    Expert Opinion of Michael Sobel

Expert opinion of Dr. Michael Sobel, forensic odontologist, on the cause of Marilyn\u27s broken teeth. Sobel disagrees with Kirk\u27s assertion that Marilyn\u27s teeth were broken as a result of biting her assailant, opining that the damage was a result of blunt trauma. Sobel also offers his opinion concerning her broken-off (avulsed) fingernail. He hypothesizes that it occurred in the course of scratching her attacker and suggests that the Eberling wrist scar would match the scenario

Culture Wars and Opinion Polarization: The Case of Abortion

    Get PDF
Recent observers have pointed to a growing polarization within the U.S. public over politicized moral issues-the so-called culture wars. DiMaggio, Evans, and Bryson studied trends over the past 25 years in American opinion on a number of critical social issues, finding little evidence of increased polarization; abortion is the primary exception. However, their conclusions are suspect because they treat ordinal or nominal scales as interval data. This article proposes new methods for studying polarization using ordinal data and uses these to model the National Election Study (NES) abortion item. Whereas the analysis of this item by DiMaggio et al. points to increasing polarization of abortion attitudes between 1972 and 1994, this article's analyses of these data offers little support for this conclusion and lends weight to their view that recent concerns over polarization are overstated

Guidelines for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis: focus on tinidazole

    Get PDF
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a complex vaginal infection most commonly associated with women of child-bearing age. Risk factors for BV are numerous. There are currently multiple clinical and laboratory tests for diagnosis of BV, including the most commonly used diagnostic methods: Amsel’s criteria or Nugent’s Gram stain scale. The mainstay of BV therapy is metronidazole, but tinidazole as well as a few other agents have also been used successfully. Tinidazole is the second nitroimidazole antiprotozoal agent and a structural derivative of metronidazole. With a favorable pharmacokinetic profile and reduced side effects, tinidazole is an alternative agent for BV treatment. There are minimal head-to-head comparative data to establish tinidazole’s superiority to metronidazole or other therapeutic agents. Available data suggest tinidazole has a role in special populations particularly for refractory or relapsing BV

Association of U.S. tornado occurrence with monthly environmental parameters

Monthly U.S. tornado numbers are here related to observation-based monthly averaged atmospheric parameters. Poisson regression is used to form an index which captures the climatological spatial distribution and seasonal variation of tornado occurrence, as well as year-to-year variability, and provides a framework for extended range forecasts of tornado activity. Computing the same index with predicted atmospheric parameters from a comprehensive forecast model gives some evidence of the predictability of monthly tornado activity
