Exploitation of Quantitative Methods for the Assessment of Regional Performance of the Slovak Economy

    Get PDF
AbstractRegional disparities in the EU regions have lately managed to become the interest of professional and lay public. Since 1989 the Slovak Economy has undergone the transformation process from centrally planned economy to market-oriented economy. Before 1989 Czechoslovakia belonged to the countries with the most reduced regional differences. However, this state lasted only based on the loss of competitiveness of subjects from the most developed country regions from the point of view of history. After 1989 there was the decrease of induced efforts for balancing the disparities to analogous differences at the level or regions. The article deals with the regional analysis of GDP at the level of Slovak regions (NUTS 3) by the means of quantitative methods. Its aim is to refer to possible solutions for ceasing the deepening of regional disparities and fulfilment of the aim of convergence criteria not only in the conditions of Slovakia but also in other regions of EU

The aim of this study is to identify plant lice Cacopsylla pulchella as a new alien insect in the fauna of Albania. In order to assess the potential of this insect as a pest causing damages on trees, infestation level assessment was used. In the first decade of June 2020 samples were collected at three locations in Albania, where Cercis siliquastrum is grown. Samples were collected and brought to the laboratory for further analysis. Field research was performed to assess distribution and infestation intensity across various localities. The intensity of infestation was assessed by visual examination and was categorized according to previously determined categories. C. pulchella was confirmed on C. siliquastrum in three localities in Albania. Most of the infested trees had a moderate or high intensity of infestation. Compared to the results of other countries, it seems that the Judas trees are under heavy attack in Albania. Librazhd and Elbansn districts had the highest recorded infestation level. Infested trees found in this study should be inspected in the following years and this alien insect should be further monitored in order to estimate its potential of becoming an invasive pest in this country

The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of stage of lactation on daily milk yield, and milk fat and protein content in Tsigai and Improved Valachian ewes. Breed lactation curves for daily milk yield, and milk fat and protein content were modelled as a sub-model of the three-trait animal model based on repeated test-day records that were collected by the Breeding Services of the Slovak Republic between 1995 and 2010. Data included 188403 (Tsigai) and 352094 (Improved Valachian) ewe’s performance records. Pedigree file included 35484 (Tsigai) and 66994 (Improved Valachian) animals with genetic ties to ewes with milk performance data. The fixed part of the model included parity, litter size and stage of lactation. The effect of days in milk (i.e. stage of lactation) was fitted using Ali and Schaeffer lactation curve. The random part of the model included flock-test day effect, direct additive genetic effect, and permanent environmental effect of ewe nested within lactation. Due to limited number of test-day records in the first and the eighth month of lactation and related difficulties in modelling milk traits in these phases of lactation, the lactation curves were plotted between days 30 and 210. During lactation period the daily milk yield curves were decreasing, while milk fat and protein content were increasing. Because of higher changes at the beginning of lactation balanced with higher changes at the end of lactation in Tsigai and smaller changes at the beginning of lactation balanced with smaller changes at the end of lactation in Improved Valachian, 150d milk yield and average milk fat and protein content were almost the same in both breeds.

A Novel Approach to Assess the Influence of Rockfall Source Areas: The Case Study of Bardonecchia (Italy)

    Get PDF
In this research article, we propose a practical methodology for evaluating the affecting potential of detachment areas in rockfalls. Our innovative approach combines an assessment of the visibility of rockfall source areas, with reference to specific rockfall scenarios and elements at risk, considering the rockfall Susceptibility Index to Failure (SIF) of these areas. The result is the characterization of source areas through a rockfall Source Affecting Index (SAI), which considers both the morphology of the slope and the geostructural conditions of the rock walls. This information can be very useful since it aids in optimizing more in-depth analyses, as well as the placement of monitoring instruments or stabilization systems. The proposed methodology has been implemented in the open-source software QGIS through the development of an easy-to-use plugin named Ranking of the Affecting Potential of Detachment Areas in Rockfalls, or “RADAR”. RADAR is designed to be used in conjunction with QPROTO, a well-known QGIS plugin for preliminary rockfall susceptibility/hazard analyses based on a visibility analysis and a simplified mechanical method. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an application to a case study located in the Western Alps (Bardonecchia, Italy) is presented and discussed in the paper

A Quick QGIS-Based Procedure to Preliminarily Define Time-Independent Rockfall Risk: The Case Study of Sorba Valley, Italy

    Get PDF
Rockfalls are widespread, rapid, and high-energy landslide phenomena that could poten- tially affect large portions of populated lands. The preliminary identification of the most rockfall- prone zones is a challenging task, especially in times of extreme and unpredictable climate change. Even slight environmental modifications can produce significant consequences in terms of exposure, hazard, and risk. Therefore, a timely risk assessment is paramount for territorial administrators to plan and prioritize adequate countermeasures. Risk assessment is crucial to guaranteeing the safety of human lives, the integrity of structures and infrastructures, the preservation of historic and environmental heritage, and the safeguard of economic activities. Hence, new and rapid evaluation methods for rockfall hazard, vulnerability, and risk are needed to identify the most critical areas where more indepth analyses aimed at the design of protective works should be carried out. This study proposes a quick, innovative, and completely GIS-based procedure to preliminarily assess rockfall time-independent hazard and risk in large areas. Propagation analysis is performed by integrating powerful QGIS plugin QPROTO, which can estimate rockfall energy within the invasion area in a simplified way, with the slope units polygons of the Italian territory for the definition of the input parameters. The quantification of risk was obtained by the application of the multidisciplinary IMIRILAND methodology, again within a free and open QGIS environment. Lastly, to test the capabilities of the method, the procedure was applied to a case study of the Sorba Valley (Piemonte, Italy), a tourist region in the northwestern Italian Alps. The findings offer an important contribution to the field of land-planning activities and risk-management strategies

DOI: 10.15414/afz.2015.18.04.79–82Received 28. August 2015 ǀ Accepted 9. October 2015 ǀ Available online 7. December 2015Milk thistle is annual to biennial medicinal plant from the Asteraceae family. Polyfactorial field experiment was establishedand investigated during the vegetation period of the years 2012–2014. The trial was arranged in one independent block.Plant material variety Silyb was harvested in the ontogenetic stage the achenes ripening. Three evaluated factors were asfollows: crop residues – intercrop – fertilization. Milk thistle was integrated to four crop rotation design with following orderof crops: common pea – winter wheat – milk thistle – maize. Average yield of milk thistle achenes significantly differ in therange from 479.6 kg ha-1 in 2012 up to 602.5 kg ha-1 in 2013. The highest yield of milk thistle was measured 745.0 kg ha-1(2013 treatment: no crop residues, with intercrop, with fertilization). The impact of growing year on yield milk thistle achenesconfirmed the high variability of yields. On output of yield milk thistle achenes we were confirmed highly significant effectof year and fertilization, and inconclusive impact of sowing intercrop and ploughing crop residues. In all evaluated years, significantly 20% higher average yield for treatments with mineral fertilization was confirmed. Based on the three-yearresults, it is recommended to continue the research of the production parameters of milk thistle yields in following growingseasons with focus to better used of yield potential of milk thistle in Slovak conditions. Keywords: Silybum marianum L., yield, intercrop, fertilization, crop residuesReferencesANDRZEJEWSKA, J., SADOWSKA, K. and MIELCAREK, S.
