“Sustainable University” – empirical evidence and strategic recommendations for holistic transformation approaches to sustainability in higher education institutions
Sustainable development, and the process of institutional transformation this requires, remains a considerable challenge for universities. Worldwide, only a few universities are to date confronting these challenges. Through its initiatives “Agenda 21 and the University of Lüneburg” (1999-2001) and “Sustainable University – Sustainable Development in the Context of University Remits” (2004-2007), as well as through the UNESCO Chair of Higher Education for Sustainable Development, the University of Lüneburg has been among the first European universities to view the institution as a whole and to attempt to initiate processes in all working areas which point the way towards the integration of sustainability into each of the different areas in which it is active.Peer Reviewe

The author postulates that communication on environmental issues and sustainability will only be successful when it is institutionalized. He further states that it should be linked to the model of "sustainability", for which its speeches should be placed in the context of Sustainable Development, and that, beyond the transmission of information, it requires a discussion of unresolved problems and the dangers that are at stake. Finally ensures that communication on environmental issues is an opportunity for citizenship participation

Eine Zusammenfassung der Diskussion schließt sich an.The workshop documentation was developed as part of the inter-university project "Participatory development of indicators of sustainability. A contribution to a process-oriented sustainability strategy ". It was carried out at the beginning of March 2000 to April 2001 by scientists from the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Politik, HWP), the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (Universität der Bundeswehr) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie). The workshop documented here took place on March 23, 2001 at the University of the German Armed Forces. The project team presented its work results to an audience from science and practice for discussion. Participants included representatives from companies, government departments at state and municipal level, educational institutions, consulting companies, statistical offices and associations, universities and research institutions from social, engineering and natural sciences disciplines. They came from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. The documentation contains the lectures of four project participants, in which central results of the project are presented, and corrections by external scientists and experts. A summary of the discussion follows

(DIPF/Orig.)The efforts of the University of Lüneburg concerning the development of a culture of learning, teaching and living at the university geared to the approach of Sustainability have already been described in the ZEP-issue "Globales Lernen in Forschung und Lehre". This article now focusses on the perspective of informal learning within the research- and development-project "Sustainable Development in the context of university tasks" at the University of Lüneburg.
(Autorenreferat
