    With the increasing trend of popularity of websites and social networking sites, it is quite evident that companies need to take cautionary measures in protecting the reputations with respect to company and brands. In this process, every company should indulge in enhancing their company and brand image through websites and social networking sites that fortify the bonding nature among them.     Long-Time Behavior of Quasilinear Thermoelastic Kirchhoff-Love Plates with Second Sound

    We consider an initial-boundary-value problem for a thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate, thermally insulated and simply supported on the boundary, incorporating rotational inertia and a quasilinear hypoelastic response, while the heat effects are modeled using the hyperbolic Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte law giving rise to a 'second sound' effect. We study the local well-posedness of the resulting quasilinear mixed-order hyperbolic system in a suitable solution class of smooth functions mapping into Sobolev HkH^{k}-spaces. Exploiting the sole source of energy dissipation entering the system through the hyperbolic heat flux moment, provided the initial data are small in a lower topology (basic energy level corresponding to weak solutions), we prove a nonlinear stabilizability estimate furnishing global existence & uniqueness and exponential decay of classical solutions.Comment: 46 page

    Improving the validity of Script Concordance Testing by optimising and balancing items

    Background: A script concordance test (SCT) is a modality for assessing clinical reasoning. Concerns had been raised about the plausible validity threat to SCT scores if students deliberately avoided the extreme answer options to obtain higher scores. The aims of the study were firstly to investigate whether students’ avoidance of the extreme answer options could result in higher scores, and secondly to determine whether a ‘balanced approach’ by careful construction of SCT items (to include extreme as well as median options as model responses) would improve the validity of an SCT. Methods: Using the paired sample t-test, the actual average student scores for 10 SCT papers from 2012–2016 were compared with simulated scores. The latter were generated by recoding all ‘2’ responses to ‘1’ and ‘+2’ responses to ‘+1’ for the whole and bottom 10% of the cohort (simulation 1), and scoring as if all students had chosen ‘0’ for their responses (simulation 2). The actual average and simulated average scores in 2012 (before the ‘balanced approach’) were compared with those from 2013–2016, when papers had a good balance of modal responses from the expert reference panel. Results: In 2012, a score increase was seen in simulation 1 in the third-year cohort, from 50.2 to 55.6% (t [10] = 4.818; p = 0.001). Since 2013, with the ‘balanced approach’, the actual SCT scores (57.4%) were significantly higher than scores in both simulation 1 and simulation 2 (46.7% and 23.9% respectively). Conclusions: When constructing SCT examinations, apart from the rigorous pre-examination optimisation, it is desirable to achieve a balance between items that attract extreme responses and those that attract median response options. This could mitigate the validity threat to SCT scores, especially for the low-performing students who have previously been shown to only select median responses and avoid the extreme responses

    The paper examines the antecedents of acceptance of social networking sites in retail franchise and restaurant businesses. The success of retail franchise and restaurant business oper-ators via social networking sites depends not only on organiza-tional benefits but also on their behavioral intentions of using it. Three hundred and twenty four samples collected from South Korean retail franchise and restaurant employees are analyzed using factor analysis, structural equation model techniques and one-way analysis of variance. The results of the study identify the three constructs of organizational benefits, perceived tangible assets and perceived intangible assets as for important ante-cedents to accept social networking sites for their business use. Moreover, higher position employees tend to have more favor-able perception of tangible assets and acceptance of social net-working sites for their business use

    A top bar effect has been identified in prestressed concrete piles. The effect that this top bar effect has on the development of the prestressing strand is investigated. Strand transfer length is found to be proportional to the observed end slip. While the average transfer length of all strands in a section may satisfy the assumptions inherent in the ACI transfer length equation, due to the top bar effect, top-cast strand transfer lengths are considerably in excess of the ACI-calculated value. The flexural behavior of the pile, accounting for varying transfer lengths through its section, is investigated. Finally, recommendations for in-plant testing and acceptance criteria for prestressed strand bond quality are proposed

    Using the script concordance test to assess clinical reasoning skills in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine

    The script concordance test is a relatively new format of written assessment that is used to assess higher order clinical reasoning and data interpretation skills in medicine. Candidates are presented with a clinical scenario, followed by the reveal of a new piece of information. The candidates are then asked to assess whether this additional information increases or decreases the probability or likelihood of a particular diagnostic, investigative, or management decision. To score these questions, the candidate’s decision in each question is compared with that of a reference panel of expert clinicians. This review focuses on the development of quality script concordance questions, using expert panel lists to score the items and set the passing score standard, and the challenges in the practical implementation (including pitfalls to avoid) of the written assessment

    Top Bar Effects in Prestressed Concrete Piles

    The top bar effect in reinforced concrete is a widely recognized phenomenon. Currently, the ACI Building Code prescribes a 30% increase in the development length of top cast reinforcing bars. No such provision is required for strands in prestressed concrete members. In this paper, the top bar effect for prestressing strands is introduced. Parameters affecting top bar phenomena in prestressed concrete piles are identified, and strategies for reducing this effect are presented. Finally, for the first time, the application of a top bar effect factor for prestressed concrete development length calculations, similar to the one applied in reinforced concrete structural elements, is proposed

    Observation Of Turbulent Intermittency Scaling With Magnetic Helicity In An MHD Plasma Wind Tunnel

    The intermittency in turbulent magnetic field fluctuations has been observed to scale with the amount of magnetic helicity injected into a laboratory plasma. An unstable spheromak injected into the MHD wind tunnel of the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment displays turbulent magnetic and plasma fluctuations as it relaxes into a Taylor state. The level of intermittency of this turbulence is determined by finding the flatness of the probability distribution function of increments for magnetic pickup coil fluctuations B(t). The intermittency increases with the injected helicity, but spectral indices are unaffected by this variation. While evidence is provided which supports the hypothesis that current sheets and reconnection sites are related to the generation of this intermittent signal, the true nature of the observed intermittency remains unknown
