On the Fermionic Frequencies of Circular Strings

We revisit the semiclassical computation of the fluctuation spectrum around different circular string solutions in AdS_5xS^5 and AdS_4xCP^3, starting from the Green-Schwarz action. It has been known that the results for these frequencies obtained from the algebraic curve and from the worldsheet computations sometimes do not agree. In particular, different methods give different results for the half-integer shifts in the mode numbers of the frequencies. We find that these discrepancies can be removed if one carefully takes into account the transition matrices in the spin bundle over the target space.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

Activity of the right cardiac ventricle and metabolism in healthy persons during an orthostatic test after short term immobilization

    Get PDF
A 15 minute orthostatic test was performed on healthy male volunteers under conditions of catheterization of the right ventricle of the heart and the radial (or brachial) artery before and after 5 day bedrest in an antiorthostatic position of the body (with the foot of the bed raised 4.5 degrees). The change to a vertical position after immobilization was attended by a more marked increase in the rate of cardiac contractions, an increase of max dp/dt pressure in the right ventricle, and a decrease of cardiac and stroke indices. The decrease of the cardiac index was compensated for, to a certain measure, by a further increase in the extraction and utilization of O2 by the tissues. The arterial blood pH did not change essentially, while the decrease in pCO2 and content of standard bicarbonate was more marked

Exact computation of one-loop correction to energy of pulsating strings in AdS_5 x S^5

In the present paper, which is a sequel to arXiv:1001:4018, we compute the one-loop correction to the energy of pulsating string solutions in AdS_5 x S^5. We show that, as for rigid spinning string elliptic solutions, the fluctuation operators for pulsating solutions can be also put into the single-gap Lame' form. A novel aspect of pulsating solutions is that the one-loop correction to their energy is expressed in terms of the stability angles of the quadratic fluctuation operators. We explicitly study the "short string" limit of the corresponding one-loop energies, demonstrating a certain universality of the form of the energy of "small" semiclassical strings. Our results may help to shed light on the structure of strong-coupling expansion of anomalous dimensions of dual gauge theory operators.Comment: 49 pages; v2: appendix F and note about antiperiodic fermions added, typos corrected, references adde

Flexible Printed Circuit Board as Novel Electrodes for Acoustofluidic Devices

    Get PDF
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) based acoustofluidics shows broad applications in biomedicine and chemistry. Conventional manufacturing process for SAW devices uses photolithography and metal deposition, thus requires accessing cleanroom facilities. This study presents an efficient and versatile technique based on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) for developing SAW acoustofluidic devices. By mechanically clamping interdigital electrodes (IDEs) made on the FPCB onto a piezoelectric substrate, SAWs can be effectively generated with an additional matching network. The SAW amplitudes was measured by a laser vibrometer, which increases with the applied input voltage. The FPCB-SAW device has been applied to actuate 10-m microspheres to form strong streaming vortices inside a droplet, and to drive a sessile droplet for transportation on the substrate surface. The use of the FPCB rather than a rigid PCB can help cut down on the overall footprint of the device and save space. The low requirement in assembling the FPCB-SAW device can facilitate versatile acoustofluidic applications by providing fast prototyping devices. This work was supported in part by the Natural Science Basic Research Program of Shaanxi Province (2020JQ-233), Fundamental Scientific Research of Central Universities (3102017OQD116), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council fellowship (EP/P002803/1 and EP/P018998/1), Global Challenges Research Fund, and the Royal Society (IEC/NSFC/170142, IE161019)

Stevioside prevents oxidative stress in wheat seedlings

© 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. This is the first study on the effect of stevioside, a diterpene glycoside that is a new promising plant growth regulator, on the antioxidant and photosynthetic systems of seedlings of the winter wheat cultivar Kazanskaya 560. Stevioside has been demonstrated to cause a decrease in the malondialdehyde formation rate, an increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase), and the accumulation of proline and carotenoids. Apparently, this integrated effect of stevioside can prevent oxidative stress caused by adverse environmental factors in plants

Electrochemical ortho functionalization of 2-phenylpyridine with perfluorocarboxylic acids catalyzed by palladium in higher oxidation states

    Get PDF
The electochemical oxidation of palladium acetate or palladium perfluoroacetate in the presence of 2-phenylpyridine promotes catalytic ortho C-H substitution reactions. As possible intermediates, Pd(II) metallacycles with Pd-bound acetate, perfluoroacetate, and perfluoroheptanoate substituents have been isolated and characterized: binuclear [(PhPy)Pd(μ-OAc)]2 and [(PhPy)Pd(μ-TFA)]2 and mononuclear [(PhPy)Pd(TFA)](CH 3CN), [(PhPy)Pd(TFA)](PhPy), and [(PhPy)Pd(PFH)](PhPy). The fluorinated derivatives were found to exist in solvent-dependent equilibria between mononuclear and binuclear forms. Cyclic voltammetry was used to elucidate redox properties of the palladacycles and the oxidation route to the final products. © 2013 American Chemical Society

Change of approach to using intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation in combined cardiac surgery

    Get PDF
Perioperative acute myocardial dysfunction is an actual problem of cardiac surgery. Rational use of inotropes and mechanical circulatory support in the postoperative period remains a subject of debate. The outcomes of the combined coronary artery bypass grafting and heart valve prosthesis were analyzed in Irkutsk Cardiac Surgery Center after 80 patients were operated on. As a result of the conducted research, authors proposed a method of differentiated approach to the treatment of acute heart failure in the early postoperative period. Failure to escalate therapy beta agonists in the absence of adequate response hemodynamics and the transition to a mechanical circulatory support improves performance of the cardiovascular system and clinical outcomes, reduces hospitalization duration in the department of intensive therapy. The study showed the superiority of an early beginning of an intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation before traditional inotropic therapy in the treatment of postcardiotomy heartfailure at combined cardiac surgery

The article presents the study of features of formation and remodeling of distraction graft of rabbits' forearm bones at the passage of transosseous elements through acupuncture points. The aim of the work was to develop and perform quantitative estimation of regenerative process at the healing of forearm bone fractures using morphometric researches. We studied morphofunctional changes of graft on different stages of ossification using morphoscopy and morphometry and compared their quantitative characteristics with the ones in intact bone. Used index systems of estimation of regeneration processes at the healing of forearm bone fractures allow to reveal larger degree of statistical significance of obtained results not only in comparison with intact bone but also in over the time of experiment. Using quantitative variables and index estimation of regenerative processes at the healing of forearm bone fractures allow not only to objectify character of their changes but also to predict variability of its value
