, Submitted to the Ap

    Learnersourcing Subgoal Labels for How-to Videos

    Websites like YouTube host millions of how-to videos, but the interfaces are not optimized for learning. Previous research suggests that users learn more from how-to videos when the information from the video is presented in outline form, with individual steps and labels for groups of steps (subgoals) shown. We envision an alternative video player where the steps and subgoals are displayed alongside the video. To generate this information for existing videos, we propose a learnersourcing approach, where people actively learning from a video provide such information. To demonstrate this method, we created a workflow where learners contribute and refine subgoal labels for how-to videos. We deployed a live website with our workflow implemented on a set of introductory web programming videos. For the four videos with the highest participation, we found that a majority of learner-generated subgoals were comparable in quality to expert-generated ones. Learners commented that the system helped them grasp the material, suggesting that our workflow did not detract from the learning experience.Massachusetts Institute of Technology.     Lessons learned: a pilot study on occupational therapy effectiveness for children with sensory modulation disorder.

    OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot study was to prepare for a randomized controlled study of the effectiveness of occupational therapy using a sensory integration approach (OT-SI) with children who have sensory processing disorders (SPD). METHOD: A one-group pretest, posttest design with 30 children was completed with a subset of children with SPD, those with sensory modulation disorder. RESULTS: Lessons learned relate to (a) identifying a homogeneous sample with quantifiable inclusion criteria, (b) developing an intervention manual for study replication and a fidelity to treatment measure, (c) determining which outcomes are sensitive to change and relate to parents\u27 priorities, and (d) clarifying rigorous methodologies (e.g., blinded examiners, randomization, power). CONCLUSION: A comprehensive program of research is needed, including multiple pilot studies to develop enough knowledge that high-quality effectiveness research in occupational therapy can be completed.     Creep in Photovoltaic Modules: Examining the Stability of Polymeric Materials and Components

    Interest in renewable energy has motivated the implementation of new polymeric materials in photovoltaic modules. Some of these are non-cross-linked thermoplastics, in which there is a potential for new behaviors to occur, including phase transformation and visco-elastic flow. Differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry data were obtained and then combined with existing site-specific time-temperature information in a theoretical analysis to estimate the displacement expected to occur during module service life. The analysis identified that, depending on the installation location, module configuration and/or mounting configuration, some of the thermoplastics are expected to undergo unacceptable physical displacement. While the examples here focus on encapsulation materials, the concerns apply equally to the frame, junction-box, and mounting-adhesive technologies

    Long Noncoding RNA Moderates MicroRNA Activity to Maintain Self-Renewal in Embryonic Stem Cells

    Of the thousands of long noncoding RNAs expressed in embryonic stem cells (ESCs), few have known roles and fewer have been functionally implicated in the regulation of self-renewal and pluripotency, or the reprogramming of somatic cells to the pluripotent state. In ESCs, Cyrano is a stably expressed long intergenic noncoding RNA with no previously assigned role. We demonstrate that Cyrano contributes to ESC maintenance, as its depletion results in the loss of hallmarks of self-renewal. Delineation of Cyrano's network through transcriptomics revealed widespread effects on signaling pathways and gene expression networks that contribute to ESC maintenance. Cyrano shares unique sequence complementarity with the differentiation-associated microRNA, mir-7, and mir-7 overexpression reduces expression of a key self-renewal factor to a similar extent as Cyrano knockdown. This suggests that Cyrano functions to restrain the action of mir-7. Altogether, we provide a view into the multifaceted function of Cyrano in ESC maintenance

    The impact of service dogs on objective and perceived sleep quality for veterans with PTSD

    One in four post-9/11 veterans (Fulton et al., 2015) have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), facing sleep disruptions as one of their most common symptoms. Service dogs have become an increasingly popular complementary intervention and anecdotes suggest they may impact sleep for veterans with PTSD. There is a need for empirical investigation into these claims through measurement and analysis of sleep quality. The purpose of this study was to longitudinally investigate the impact of service dogs on sleep quality through both objective and subjective measures. Participants in the treatment group (n=92) received a service dog after baseline, while those in the control group (n=76) received usual care alone for the duration of the study. Actigraphy (objective) and survey (subjective) data were collected longitudinally (at 0 and 3 months). Descriptive statistical tests and regression analyses were performed while controlling for baseline and demographic characteristics to compare sleep outcomes for the treatment versus control groups. Results indicated that service dog placement was significantly associated with better perceived sleep quality (overall: B=-0.12, p\u3c0.05; fear of sleep: B=-0.33, p\u3c0.001; sleep disturbance: B=- 0.45, p\u3c0.01). In contrast, no significant differences in objective sleep measures were observed (duration: B=-0.09, p=0.52; regularity: B\u3c0.01, p\u3e0.99; efficiency: B=-0.10, p=0.54). These findings suggest that while service dogs may be associated with better perceived sleep quality for veterans with PTSD, these improvements do not appear to be motion related (Actigraphy). Instead, they may be related to differences in other sleep quality determinants such as nightmares and general fear of falling asleep

    A novel scanning lens instrument for evaluating Fresnel lens performance: equipment development and initial results

    A system dedicated to the optical transmittance characterization of Fresnel lenses has been developed at NREL, in collaboration with the UPM. The system quantifies the optical efficiency of the lens by generating a performance map. The shape of the focused spot may also be analyzed to understand change in the lens performance. The primary instrument components (lasers and CCD detector) have been characterized to confirm their capability for performing optical transmittance measurements. Measurements performed on SoG and PMMA lenses subject to a variety of indoor conditions (e.g., UV and damp heat) identified differences in the optical efficiency of the evaluated lenses, demonstrating the ability of the Scanning Lens Instrument (SLI) to distinguish between the aged lenses
