    Infrared excesses in stars with and without planets using revised WISE{\it WISE} photometry

    We present an analysis on the potential prevalence of mid infrared excesses in stars with and without planetary companions. Based on an extended database of stars detected with the WISE{\it WISE} satellite, we studied two stellar samples: one with 236 planet hosts and another with 986 objects for which planets have been searched but not found. We determined the presence of an excess over the photosphere by comparing the observed flux ratio at 22 μ\mum and 12 μ\mum (f22/f12f_{22}/f_{12}) with the corresponding synthetic value, derived from results of classical model photospheres. We found a detection rate of 0.85%\% at 22 μ\mum (2 excesses) in the sample of stars with planets and 0.1%\% (1 detection) for the stars without planets. The difference of the detection rate between the two samples is not statistically significant, a result that is independent of the different approaches found in the literature to define an excess in the wavelength range covered by WISE{\it WISE} observations. As an additional result, we found that the WISE{\it WISE} fluxes required a normalisation procedure to make them compatible with synthetic data, probably pointing out a revision of the WISE{\it WISE} data calibration.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables.     The effects of the returning behaviour in the profitability of customers within fashion e-commerce

    Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the experience that customers gain by means of their purchasing and returning behaviour affects their profitability for the e-commerce fashion company. More specifically, how the profit per order or per period of time that this customers represent varies, depending on his previous experience. Method: The methodology followed for the present project combined the development of an algorithm to process the available raw data with a case study approach. In the first stage a conceptual model and an algorithm where developed, followed then by an analysis of the data obtained from the output of the model. The results of the analysis were then used to assess the defined research questions. Limitations: The scope of the project is limited to the case of a specific fashion e-commerce company, and the data used corresponds to the year 2009. Findings: Experiencing a return during the first orders of a customer enhances this customer’s confidence in the e-commerce company and increases the customer retention rate. However, customers who make returns from the first orders have higher chances of returning from the future orders they purchase and, therefore, these customers show a lower average profitability per order than those who do not return from those orders.Outgoin

    Melatonin-independent Photoperiodic Entrainment of the Circannual TSH Rhythm in the Pars Tuberalis of the European Hamster

    Adaptation of biological rhythms to a seasonal environment in circannual mammals is achieved via the synchronization of intrinsic circannual rhythms to the external year by photoperiod. In mammals, the photoperiodic information is integrated to seasonal physiology via the pineal hormone melatonin regulation of pars tuberalis (PT) TSH expression and its downstream control of hypothalamic dio2 gene expression. In the circannual European hamster, however, photoperiodic entrainment of the circannual clock is possible in pinealectomized animals. The present study explores whether the TSH expression in the PT and the downstream hypothalamic pathways are regulated by photoperiod in European hamsters in the absence of melatonin. All animals were kept on an accelerated photoperiodic regime, which compressed the natural year to a 6-month cycle. Sham-operated European hamsters and half of the pinealectomized European hamsters entrained their annual cycle in reproduction, body weight, and activity pattern to this cycle, whereas the other half of the pinealectomized animals followed only each second cycle. In all animals, PT TSH and hypothalamic dio2 expressions were higher in hamsters displaying a summer physiological state than in those in winter state. Moreover, in agreement with their seasonal state, reproductive animals (summer state) showed higher expression of rfrp and lower expression of kiss1-genes encoding central regulators of the reproductive axis-than those animals in reproductive quiescence (winter state), indicating the hypothalamic integration of the photoperiodic signal even in pinealectomized animals. The appropriate occurrence of a well-characterized activity pattern indicative of a so-called sensitive phase to short photoperiod suggested that the SCN constructs the melatonin-independent photoperiodic message. This message is sufficient to entrain the circannual rhythm in TSH expression in the PT and the downstream hypothalamic neuroendocrine pathway through a yet unknown pathway. These results reinforce the hypothesis that the PT is the site for the integration of circannual and photoperiodic information

    Tobacco Taxes as the Unsung Hero: Impact of a Tax Increase on Advancing Sustainable Development in Colombia

    Objective: Tobacco taxes are a well-established cost-effective policy to prevent Noncommunicable Diseases. This paper evaluates the expected effects of a tobacco tax increase on the Sustainable Development Goals in Colombia. Methods: We use microsimulation to build an artificial society that mimics the observed characteristics of Colombia’s population, and from there we simulate the behavioral response to a tax increase of COP$4,750 (an increase that has been discussed by policy makers and legislators) and the subsequent effects in all SDGs. Results: The tobacco tax hike reduces the number of smokers (from 4.51 to 3.45 MM smokers) and smoking intensity, resulting in a drop in the number of cigarettes smoked in Colombia (from 332.3 to 215.5 MM of 20-stick packs). Such reduction is expected to decrease premature mortality, healthcare costs, poverty and people facing catastrophic expenditure on healthcare, to increase health, income and gender equity, and to strengthen domestic resource mobilization even in the presence of illicit cigarettes. Conclusion: Tobacco taxes are an effective intervention for public health and a powerful instrument to advance on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Relevance: A comprehensive analysis of the impact of tobacco taxes on all areas of Sustainable Development is missing in the empirical literature. Such perspective is needed to break the barriers for further tobacco tax increases by gathering wider societal support, especially from stakeholders and key decision makers from development areas other than health.     Impaired Fast-Spiking, Suppressed Cortical Inhibition, and Increased Susceptibility to Seizures in Mice Lacking Kv3.2 K+ Channel Proteins

    Voltage-gated K(+) channels of the Kv3 subfamily have unusual electrophysiological properties, including activation at very depolarized voltages (positive to -10 mV) and very fast deactivation rates, suggesting special roles in neuronal excitability. In the brain, Kv3 channels are prominently expressed in select neuronal populations, which include fast-spiking (FS) GABAergic interneurons of the neocortex, hippocampus, and caudate, as well as other high-frequency firing neurons. Although evidence points to a key role in high-frequency firing, a definitive understanding of the function of these channels has been hampered by a lack of selective pharmacological tools. We therefore generated mouse lines in which one of the Kv3 genes, Kv3.2, was disrupted by gene-targeting methods. Whole-cell electrophysiological recording showed that the ability to fire spikes at high frequencies was impaired in immunocytochemically identified FS interneurons of deep cortical layers (5-6) in which Kv3.2 proteins are normally prominent. No such impairment was found for FS neurons of superficial layers (2-4) in which Kv3.2 proteins are normally only weakly expressed. These data directly support the hypothesis that Kv3 channels are necessary for high-frequency firing. Moreover, we found that Kv3.2 -/- mice showed specific alterations in their cortical EEG patterns and an increased susceptibility to epileptic seizures consistent with an impairment of cortical inhibitory mechanisms. This implies that, rather than producing hyperexcitability of the inhibitory interneurons, Kv3.2 channel elimination suppresses their activity. These data suggest that normal cortical operations depend on the ability of inhibitory interneurons to generate high-frequency firing

    Massive compact disks around FU Orionis-type young eruptive stars revealed by ALMA

    FU Orionis-type objects (FUors) are low-mass pre-main sequence stars undergoing a temporary, but significant increase of mass accretion rate from the circumstellar disk onto the protostar. It is not yet clear what triggers the accretion bursts and whether the disks of FUors are in any way different from disks of non-bursting young stellar objects. Motivated by this, we conducted a 1.3 mm continuum survey of ten FUors and FUor-like objects with ALMA, using both the 7 m array and the 12 m array in two different configurations to recover emission at the widest possible range of spatial scales. We detected all targeted sources and several nearby objects as well. To constrain the disk structure, we fit the data with models of increasing complexity from 2D Gaussian to radiative transfer, enabling comparison with other samples modeled in a similar way. The radiative transfer modeling gives disk masses that are significantly larger than what is obtained from the measured millimeter fluxes assuming optically thin emission, suggesting that the FUor disks are optically thick at this wavelength. In comparison with samples of regular Class II and Class I objects, the disks of FUors are typically a factor of 2.9-4.4 more massive and a factor of 1.5-4.7 smaller in size. A significant fraction of them (65-70%) may be gravitationally unstable

    The Relation between the Mass Accretion Rate and the Disk Mass in Class I Protostars

    Evidence of a relation between the mass accretion rate and the disk mass is established for young, Class II pre-main-sequence stars. This observational result opened an avenue to test theoretical models and constrain the initial conditions of disk formation, fundamental in the understanding of the emergence of planetary systems. However, it is becoming clear that planet formation starts even before the Class II stage, in disks around Class 0 and I protostars. We show for the first time evidence for a correlation between the mass accretion rate and the disk mass for a large sample of Class I young stars located in nearby (<500 pc) star-forming regions. We fit our sample, finding that the Class I object relation has a slope flatter than Class II stars, and the former have higher mass accretion rates and disk masses. The results are put in context of disk evolution models
