Ethnic-Specific Differences in Vitamin D Status Is Associated with Adiposity
BackgroundLow circulating 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations are common in obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) and a negative relationship with body fat distribution has recently been reported. Ethnic-specific differences in body fat distribution have been described with South Asians are reported to have greater visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which could influence circulating 25(OH)D concentrations. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between plasma 25(OH)D, adiposity, and body fat distribution in Europeans and South Asians.Methods/Principal Findings187 Europeans and 192 South Asians were assessed for demographics, anthropometrics, and plasma 25(OH)D concentrations. Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and VAT were quantified by CT scan, and percent body fat by DEXA. Data were assessed by general linear models. South Asians had lower (P<0.001) plasma 25(OH)D concentrations and higher VAT (P = 0.04) than Europeans. Plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were negatively (P<0.05) associated with BMI, waist circumference, percent body fat, total adipose tissue, VAT, and SAT in unadjusted models and negatively (P<0.05) associated with VAT, SAT, and percent body fat after adjusting for BMI, ethnicity, age, and season of blood collection in males and females. When percent body fat, VAT, and SAT were included in the same model, only VAT remained negatively (P<0.05) associated with plasma 25(OH)D concentrations. Ethnicity remained significant in all models (P<0.001).ConclusionCompared to other adipose tissue compartments, VAT may have a distinct role in determining plasma 25(OH)D concentrations, which may account for the lower levels in South Asians
Whole grain intakes in the diets of Irish children and teenagers
A growing body of evidence supports the inclusion of whole grain foods in the diet to help prevent certain chronic diseases. Although much of the research has been conducted in adult cohorts, it is thought that younger populations may also benefit from whole-grain-rich diets. The aim of the present study was to quantify the intake of whole grain in Irish children and teenagers, and assess the major sources of intake. Data used in the present study were from the National Children's Food Survey and the National Teens' Food Survey, which used 7d food diaries to collect data on habitual food and beverage consumption in representative samples of Irish children and teenagers. Results showed that over 90% of children (5-12 years) and over 86% of teenagers (13-17 years) are consumers of whole grain, with mean daily intakes of 18·5 and 23·2g/d, respectively. Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals made the greatest contribution to whole grain intakes for both children and teenagers (59·3 and 44·3%), followed by bread (14·4 and 26·5%), with wheat being the major source of intake, accounting for over 65% of all whole grains consumed. Whole grain consumers had significantly higher intakes of fibre, P and Mg in comparison with non-consumers of whole grain, even though whole grain intakes in this sample were well below the recommendation of three servings or 48g/d. The present study characterises, for the first time, the patterns of whole grain consumption in Irish children and teenagers and shows whole grain intake to be lo
Narrative Bytes : Data-Driven Content Production in Esports
Esports - video games played competitively that are broadcast to large audiences - are a rapidly growing new form of mainstream entertainment. Esports borrow from traditional TV, but are a qualitatively different genre, due to the high flexibility of content capture and availability of detailed gameplay data. Indeed, in esports, there is access to both real-time and historical data about any action taken in the virtual world. This aspect motivates the research presented here, the question asked being: can the information buried deep in such data, unavailable to the human eye, be unlocked and used to improve the live broadcast compilations of the events? In this paper, we present a large-scale case study of a production tool called Echo, which we developed in close collaboration with leading industry stakeholders. Echo uses live and historic match data to detect extraordinary player performances in the popular esport Dota 2, and dynamically translates interesting data points into audience-facing graphics. Echo was deployed at one of the largest yearly Dota 2 tournaments, which was watched by 25 million people. An analysis of 40 hours of video, over 46,000 live chat messages, and feedback of 98 audience members showed that Echo measurably affected the range and quality of storytelling, increased audience engagement, and invoked rich emotional response among viewers
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cross Correlation with Planck maps
We present the temperature power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background
obtained by cross-correlating maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT)
at 148 and 218 GHz with maps from the Planck satellite at 143 and 217 GHz, in
two overlapping regions covering 592 square degrees. We find excellent
agreement between the two datasets at both frequencies, quantified using the
variance of the residuals between the ACT power spectra and the ACTxPlanck
cross-spectra. We use these cross-correlations to calibrate the ACT data at 148
and 218 GHz, to 0.7% and 2% precision respectively. We find no evidence for
anisotropy in the calibration parameter. We compare the Planck 353 GHz power
spectrum with the measured amplitudes of dust and cosmic infrared background
(CIB) of ACT data at 148 and 218 GHz. We also compare planet and point source
measurements from the two experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Precision Epoch of Reionization studies with next-generation CMB experiments
Future arcminute resolution polarization data from ground-based Cosmic
Microwave Background (CMB) observations can be used to estimate the
contribution to the temperature power spectrum from the primary anisotropies
and to uncover the signature of reionization near in the small
angular-scale temperature measurements. Our projections are based on combining
expected small-scale E-mode polarization measurements from Advanced ACTPol in
the range with simulated temperature data from the full Planck
mission in the low and intermediate region, . We show that
the six basic cosmological parameters determined from this combination of data
will predict the underlying primordial temperature spectrum at high multipoles
to better than accuracy. Assuming an efficient cleaning from
multi-frequency channels of most foregrounds in the temperature data, we
investigate the sensitivity to the only residual secondary component, the
kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) term. The CMB polarization is used to break
degeneracies between primordial and secondary terms present in temperature and,
in effect, to remove from the temperature data all but the residual kSZ term.
We estimate a detection of the diffuse homogeneous kSZ signal from
expected AdvACT temperature data at , leading to a measurement of
the amplitude of matter density fluctuations, , at precision.
Alternatively, by exploring the reionization signal encoded in the patchy kSZ
measurements, we bound the time and duration of the reionization with
and . We find that
these constraints degrade rapidly with large beam sizes, which highlights the
importance of arcminute-scale resolution for future CMB surveys.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: A Measurement of the Thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Using the Skewness of the CMB Temperature Distribution
We present a detection of the unnormalized skewness induced by the
thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in filtered Atacama Cosmology Telescope
(ACT) 148 GHz cosmic microwave background temperature maps. Contamination due
to infrared and radio sources is minimized by template subtraction of resolved
sources and by constructing a mask using outlying values in the 218 GHz
(tSZ-null) ACT maps. We measure = -31 +- 6 \mu K^3 (measurement error
only) or +- 14 \mu K^3 (including cosmic variance error) in the filtered ACT
data, a 5-sigma detection. We show that the skewness is a sensitive probe of
sigma_8, and use analytic calculations and tSZ simulations to obtain
cosmological constraints from this measurement. From this signal alone we infer
a value of sigma_8= 0.79 +0.03 -0.03 (68 % C.L.) +0.06 -0.06 (95 % C.L.). Our
results demonstrate that measurements of non-Gaussianity can be a useful method
for characterizing the tSZ effect and extracting the underlying cosmological
information.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Replaced with version accepted by Phys. Rev. D,

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: The LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts
We present a multi-wavelength analysis of eleven Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect
(SZE)-selected galaxy clusters (ten with new data) from the Atacama Cosmology
Telescope (ACT) southern survey. We have obtained new imaging from the Large
APEX Bolometer Camera (345GHz; LABOCA) on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment
(APEX) telescope, the Australia Telescope Compact Array (2.1GHz; ATCA), and the
Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (250, 350, and ;
SPIRE) on the Herschel Space Observatory. Spatially-resolved 345GHz SZE
increments with integrated S/N > 5 are found in six clusters. We compute 2.1GHz
number counts as a function of cluster-centric radius and find significant
enhancements in the counts of bright sources at projected radii . By extrapolating in frequency, we predict that the combined
signals from 2.1GHz-selected radio sources and 345GHz-selected SMGs contaminate
the 148GHz SZE decrement signal by ~5% and the 345GHz SZE increment by ~18%.
After removing radio source and SMG emission from the SZE signals, we use ACT,
LABOCA, and (in some cases) new Herschel SPIRE imaging to place constraints on
the clusters' peculiar velocities. The sample's average peculiar velocity
relative to the cosmic microwave background is .Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical

Cosmological Parameters from Pre-Planck CMB Measurements
Recent data from the WMAP, ACT and SPT experiments provide precise
measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature power spectrum over
a wide range of angular scales. The combination of these observations is well
fit by the standard, spatially flat LCDM cosmological model, constraining six
free parameters to within a few percent. The scalar spectral index, n_s =
0.9690 +/- 0.0089, is less than unity at the 3.6 sigma level, consistent with
simple models of inflation. The damping tail of the power spectrum at high
resolution, combined with the amplitude of gravitational lensing measured by
ACT and SPT, constrains the effective number of relativistic species to be
N_eff = 3.28 +/- 0.40, in agreement with the standard model's three species of
light neutrinos.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
