    Extending the Technology Acceptance Model in Healthcare: Identifying the Role of Trust and Shared Information

    We propose extensions to the Technology Acceptance Model for the adoption of integrated electronic health records that are shared by multiple health care providers. In particular, we propose a conceptual model in which we incorporate two new factors, trust and access to shared information, into the Technology Acceptance Model. Preliminary results conļ¬rm the statistically signiļ¬cant and positive impact of perceived usefulness on behavioral intent to use integrated electronic health records and a significant and positive impact of perceived ease of use on perceived usefulness. We also find a statistically signiļ¬cant eļ¬€ect of shared information on behavioral intent to use integrated health records. We expect that further analysis of additional data we are collecting will oļ¬€er improved insights into the eļ¬€ects of these factors on intention to use integrated electronic health records

    Effects of video modeling on social initiations by children with autism

    We examined the effects of a video modeling intervention on social initiation and play behaviors with three children with autism using a multiple-baseline across subjects design. Each child watched a videotape showing a typically developing peer and the experimenter engaged in a simple social interactive play using one toy. For all children social initiation and reciprocal play skills were enhanced and these effects maintained at a 1- and 3- month follow-up period

    Author Institution: COSI Academy, Center of Science and Industry ; US Geological SurveyAS part of a COSI Academy research project, data from a recent statewide analysis of effective groundwater recharge were reexamined by students to further discern relations between recharge and selected environmental characteristics of individual drainage basins: 1) location of the main stem of a river relative to coarse and fine surficial sediments and 2) influence of land use. Lack of sufficiently detailed data was the principal difficulty in most phases of the examination. Other than a potential relation between recharge and the percentages of agricultural and forested land, no relations were found in visual comparisons of mapped and tabulated data

    VRContour: Bringing Contour Delineations of Medical Structures Into Virtual Reality

    Contouring is an indispensable step in Radiotherapy (RT) treatment planning. However, today's contouring software is constrained to only work with a 2D display, which is less intuitive and requires high task loads. Virtual Reality (VR) has shown great potential in various specialties of healthcare and health sciences education due to the unique advantages of intuitive and natural interactions in immersive spaces. VR-based radiation oncology integration has also been advocated as a target healthcare application, allowing providers to directly interact with 3D medical structures. We present VRContour and investigate how to effectively bring contouring for radiation oncology into VR. Through an autobiographical iterative design, we defined three design spaces focused on contouring in VR with the support of a tracked tablet and VR stylus, and investigating dimensionality for information consumption and input (either 2D or 2D + 3D). Through a within-subject study (n = 8), we found that visualizations of 3D medical structures significantly increase precision, and reduce mental load, frustration, as well as overall contouring effort.     The self-publishing revolution has created a drastic increase in the number or works being published in the social sciences and humanities. This windfall of content has created an abundance that can be overwhelming, but it ultimately presents an opportunity for libraries to develop deeper and more unique collections. The preconference at the 2013 Charleston Conference focused on several interrelated topics in the self-publishing world: navigating the abundance of self-published material, librariesā€™ adoption of the role of publisher, vendor perspectives on self-published content and plans for the future, issues in humanities and social science acquisitions of self-published works, and an agentā€™s perspective on how self-publishing fits into the traditional publishing world. Speakers include librarians, publishers, vendors, and academics involved with a number of projects and efforts to pioneer this emerging field
