    Temperature Dependence Of The Electrical Resistivity Of LaxLu1-xAs

    We investigate the temperature-dependent resistivity of single-crystalline films of LaxLu1-xAs over the 5-300 K range. The resistivity was separated into lattice, carrier and impurity scattering regions. The effect of impurity scattering is significant below 20 K, while carrier scattering dominates at 20-80 K and lattice scattering dominates above 80 K. All scattering regions show strong dependence on the La content of the films. While the resistivity of 600 nm LuAs films agree well with the reported bulk resistivity values, 3 nm films possessed significantly higher resistivity, suggesting that interfacial roughness significantly impacts the scattering of carriers at the nanoscale limit.     Complementary algorithms for graphs and percolation

    A pair of complementary algorithms are presented. One of the pair is a fast method for connecting graphs with an edge. The other is a fast method for removing edges from a graph. Both algorithms employ the same tree based graph representation and so, in concert, can arbitrarily modify any graph. Since the clusters of a percolation model may be described as simple connected graphs, an efficient Monte Carlo scheme can be constructed that uses the algorithms to sweep the occupation probability back and forth between two turning points. This approach concentrates computational sampling time within a region of interest. A high precision value of pc = 0.59274603(9) was thus obtained, by Mersenne twister, for the two dimensional square site percolation threshold.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, poster version presented at statphys23 (2007

    Determination of masses and other properties of extra-solar planetary systems with more than one planet

    Recent analysis of the Doppler shift oscillations of the light from extra-solar planetary systems indicate that some of these systems have more than one large planet. In this case it has been shown that the masses of these planets can be determined without the familiar ambiguity due to the unknown inclination angle of the plane of the orbit of the central star provided, however, that its mass is known. A method is presented here which determines also a lower limit to the mass of this star from these observations.     Interfacial mixing in heteroepitaxial growth

    We investigate the growth of a film of some element B on a substrate made of another substrance A in a model of molecular beam epitaxy. A vertical exchange mechanism allows the A-atoms to stay on the growing surface with a certain probability. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations as well as scaling arguments, the incorporation of the A's into the growing B-layer is investigated. Moreover we develop a rate equation theory for this process. In the limit of perfect layer-by-layer growth, the density of A-atoms decays in the B-film like the inverse squared distance from the interface. The power law is cut off exponentially at a characteristic thickness of the interdiffusion zone that depends on the rate of exchange of a B-adatom with an A-atom in the surface and on the system size. Kinetic roughening changes the exponents. Then the thickness of the interdiffusion zone is determined by the diffusion length.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

    Evaluating pharmacological models of high and low anxiety in sheep

    New tests of animal affect and welfare require validation in subjects experiencing putatively different states. Pharmacological manipulations of affective state are advantageous because they can be administered in a standardised fashion, and the duration of their action can be established and tailored to suit the length of a particular test. To this end, the current study aimed to evaluate a pharmacological model of high and low anxiety in an important agricultural and laboratory species, the sheep. Thirty-five 8-month-old female sheep received either an intramuscular injection of the putatively anxiogenic drug 1-(m-chlorophenyl)piperazine (mCPP; 1 mg/kg; n = 12), an intravenous injection of the putatively anxiolytic drug diazepam (0.1 mg/kg; n = 12), or acted as a control (saline intramuscular injection n = 11). Thirty minutes after the treatments, sheep were individually exposed to a variety of tests assessing their general movement, performance in a ‘runway task’ (moving down a raceway for a food reward), response to startle, and behaviour in isolation. A test to assess feeding motivation was performed 2 days later following administration of the drugs to the same animals in the same manner. The mCPP sheep had poorer performance in the two runway tasks (6.8 and 7.7 × slower respectively than control group; p < 0.001), a greater startle response (1.4 vs. 0.6; p = 0.02), a higher level of movement during isolation (9.1 steps vs. 5.4; p < 0.001), and a lower feeding motivation (1.8 × slower; p < 0.001) than the control group, all of which act as indicators of anxiety. These results show that mCPP is an effective pharmacological model of high anxiety in sheep. Comparatively, the sheep treated with diazepam did not display any differences compared to the control sheep. Thus we suggest that mCPP is an effective treatment to validate future tests aimed at assessing anxiety in sheep, and that future studies should include other subtle indicators of positive affective states, as well as dosage studies, so conclusions on the efficacy of diazepam as a model of low anxiety can be drawn

    Spectral density analysis of time correlation functions in lattice QCD using the maximum entropy method

    We study various aspects of extracting spectral information from time correlation functions of lattice QCD by means of Bayesian inference with an entropic prior, the maximum entropy method (MEM). Correlator functions of a heavy-light meson-meson system serve as a repository for lattice data with diverse statistical quality. Attention is given to spectral mass density functions, inferred from the data, and their dependence on the parameters of the MEM.
