RR Lyrae - Theory vs Observation

    Get PDF
The luminosities, effective temperatures and metallicities that are derived empirically by Kovacs and Jurcsik from the light curves of a large number of globular cluster and field RRab and RRc stars are compared to theoretical RR Lyrae models. The strong luminosity dependence of the empirical blue and red edges (Log L vs Log Teff diagram) is in disagreement with that of both radiative and convective models. A reexamination of the theoretical uncertainties in the modelling leads us to conclude that the disagreement is irreconcilable.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (revised april 2000, revisions relatively minor

Efficacy of temsirolimus in metastatic chromophobe renal cell carcinoma

    Get PDF
<p>Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a histopathologically and molecularly heterogeneous disease with the chromophobe subtype (chRCC) accounting for approximately 5% of all cases. The median overall survival of advanced RCC has improved significantly since the advent of tyrosine kinase inhibitors and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors. However, high-quality evidence for the use of new generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors in patients with advanced chRCC is lacking. Few published case reports have highlighted the use of temsirolimus in chRCC.</p> <p>Case presentation: Here, we report the case of a 36-year-old Caucasian woman with metastatic chRCC with predominantly skeletal metastases who was refractory to sunitinib who demonstrated a durable clinical response to temsirolimus lasting 20 months. We review the available evidence pertaining to the use of new generation molecularly targeted agents, in particular mTOR inhibitors in chRCC and discuss their emerging role in the management of this disease which would aid the oncologists faced with the challenge of treating this rare type of RCC.</p> <p>Conclusion: Conducting randomised clinical trials in this rarer sub-group of patients would be challenging and our case report and the evidence reviewed would guide the physicians to make informed decision regarding the management of these patients.</p&gt

A Magnetic Monopole in Pure SU(2) Gauge Theory

The magnetic monopole in euclidean pure SU(2) gauge theory is investigated using a background field method on the lattice. With Monte Carlo methods we study the mass of the monopole in the full quantum theory. The monopole background under the quantum fluctuations is induced by imposing fixed monopole boundary conditions on the walls of a finite lattice volume. By varying the gauge coupling it is possible to study monopoles with scales from the hadronic scale up to high energies. The results for the monopole mass are consistent with a conjecture we made previously in a realization of the dual superconductor hypothesis of confinement.Comment: 33 pages uufiles-compressed PostScript including (all) 12 figures, preprint numbers ITFA-93-19 (Amsterdam), OUTP-93-21P (Oxford), DFTUZ/93/23 (Zaragoza

The programmed death-1 signaling axis modulates inflammation and LV structure/function in a stress-induced cardiomyopathy model

    Get PDF
The role of immune checkpoints in the setting of tissue injury remains unknown. Using an experimental model of isoproterenol (ISO)-induced stress cardiomyopathy, we show that ISO-induced myocardial injury provokes tissue-autonomous up-regulation of the programmed death-1 (PD-1):programmed death ligand (PD-L) axis in cardiac resident innate immune cells and T cells. PD-1 signaling was responsible for modulating the acute inflammatory response, as well as normalization of impaired left ventricular structure and function after ISO injection. Necrotic cardiac extracts were sufficient to increase the expression of PD-1 in macrophages and T cells in vitro. Viewed together these studies suggest that the PD-1:PD-L signaling axis regulates immune responses to cardiac tissue injury and is important for restoring myocardial homeostasis

Seasonal variability of the warm Atlantic Water layer in the vicinity of the Greenland shelf break

    Get PDF
The warmest water reaching the east and west coast of Greenland is found between 200?m and 600?m. Whilst important for melting Greenland's outlet glaciers, limited winter observations of this layer prohibit determination of its seasonality. To address this, temperature data from Argo profiling floats, a range of sources within the World Ocean Database and unprecedented coverage from marine-mammal borne sensors have been analysed for the period 2002-2011. A significant seasonal range in temperature (~1-2?°C) is found in the warm layer, in contrast to most of the surrounding ocean. The phase of the seasonal cycle exhibits considerable spatial variability, with the warmest water found near the eastern and southwestern shelf-break towards the end of the calendar year. High-resolution ocean model trajectory analysis suggest the timing of the arrival of the year's warmest water is a function of advection time from the subduction site in the Irminger Basin

Can a Logarithmically Running Coupling Mimic a String Tension?

It is shown that a Coulomb potential using a running coupling slightly modified from the perturbative form can produce an interquark potential that appears nearly linear over a large distance range. Recent high-statistics SU(2) lattice gauge theory data fit well to this potential without the need for a linear string-tension term. This calls into question the accuracy of string tension measurements which are based on the assumption of a constant coefficient for the Coulomb term. It also opens up the possibility of obtaining an effectively confining potential from gluon exchange alone.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, two figures not included, available from author. revision - Line lengths fixed so it will tex properl

Cardiac Safety of TGF-β Receptor I Kinase Inhibitor LY2157299 Monohydrate in Cancer Patients in a First-in-Human Dose Study

    Get PDF
Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling plays an important role in the fetal development of cardiovascular organs and in the repair mechanisms of the heart. Hence, inhibitors of the TGF-β signaling pathway require a careful identification of a safe therapeutic window and a comprehensive monitoring of the cardiovascular system. Seventy-nine cancer patients (67 glioma and 12 solid tumor) enrolled in a first-in-human dose study and received the TGF-β inhibitor LY2157299 monohydrate (LY2157299) as monotherapy (n = 53) or in combination with lomustine (n = 26). All patients were monitored using 2D echocardiography/color and Spectral Doppler (2D Echo with Doppler) every 2 months, monthly electrocardiograms, thorax computer tomography scans every 6 months, and monthly serum brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), troponin I, cystatin C, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Administration of LY2157299 was not associated with medically relevant cardiovascular toxicities, including patients treated ≥6 months (n = 13). There were no increases of troponin I, BNP, or hs-CRP or reduction in cystatin C levels, which may have been considered as signs of cardiovascular injury. Blood pressure was generally stable during treatment. Imaging with echocardiography/Doppler showed an increase in mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation by two grades of severity in only one patient with no concurrent clinical symptoms of cardiovascular injury. Overall, this comprehensive cardiovascular monitoring for the TGF-β inhibitor LY2157299 did not detect medically relevant cardiac toxicity and hence supports the evaluation of LY2157299 in future clinical trials

Simultaneous Recordings of Intrinsic Cardiac Nerve Activities and Skin Sympathetic Nerve Activities From Human Patients During the Postoperative Period

Background Intrinsic cardiac nerve activity (ICNA) and skin nerve activity (SKNA) are both associated with cardiac arrhythmias in dogs. Objective The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that ICNA and SKNA correlate with postoperative cardiac arrhythmias in humans. Methods Eleven patients (mean age 60 ± 13 years; 4 women) were enrolled in this study. Electrical signals were simultaneously recorded from electrocardiogram (ECG) patch electrodes on the chest wall and from 2 temporary pacing wires placed during open heart surgery on the left atrial epicardial fat pad. The signals were filtered to display SKNA and ICNA. Premature atrial contractions (PACs) and premature ventricular contractions were determined manually. The SKNA and ICNA of the first 300 minutes of each patient were calculated minute by minute to determine baseline average amplitudes of nerve activities and to determine their correlation with arrhythmia burden. Results We processed 1365 ± 973 minutes of recording per patient. Low-amplitude SKNA and ICNA were present at all time, while the burst discharges were observed much less frequently. Both SKNA and burst ICNA were significantly associated with the onset of PACs and premature ventricular contractions. Baseline average ICNA (aICNA), but not average SKNA, had a significant association with PAC burden. The correlation coefficient (r) between aICNA and PAC burden was 0.78 (P < .01). A patient with the greatest aICNA developed postoperative atrial fibrillation. Conclusion ICNA and SKNA can be recorded from human patients in the postoperative period. The baseline magnitude of ICNA correlates with PAC burden and development of postoperative atrial fibrillation
