    The Gravitational Lens Candidate FBQ 1633+3134

    We present our ground-based optical imaging, spectral analysis, and high resolution radio mapping of the gravitational lens candidate FBQ 1633+3134. This z=1.52, B=17.7 quasar appears double on CCD images with an image separation of 0.66 arcseconds and a flux ratio of ~3:1 across BVRI filters. A single 0.27 mJy radio source is detected at 8.46 GHz, coincident to within an arcsecond of both optical components, but no companion at radio wavelengths is detected down to a flux level of 0.1 mJy (3 sigma). Spectral observations reveal a rich metal-line absorption system consisting of a strong Mg II doublet and associated Fe I and Fe II absorption features, all at an intervening redshift of z=0.684, suggestive of a lensing galaxy. Point spread function subtraction however shows no obvious signs of a third object between the two quasar images, and places a detection limit of I > 23.0 if such an object exists. Although the possibility that FBQ 1633+3134 is a binary quasar cannot be ruled out, the evidence is consistent with it being a single quasar lensed by a faint, metal-rich galaxy.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures.     The time delay of the quadruple quasar RX J0911.4+0551

    We present optical lightcurves of the gravitationally lensed components A (=A1+A2+A3) and B of the quadruple quasar RX J0911.4+0551 (z = 2.80). The observations were primarily obtained at the Nordic Optical Telescope between 1997 March and 2001 April and consist of 74 I-band data points for each component. The data allow the measurement of a time delay of 146 +- 8 days (2 sigma) between A and B, with B as the leading component. This value is significantly shorter than that predicted from simple models and indicates a very large external shear. Mass models including the main lens galaxy and the surrounding massive cluster of galaxies at z = 0.77, responsible for the external shear, yield H_0 = 71 +- 4 (random, 2 sigma) +- 8 (systematic) km/s/Mpc. The systematic model uncertainty is governed by the surface-mass density (convergence) at the location of the multiple images.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, ApJL, in press (June 20, 2002

    Surface Gap Soliton Ground States for the Nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger Equation

    We consider the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation (Δ+V(x))u=Γ(x)up1u(-\Delta +V(x))u = \Gamma(x) |u|^{p-1}u, xRnx\in \R^n with V(x)=V1(x)χ{x1>0}(x)+V2(x)χ{x1<0}(x)V(x) = V_1(x) \chi_{\{x_1>0\}}(x)+V_2(x) \chi_{\{x_1<0\}}(x) and Γ(x)=Γ1(x)χ{x1>0}(x)+Γ2(x)χ{x1<0}(x)\Gamma(x) = \Gamma_1(x) \chi_{\{x_1>0\}}(x)+\Gamma_2(x) \chi_{\{x_1<0\}}(x) and with V1,V2,Γ1,Γ2V_1, V_2, \Gamma_1, \Gamma_2 periodic in each coordinate direction. This problem describes the interface of two periodic media, e.g. photonic crystals. We study the existence of ground state H1H^1 solutions (surface gap soliton ground states) for 0<minσ(Δ+V)0<\min \sigma(-\Delta +V). Using a concentration compactness argument, we provide an abstract criterion for the existence based on ground state energies of each periodic problem (with VV1,ΓΓ1V\equiv V_1, \Gamma\equiv \Gamma_1 and VV2,ΓΓ2V\equiv V_2, \Gamma\equiv \Gamma_2) as well as a more practical criterion based on ground states themselves. Examples of interfaces satisfying these criteria are provided. In 1D it is shown that, surprisingly, the criteria can be reduced to conditions on the linear Bloch waves of the operators d2dx2+V1(x)-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2} +V_1(x) and d2dx2+V2(x)-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2} +V_2(x).Comment: definition of ground and bound states added, assumption (H2) weakened (sign changing nonlinearity is now allowed); 33 pages, 4 figure

    Multicenter observational study on factors and outcomes associated with various methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus types in children with cystic fibrosis

    Rationale: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) prevalence continues to increase in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in the United States, reaching 26.5% in 2012. Approximately 30% of strains are SCCmec (staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec) IV type, frequently USA300, which in the general population have different genotypic and phenotypic features than SCCmec II type. Objectives: We hypothesized that risk factors for acquisition and outcomes in patients with CF differed for "health care-associated" (SCCmec II) versus "community-associated" (SCCmec IV)MRSAstrains. Methods: To determine the role of SCCmec type and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), MRSA isolates from patients not more than 18 years old at seven CF centers were typed and the association of potential risk factors and subsequent clinical course was assessed, using data provided by the CF Patient Registry. Measurements and Main Results: Participants with chronic MRSA (295) had typeable isolates and clinical data; 205 (69.5%) had SCCmec II PVL(-), 39 (13.2%) had SCCmec IV PVL(-), and 51 (17.3%) had SCCmec IVPVL(1) strains.SCCmec IV, comparedwith SCCmec II, increased during the study period, 1996-2010 (P = 0.03). SCCmec II was associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa-positive cultures and three or more clinic visits in the 6 months preceding the first positive MRSA culture (adjusted odds ratio, 2.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-3.74; P = 0.019). Lung function and anthropometrics remained unchanged in the 6 months after initial MRSA detection compared with the 6 months prior. Although CF care increased for participants in both groups in the 6 months after MRSA detection, inhaled antibiotics were prescribed more frequently in those with SCCmec II strains and increased hospitalizations occurred in those with SCCmec IV PVL(-) strains compared with those with PVL(1) strains (adjusted difference, 34.10%; 95% confidence interval, 7.58-60.61; P = 0.012). Participants in both groups had an increase in CF care in the 2 years after MRSA detection compared with the 2 years prior. Conclusions: Increased exposure to CF clinics and P. aeruginosa may constitute risk factors for acquisition of SCCmec II MRSA strains. Clinical interventions increased 6 months and 2 years after initial MRSA detection regardless of SCCmec type

    Linking the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions

    We show that the electric glueball becomes critical at the end-point of the deconfinement phase transition in finite temperature QCD. Based on this observation and existing lattice data, we argue that the chiral phase transition at a zero quark mass and the deconfinement phase transition at an infinite quark mass are continuously connected by the glueball-sigma mixing.Comment: 4 pages, terminology corrected.     On the Quantitative Impact of the Schechter-Valle Theorem

    We evaluate the Schechter-Valle (Black Box) theorem quantitatively by considering the most general Lorentz invariant Lagrangian consisting of point-like operators for neutrinoless double beta decay. It is well known that the Black Box operators induce Majorana neutrino masses at four-loop level. This warrants the statement that an observation of neutrinoless double beta decay guarantees the Majorana nature of neutrinos. We calculate these radiatively generated masses and find that they are many orders of magnitude smaller than the observed neutrino masses and splittings. Thus, some lepton number violating New Physics (which may at tree-level not be related to neutrino masses) may induce Black Box operators which can explain an observed rate of neutrinoless double beta decay. Although these operators guarantee finite Majorana neutrino masses, the smallness of the Black Box contributions implies that other neutrino mass terms (Dirac or Majorana) must exist. If neutrino masses have a significant Majorana contribution then this will become the dominant part of the Black Box operator. However, neutrinos might also be predominantly Dirac particles, while other lepton number violating New Physics dominates neutrinoless double beta decay. Translating an observed rate of neutrinoless double beta decay into neutrino masses would then be completely misleading. Although the principal statement of the Schechter-Valle theorem remains valid, we conclude that the Black Box diagram itself generates radiatively only mass terms which are many orders of magnitude too small to explain neutrino masses. Therefore, other operators must give the leading contributions to neutrino masses, which could be of Dirac or Majorana nature.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor corrections, reference added, matches journal version; v3: typo corrected, physics result and conclusions unchange
