Experiences from semantic web service tutorials

Self-organized dynamics and the transition to turbulence of confined active nematics
We study how confinement transforms the chaotic dynamics of bulk
microtubule-based active nematics into regular spatiotemporal patterns. For
weak confinements, multiple continuously nucleating and annihilating
topological defects self-organize into persistent circular flows of either
handedness. Increasing confinement strength leads to the emergence of distinct
dynamics, in which the slow periodic nucleation of topological defects at the
boundary is superimposed onto a fast procession of a pair of defects. A defect
pair migrates towards the confinement core over multiple rotation cycles, while
the associated nematic director field evolves from a distinct double spiral
towards a nearly circularly symmetric configuration. The collapse of the defect
orbits is punctuated by another boundary-localized nucleation event, that sets
up long-term doubly-periodic dynamics. Comparing experimental data to a
theoretical model of an active nematic, reveals that theory captures the fast
procession of a pair of defects, but not the slow spiral
transformation nor the periodic nucleation of defect pairs. Theory also fails
to predict the emergence of circular flows in the weak confinement regime. The
developed confinement methods are generalized to more complex geometries,
providing a robust microfluidic platform for rationally engineering
two-dimensional autonomous flows
Rituals Alleviate Grieving for Loved Ones, Lovers, and Lotteries
Three experiments explored the impact of mourning rituals after losses—of loved ones, lovers, and lotteries—on mitigating grief. Participants who were directed to reflect on past rituals or who were assigned to complete novel rituals after experiencing losses reported lower levels of grief. Increased feelings of control after rituals mediated the link between use of rituals and reduced grief after losses, and the benefits of rituals accrued not only to individuals who professed a belief in rituals’ effectiveness but also those who did not. Although the specific rituals in which people engage after losses vary widely by culture and religion—and among our participants—our results suggest a common psychological mechanism underlying their effectiveness: regained feelings of control
Matchmaking Promotes Happiness
Four studies document and explore the psychology underlying people's proclivity to connect people to each other—to play "matchmaker." First, Study 1 shows that chronic matchmaking is associated with higher well-being. Studies 2 and 3 show that matching others on the basis of how well they will get along leads to a greater increase in happiness and is more intrinsically rewarding than other tasks (e.g., deciding which people would not get along). Study 4 investigates a moderator of the rewarding nature of matchmaking: the type of connection. We show that bridging ties are relatively more attractive than bonding ties: the more unlikely the match, the more rewarding it is. Taken together, these studies provide correlational and causal evidence for the role of matchmaking in promoting happiness
Feeling Good about Giving: The Benefits (and Costs) of Self-Interested Charitable Behavior
In knowledge-intensive settings such as product or software development, fluid teams of individuals with different sets of experience are tasked with projects that are critical to the success of their organizations. Although building teams from individuals with diverse prior experience is increasingly necessary, prior work examining the relationship between experience and performance fails to find a consistent effect of diversity in experience on performance. The problem is that diversity in experience improves a team's information processing capacity and knowledge base, but also creates coordination challenges. We hypothesize that team familiarity - team members' prior experience working with one another - is one mechanism that helps teams leverage the benefits of diversity in team member experience by alleviating coordination problems that diversity creates. We use detailed project- and individual-level data from an Indian software services firm to examine the effects of team familiarity and diversity in experience on performance for software development projects. We find the interaction of team familiarity and diversity in experience has a complementary effect on a project being delivered on time and on budget. In team familiarity, we identify one mechanism for capturing the performance benefits of diversity in experience and provide insight into how the management of experience accumulation affects team performance.Diversity, Experience, Knowledge, Software, Team Familiarity
