Efficient dielectric matrix calculations using the Lanczos algorithm for fast many-body G0W0G_0W_0 implementations

    Get PDF
We present a G0W0G_0W_0 implementation that assesses the two major bottlenecks of traditional plane-waves implementations, the summations over conduction states and the inversion of the dielectric matrix, without introducing new approximations in the formalism. The first bottleneck is circumvented by converting the summations into Sternheimer equations. Then, the novel avenue of expressing the dielectric matrix in a Lanczos basis is developed, which reduces the matrix size by orders of magnitude while being computationally efficient. We also develop a model dielectric operator that allows us to further reduce the size of the dielectric matrix without accuracy loss. Furthermore, we develop a scheme that reduces the numerical cost of the contour deformation technique to the level of the lightest plasmon pole model. Finally, the use of the simplified quasi-minimal residual scheme in replacement of the conjugate gradients algorithm allows a direct evaluation of the G0W0G_0W_0 corrections at the desired real frequencies, without need for analytical continuation. The performance of the resulting G0W0G_0W_0 implementation is demonstrated by comparison with a traditional plane-waves implementation, which reveals a 500-fold speedup for the silane molecule. Finally, the accuracy of our G0W0G_0W_0 implementation is demonstrated by comparison with other G0W0G_0W_0 calculations and experimental results.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figure

Caregiver Support within the Dementia Context: Best Practices in Responding to Ambiguous Loss

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to use the concept of ambiguous loss as a lens to explore common challenges that family caregivers experience when caring for a loved one with dementia. This study attempted to collect qualitative data from licensed social workers who have experience working with family members and their diagnosed loved ones. Key findings made in this study include the different forms in which ambiguous loss may cause distress on behalf of caregivers: A physical presence yet psychological absence (an example of boundary ambiguity) on behalf of the diagnosed individual, the loss of future potential on behalf of spousal-caregivers, and role changes within the family system. Other findings include the tendency for caregivers to isolate themselves from outside support due to the private nature of caregiving and a possible stigma against support group attendance. Research recommendations as well as recommendations to social workers within the dementia context are also discussed. Given the relative infancy of the current research base regarding ambitious loss within the dementia context, it is important that future studies continue to examine the nuanced form of grief that individuals face when caring for a loved one with a neurodegenerative disease

Caregivers: their perspective on mental health services offered to relatives The current study has been conducted with 40 caregivers who are part of family support groups of people suffering of mental disorders. These caregivers have been interviewed individually in order to document their opinion on mental health services offered to their relatives. Analysis of their comments indicate both the expression of satisfaction and lack of it regarding organisation of services by most participants. However, the issue of service organisation, and more specifically in relation with access, entail the greatest number of comments of dissatisfaction.

log(TG)/HDL-C is related to both residual cardiometabolic risk and β-cell function loss in type 2 diabetes males

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>T2DM is associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia (AD), defined as decreased HDL-C plus raised triglycerides (TG). AD confers increased risk for CAD, even when LDL-C is at target. AD is rarely assessed due to lack of screening methods consensus.</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>To establish the prevalence and severity of AD from <it>log</it>(TG)/HDL-C in T2DM males, and to determine how it relates to cardiometabolic phenotype, glucose homeostasis, micro- and macrovascular complications, and 10-year <it>UKPDS </it>CV risk.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>585 T2DM males divided according to quintiles (Q) of <it>log</it>(TG)/HDL-C. AD prevalence defined as HDL-C <40 mg.dL-1 plus TG ≥150 mg.dL-1. β-cell function assessed with HOMA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean HDL-C and TG were 44 (13) and 204 (155) mg.dL-1. AD prevalence was 35%. AD correlated with lower β-cell function, with accelerated loss of insulin secretion, and with poorer HbA1c levels. AD was related to a high prevalence of CAD, and also to 10-year absolute CAD risk.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>log</it>(TG)/HDL-C is a simple means to estimate AD and the residual CV risk it confers in T2DM. AD closely associates with major cardiometabolic and glucose homeostasis determinants and poorer metabolic control. The ratio also relates to macroangiopathy prevalence and ranks future CAD risk, and is well-suited to capture non-LDL-related macrovascular residual risk and major glycemic determinants.</p
