    My concern in this paper is primarily with Elizabeth Stoddard\u27s The Morgesons, though I will close with a few observations about the canonization and exclusion of literary works. Stoddard\u27s novel, published in 1862, holds great interest because, among other things, it is in the position of possibly attaining a wider readership, if not canonization, and yet its success is hardly assured. Independent of its particular fictive character, it is a rewarding and strange work to read because of its positioning. Its 1984 republishing, edited and with an introduction by Lawrence Buell and Sandra Zagarell, has been variously received, achieving a degree of success and suffering a degree of rejection; presently, it\u27s selling fairly well but it\u27s future is yet to be determined. Far from a privileged text, it is open to the kind of criticism discussed above, where individual readers have a greater sense of empowerment

    Integration of Human Services among Counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania: Five Case Studies

    In July 2012, members of the University of Pittsburgh Institute of Politics Health and Human Services Committee met to discuss current policy issues. The 2012-2013 budget passed earlier that month by the General Assembly and signed into law by the governor included a significant decrease in funding for certain human services line items as well as a new human services block grant (HSBG) pilot program that would be open to 20 counties across the Commonwealth. As a result, the committee discussion centered on how human service delivery would be affected by these changes, and how integration might help or hinder counties as they seek to adapt to the changes. In response, this report considers the following questions: 1) What is the status of counties in Southwestern PA with regard to integration? 2) How has the level of integration affected counties’ ability to either apply for or implement the block grant pilot? 3) Are there lessons to be learned from those counties that have already undergone integration? The Institute of Politics has researched the integration of county human service departments and has conducted interviews with several counties in southwestern Pennsylvania that are in the process of integrating and/or have undergone integration. Many counties have shifted toward an integrative approach to strengthen delivery at the county level and to ensure resilience during times of economic difficulty. Allegheny, Greene, Venango, Washington, Butler, and other counties throughout Pennsylvania have integrated, centralized, and consolidated their offices to improve services. Others, such as Beaver and Westmoreland, operate under a non-integrated model. The concepts that this report will attempt to explain in greater depth are as follows: 1) The level of integration among counties in southwestern PA varies significantly and mirrors the type of variety seen across Pennsylvania. 2) The level of integration may not have bearing on the ability to apply for the block grant but may affect how it is implemented

    The paper deals with Integrated Prevention and PoIlution Controll (IPPC) directive and its application in steelmaking industry. The Best Available Techniques (BAT) principle is defined as the one of the most important tools of IPPC. Next four fundamental iron and steelmaking processes are discussed from the point of view of specific pollution to environment: production of iron ore sinter, production of pig iron in blast furnace, basic oxygen steelmaking, electric arc steelmaking, and BATs for the proccsses are defined.Rad se bavi direktivom o prevenciji i kontroli zagađivanja u integriranim čeličanama (IPPC) i njenom primjenom u industriji čelika. Načelo najbolje raspoložive tehnike (BAT) definirano je kao jedan od najvažnijih alata IPPC-a. O slijedeća četiri osnovna procesa za dobivanje željeza i čelika raspravlja se sa stajališta posebnog zagađivanja okoliša pa su tako definirane i proizvodnja sinterovane željezne rude, proizvodnja sirovog željeza u visokim pećima, proizvodnja čelika u konvertorima, proizvodnja čelika u elektrolučnoj peći i BAT za provođenje procesa

    U okviru programa trajne gerontološko-javnozdravstvene reedukacije interdisciplinarnih timova stručnjaka koji skrbe o starijim osobama, a koju redovito organizira Referentni centar Ministarstva zdravstva i socijalne skrbi Hrvatske za zaštitu zdravlja starijih osoba, održan je u Osijeku jednodnevni 12. Gerontološki tečaj . Tečaj je organiziran u suradnji sa Zavodom za javno zdravstvo Osječko–baranjske županije, s ravnateljem mr.sc. Rudan Stjepanom, dr. Kožul Karlom i dr. Santo Tiborom . Namijenjen je stručnjacima različitih profila koji skrbe za starije osobe, posebice u Osječko-baranjskoj i Vukovarsko-srijemskoj županiji. Nazočilo je 60 različitih stručnjaka, od liječnika obiteljske medicine, specijalista javnog zdravstva i epidemiologije, medicinskih sestara, viših fizioterapeuta, socijalnih djelatnika te gerontodomaćica, uglavnom iz domova za starije osobe, centara za njegu starijih osoba, gerontoloških centara i domova zdravlja

    Influence of type and shelf-life on two brands complementary food in color, vitamins, and sensory evaluation

    The aim of our study was to measure the color by system CIELAB, sensory analysis, and determination of vitamins in children vegetable complementary feeding (carrot, vegetable mix) with the option to extend shelf life from eighteen to twenty-one months. Complementary children food was obtained from private factory in the Czech Republic. In this research there were used only carrot and vegetable mix samples. To determine the color changes by system CIELAB and determination of vitamins, samples of mash were analyzed before filling into jars and sterilization, and then immediately after sterilization. Further analyzes were performed for twenty-one months, with run of every three months (p <0.05). The comparison of color CIELAB parameter L* (lightness) for two process steps: raw mash and sterilized mash; there were significant differences when processing (p <0.0001, r2 = 0.9983). Mainly, the parameter L* (Lightness) showed statistically significant differences in carrot and garden mix (p <0.05). β-carotenes such as provitamin A, is in food of plant origin stable substance in the absence of air. Storing time had significant influence on contain of β-carotenes, the mean content during twenty-one months was 0.862 mg.100g-1 (p <0.05, r2 = 0.2300). There were no significant differences in dark storing (p >0.05, r2 = 0.1097). The sensory evaluation showed statistical differences in all descriptors (color saturation, uniformity of color, consistency and homogeneity) (p <0.05) in course of months of storage time and storage conditions (daylight-dark). The results can be recommended to manufacturers, extending the period of minimum shelf life of the required three months to twenty-one months due to instability as characteristics of color and textural properties which were obtained

    Aging of beef rumpsteak on sensory quality, color appereance and texture properties

    The aim of the work was to optimize the time of aging of beef - rumpsteak for culinary processing in relation to color, texture and sensory changes.The 8 weeks of dry-aging had an influence on color change by 18% and there was darkening of samples, darker meat linearly, without any variations. During dry-aging decreased softness and increased strength steaks. There was no significant effect of maturation and softness, it has only been affected by less than 5% (p < 0.05). The best evaluation was obtained after 7 weeks of aging in descriptors. The main point was in intensity and pleasantness of flavor and intensity and pleasantness and taste. On the other hand, juiciness and texture to bite was evaluated after 4 weeks of aging the best. As the softest sample in descriptor texture in bites it was four-week aging; as the hardest sample was observed in 8 week of dry-aging. Dry-aging affected (p < 0.05) the L* value, the trend during dry-aging period had decreasing tendencies. On the other hand, in the course of decreasing lightness fluctuations was observed in lightness value L*. Chromaticity value a* displayed a negative significant (p < 0.05) correlation to weeks of dry-aging. Dry aging had a significant negative effect (p < 0.05) on the chromatic value b*. The length of the dry-aging had significant statistical impact on the ligthness and both chromatic coordinates. The length of dry-aging had paramount influence on the textural properties of rump steaks evaluated by instrument.O
