    FAUST Observations in the Fourth Galactic Quadrant

    We analyze UV observations with FAUST of four sky fields in the general direction of the fourth Galactic quadrant, in which we detect 777 UV sources. This is ~50% more than detected originally by Bowyer et al (1995). We discuss the source detection process and the identification of UV sources with optical counterparts. For the first time in this project we use ground-based objective-prism information for two of the fields, to select the best-matching optical objects with which to identify the UV sources. Using this, and correlations with existing catalogs, we present reliable identifications for \~75% of the sources. Most of the remaining sources have assigned optical counterparts, but lacking additional information we offer only plausible identification. We discuss the types of objects found, and compare the observed population with predictions of our UV Galaxy model.Comment: Dedicated to the memory of Barry Lasker.     Hidden Subluminous sd/wd among the FAUST UV sources toward OPHIUCHUS

    A UV image in the direction of Ophiuchus, obtained with the FAUST instrument is analysed. Suitable candidates as unrecognized subluminous stars are selected comparing the observed UV flux to the predicted one. The uv-excess objects were observed at the 1.0 m Wise telescope. This method yields to the detection of eight broad Balmer lines objects. Six are classified as sds and two wds, comparing the Hbeta line profile with that of stellar model atmospheres.Comment: 2 pages, including 2 figures.     Representation of Reward Feedback in Primate Auditory Cortex

    It is well established that auditory cortex is plastic on different time scales and that this plasticity is driven by the reinforcement that is used to motivate subjects to learn or to perform an auditory task. Motivated by these findings, we study in detail properties of neuronal firing in auditory cortex that is related to reward feedback. We recorded from the auditory cortex of two monkeys while they were performing an auditory categorization task. Monkeys listened to a sequence of tones and had to signal when the frequency of adjacent tones stepped in downward direction, irrespective of the tone frequency and step size. Correct identifications were rewarded with either a large or a small amount of water. The size of reward depended on the monkeys’ performance in the previous trial: it was large after a correct trial and small after an incorrect trial. The rewards served to maintain task performance. During task performance we found three successive periods of neuronal firing in auditory cortex that reflected (1) the reward expectancy for each trial, (2) the reward-size received, and (3) the mismatch between the expected and delivered reward. These results, together with control experiments suggest that auditory cortex receives reward feedback that could be used to adapt auditory cortex to task requirements. Additionally, the results presented here extend previous observations of non-auditory roles of auditory cortex and shows that auditory cortex is even more cognitively influenced than lately recognized

    The haloes and environments of nearby galaxies (HERON) -- III. A 45 kpc spiral structure in the GLSB galaxy UGC 4599

    We use a 0.7-m telescope in the framework of the Halos and Environments of Nearby Galaxies (HERON) survey to probe low surface brightness structures in nearby galaxies. One of our targets, UGC 4599, is usually classified as an early-type galaxy surrounded by a blue ring making it a potential Hoag's Object analog. Prior photometric studies of UGC 4599 were focused on its bright core and the blue ring. However, the HERON survey allows us to study its faint extended regions. With an eight hour integration, we detect an extremely faint outer disk with an extrapolated central surface brightness of μ0,d(r)=25.5\mu_\mathrm{0,d}(r)=25.5 mag arcsec2^{-2} down to 31 mag arcsec2^{-2} and a scale length of 15 kpc. We identify two distinct spiral arms of pitch angle ~6{\deg} surrounding the ring. The spiral arms are detected out to ~45 kpc in radius and the faint disk continues to ~70 kpc. These features are also seen in the GALEX FUV and NUV bands, in a deep u-band image from the 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope (which reveals inner spiral structure emerging from the core), and in HI. We compare this galaxy to ordinary spiral and elliptical galaxies, giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxies, and Hoag's Object itself using several standard galaxy scaling relations. We conclude that the pseudobulge and disk properties of UGC 4599 significantly differ from those of Hoag's Object and of normal galaxies, pointing toward a GLSB galaxy nature and filamentary accretion of gas to generate its outer disk.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The Halos and Environments of Nearby Galaxies (HERON) Survey

    We have used dedicated 0.7m telescopes in California and Israel to image the halos of ~200 galaxies in the Local Volume to 29 mag/sq arcsec, the sample mainly drawn from the 2MASS Large Galaxy Atlas (LGA). We supplement the LGA sample with dwarf galaxies and more distant giant ellipticals. Low surface brightness halos exceeding 50 kpc in diameter are found only in galaxies more luminous than L* and classic interaction signatures are relatively infrequent. Halo diameter is correlated with total galaxy luminosity. Extended low surface brightness halos are present even in galaxies as faint as M_V=-18. Edge-on galaxies with boxy bulges tend to lack extended spheroidal halos, while those with large classical bulges exhibit extended round halos, supporting the notions that boxy or barlike bulges originate from disks. Most face-on spiral galaxies present features that appear to be irregular extensions of spiral arms, although rare cases show smooth boundaries with no sign of star formation. Although we serendipitously discovered a dwarf galaxy undergoing tidal disruption in the halo of NGC 4449, we found no comparable examples in our general survey. A search for similar examples in the Local Volume identified hcc087, a tidally disrupting dwarf galaxy in the Hercules Cluster, but we do not confirm an anomalously large half-light radius reported for the dwarf VCC 1661

    CAVE: An Open-Source Tool for Combined Analysis of Head-Mounted Calcium Imaging and Behavior in MATLAB

    Calcium imaging in freely behaving rodents using head-mounted miniature microscopes is currently becoming an increasingly popular technique in neuroscience. Due to the large amounts of complex data that the technique produces, user friendly software is needed for quick and efficient processing. Here, we present a new tool for analyzing calcium imaging data from head-mounted microscopes together with simultaneously acquired behavioral data: CAVE (Calcium ActiVity Explorer). CAVE bundles a unique set of algorithms specifically tailored to the analysis of single-photon imaging data from awake behaving animals including efficient motion correction and automatic ROI selection with manual audit and refinement. For behavioral analysis, CAVE can automatically track animal position and orientation. Individual behavioral epochs and external events can then be analyzed in correlation to calcium imaging and tracking data. Our program is written in MATLAB, the source code is open source and particularly focuses on providing a streamlined workflow for novice users while also retaining detailed configuration options for advanced users. We evaluate the performance of CAVE by investigating neural activity in hippocampus and somatosensory cortex. The fast analysis provided by CAVE allowed us to track activity in a large set of animals over the course of several months during exploration behavior, detailing the properties of onset and offset of observable activity and the visible cells per imaging location

    FAUST observations of UV sources toward the Virgo cluster

    We analyze three UV images covering a 100 square degree field toward the Virgo cluster,obtained by the FAUST space experiment. We detect 191 sources to a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 and identify 94% of them. Most sources have optical counterparts in existing catalogs and about half are identified as galaxies. Some sources with no listed counterpart were observed at the Wise Observatory. We present the results of low resolution visible spectrophotometry and discuss the foreground 101 stellar sources and the 76 detected galaxies, both in the cluster and in the fore- or background. We derive conclusions on star-formation properties of galaxies and on the total UV flux from discrete and diffuse sources in the cluster. We test for the presence of intra-cluster dust, determine the clustering properties of UV emitting galaxies, and derive the UV luminosity function of Virgo galaxies.Comment: 60 pages, LaTeX (including 5 Tables) + 8 PostScript figures.     Enlarging the Nosological Spectrum of Hereditary Diffuse Leukoencephalopathy with Axonal Spheroids (HDLS)

    Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids (HDLS) is an autosomal dominant disease clinically characterized by cognitive decline, personality changes, motor impairment, parkinsonism and seizures. Recently, mutations in the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R) gene have been shown to be associated with HDLS. We report clinical, neuropathological and molecular genetic findings of patients from a new family with a mutation in the CSF1R gene. Disease onset was earlier and disease progression was more rapid compared with previously reported patients. Psychiatric symptoms including personality changes, alcohol abuse and severe depression were the first symptoms in male patients. In the index, female patient, the initial symptom was cognitive decline. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral, confluent white matter lesions in the cerebrum. Stereotactic biopsy revealed loss of myelin and microglial activation as well as macrophage infiltration of the parenchyma. Numerous axonal swellings and spheroids were present. Ultrastructural analysis revealed pigment-containing macrophages. Axonal swellings were detected by electron microscopy not only in the central nervous system (CNS) but also in skin nerves. We identified a heterozygous mutation (c.2330G>A, p.R777Q) in the CSF1R gene. Through this report, we aim to enlarge the nosological spectrum of HDLS, providing new clinical descriptions as well as novel neuropathological findings from the peripheral nervous system

    Comparison of Pittsburgh compound B and florbetapir in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.

    IntroductionQuantitative in vivo measurement of brain amyloid burden is important for both research and clinical purposes. However, the existence of multiple imaging tracers presents challenges to the interpretation of such measurements. This study presents a direct comparison of Pittsburgh compound B-based and florbetapir-based amyloid imaging in the same participants from two independent cohorts using a crossover design.MethodsPittsburgh compound B and florbetapir amyloid PET imaging data from three different cohorts were analyzed using previously established pipelines to obtain global amyloid burden measurements. These measurements were converted to the Centiloid scale to allow fair comparison between the two tracers. The mean and inter-individual variability of the two tracers were compared using multivariate linear models both cross-sectionally and longitudinally.ResultsGlobal amyloid burden measured using the two tracers were strongly correlated in both cohorts. However, higher variability was observed when florbetapir was used as the imaging tracer. The variability may be partially caused by white matter signal as partial volume correction reduces the variability and improves the correlations between the two tracers. Amyloid burden measured using both tracers was found to be in association with clinical and psychometric measurements. Longitudinal comparison of the two tracers was also performed in similar but separate cohorts whose baseline amyloid load was considered elevated (i.e., amyloid positive). No significant difference was detected in the average annualized rate of change measurements made with these two tracers.DiscussionAlthough the amyloid burden measurements were quite similar using these two tracers as expected, difference was observable even after conversion into the Centiloid scale. Further investigation is warranted to identify optimal strategies to harmonize amyloid imaging data acquired using different tracers
