Computing upper-bounds of the minimum dwell time of linear switched systems via homogenous polynomial lyapunov functions
Regular Session - Switched Systems IIThis paper investigates the minimum dwell time for switched linear systems. It is shown that a sequence of upper bounds of the minimum dwell time can be computed by exploiting homogeneous polynomial Lyapunov functions and convex optimization based on LMIs. This sequence is obtained by adopting two possible representations of homogeneous polynomials, one based on Kronecker products, and the other on the square matrix representation. Motion-base simulator study of control of an externally blown flap STOL transport aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during landing approach
A moving-base simulator investigation of the problems of recovery and landing of a STOL aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during final approach was made. The approaches were made at 75 knots along a 6 deg glide slope. The engine was failed at low altitude and the option to go around was not allowed. The aircraft was simulated with each of three control systems, and it had four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines exhausting against large triple-slotted wing flaps to produce additional lift. A virtual-image out-the-window television display of a simulated STOL airport was operating during part of the investigation. Also, a simple heads-up flight director display superimposed on the airport landing scene was used by the pilots to make some of the recoveries following an engine failure. The results of the study indicated that the variation in visual cues and/or motion cues had little effect on the outcome of a recovery, but they did have some effect on the pilot's response and control patterns
User evaluation of a market-based recommender system
Recommender systems have been developed for a wide variety of applications (ranging from books, to holidays, to web pages). These systems have used a number of different approaches, since no one technique is best for all users in all situations. Given this, we believe that to be effective, systems should incorporate a wide variety of such techniques and then some form of overarching framework should be put in place to coordinate them so that only the best recommendations (from whatever source) are presented to the user. To this end, in our previous work, we detailed a market-based approach in which various recommender agents competed with one another to present their recommendations to the user. We showed through theoretical analysis and empirical evaluation with simulated users that an appropriately designed marketplace should be able to provide effective coordination. Building on this, we now report on the development of this multi-agent system and its evaluation with real users. Specifically, we show that our system is capable of consistently giving high quality recommendations, that the best recommendations that could be put forward are actually put forward, and that the combination of recommenders performs better than any constituent recommende
A nonconservative LMI condition for stability of switched systems with guaranteed dwell time
Ensuring stability of switched linear systems with a guaranteed dwell time is an important problem in control systems. Several methods have been proposed in the literature to address this problem, but unfortunately they provide sufficient conditions only. This technical note proposes the use of homogeneous polynomial Lyapunov functions in the non-restrictive case where all the subsystems are Hurwitz, showing that a sufficient condition can be provided in terms of an LMI feasibility test by exploiting a key representation of polynomials. Several properties are proved for this condition, in particular that it is also necessary for a sufficiently large degree of these functions. As a result, the proposed condition provides a sequence of upper bounds of the minimum dwell time that approximate it arbitrarily well. Random manifolds in non-linear resistor networks: Applications to varistors and superconductors
We show that current localization in polycrystalline varistors occurs on
paths which are, usually, in the universality class of the directed polymer in
a random medium. We also show that in ceramic superconductors, voltage
localizes on a surface which maps to an Ising domain wall. The emergence of
these manifolds is explained and their structure is illustrated using direct
solution of non-linear resistor networks
Dissociation, shame, complex PTSD, child maltreatment and intimate relationship self-concept in dissociative disorder, chronic PTSD and mixed psychiatric groups.
Whilst a growing body of research has examined dissociation and other psychiatric
symptoms in severe dissociative disorders (DDs), there has been no systematic examination of shame
and sense of self in relationships in DDs. Chronic child abuse often associated with severe DDs, like
dissociative identity disorder, is likely to heighten shame and relationship concerns. This study
investigated complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline and Schneiderian symptoms,
dissociation, shame, child abuse, and various markers of self in relationships (e.g., relationship esteem,
relationship depression, fear of relationships).
Methods: Participants were assessed via clinical interview with psychometrically sound questionnaires.
They fell into three diagnostic groups, dissociative disorder (n¼39; primarily dissociative identity
disorder), chronic PTSD (Chr-PTSD; n¼13) or mixed psychiatric presentations (MP; n¼21; primarily
mood and anxiety disorders). All participants had a history of child abuse and/or neglect, and the groups
did not differ on age and gender.
Results: The DD group was higher on nearly all measured variables than the MP group, and had more
severe dissociative, borderline and Schneiderian symptoms than the Chr-PTSD sample. Shame and
complex PTSD symptoms fell marginally short of predicting reductions in relationship esteem,
pathological dissociative symptoms predicted increased relationship depression, and complex PTSD
symptoms predicted fear of relationships.
Limitations: The representativeness of the samples was unknown.
Conclusion: Severe psychiatric symptoms differentiate DDs from chronic PTSD, while dissociation and
shame have a meaningful impact on specific markers of relationship functioning in psychiatric patients
with a history of child abuse and neglect
Transitions in non-conserving models of Self-Organized Criticality
We investigate a random--neighbours version of the two dimensional
non-conserving earthquake model of Olami, Feder and Christensen [Phys. Rev.
Lett. {\bf 68}, 1244 (1992)]. We show both analytically and numerically that
criticality can be expected even in the presence of dissipation. As the
critical level of conservation, , is approached, the cut--off of the
avalanche size distribution scales as . The
transition from non-SOC to SOC behaviour is controlled by the average branching
ratio of an avalanche, which can thus be regarded as an order
parameter of the system. The relevance of the results are discussed in
connection to the nearest-neighbours OFC model (in particular we analyse the
