    Shaped Charge Jet Penetration of Alon® Ceramic Assessed by Proton Radiography and Computational Simulations

    AbstractThis work describes the use of proton radiography and continuum simulations to investigate the mechanics of a copper jet penetrating unconfined ALON® transparent ceramic. Use of proton radiography enabled characterization of the jet and ceramic material at 21 time steps, in situ, throughout the penetration process. These radiographs provide time-evolution data pertaining to the material densities, cavity growth, and material failure. The data were compared to legacy analytical penetration models and to a simulation of the event computed using a continuum multi-physics code. These comparisons revealed additional insights into the penetration mechanics as well as strengths and weaknesses of the computational algorithms and material models used in the simulations

    Greece’s Three-Act Tragedy:A Simple Model of Grexit vs. Staying Afloat inside the Single Currency Area

    Against the backdrop of the Greek three-act tragedy, we present a theoretical framework for studying Greece’s recent debt and currency crisis. The model is built on two essential blocks: first, erratic macroeconomic policymaking in Greece is described using a stochastic regimeswitching model; second, the euro area governments’ responses to uncertain macroeconomic policies in Greece are considered. The model’s mechanism and assumptions allow either for a Grexit from the euro area or, conversely, the avoidance of Greece’s default against its creditors. The model also offers useful guidance to understand key drivers of the long-winded negotiations between the Syiza government and the euro area governments

    Science and Ideology in Economic, Political, and Social Thought

    This paper has two sources: One is my own research in three broad areas: business cycles, economic measurement and social choice. In all of these fields I attempted to apply the basic precepts of the scientific method as it is understood in the natural sciences. I found that my effort at using natural science methods in economics was met with little understanding and often considerable hostility. I found economics to be driven less by common sense and empirical evidence, then by various ideologies that exhibited either a political or a methodological bias, or both. This brings me to the second source: Several books have appeared recently that describe in historical terms the ideological forces that have shaped either the direct areas in which I worked, or a broader background. These books taught me that the ideological forces in the social sciences are even stronger than I imagined on the basis of my own experiences. The scientific method is the antipode to ideology. I feel that the scientific work that I have done on specific, long standing and fundamental problems in economics and political science have given me additional insights into the destructive role of ideology beyond the history of thought orientation of the works I will be discussing

    The Price of Corporate Social Responsibility: The Case of Black Economic Empowerment Transactions in South Africa

    Since the demise of apartheid in South Africa, corporations have been encouraged to participate in the governmental goal of increasing corporate ownership by the black majority population. One vehicle that has arisen to help facilitate an increase in corporate ownership has been black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions. BEE transactions are essentially private placements of equity. Firms that have taken this socially activist position of selling portions of their equity, usually at a substantial discount, to black empowerment groups have received positive media attention in the name of 'good corporate citizenship.' This study investigates the market performance of these BEE transactions, specifically addressing three questions. The first question is whether BEE transactions create or destroy wealth. To address this question we use an event study methodology to calculate the cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) associated with public announcements of BEE transactions. The second question is whether specific types of BEE transactions did better or worse than others. We address this question by analyzing the cross-sectional variation in the CARs associated with public announcements of BEE transactions. The third question is whether firms that engage in BEE transactions experience negative post-announcement price performance. This last question is motivated by popular press accounts of the exploitation of black empowerment groups by white-owned South African corporations. To address this question, we test whether BEE transactions have benefited white corporate South Africa at the expense of the participating black empowerment groups

    The Introduction of the Euro and its Effects on Investment Decisions

    In this paper we examine changes on investment decisions induced by the introduction of the Euro. There are two potential sources of portfolio reallocation. First, the introduction of the Euro diminished exchange rate risks within the EMU region, which relieved European investors from currency risk associated with intra-EMU investments. Second, monetary policy has been bundled within one single institution, which increased the correlation of different national stock and bond market returns. We test for structural breaks in the portfolio holdings of German investors and estimate a market model in the latter in order to account for the two described effects. We observe a significant decrease in national and an significant increase in intra-EMU as well as US investments. Therefore, the establishment of the EMU led to a decrease of investment home bias

    The late blight disease (Phytophthora infestans) is still regarded as an important yieldlimiting factor in the organic potato- production. Therefore the use of copper forms a crucial basis of the yield and quality- assurance. However, the copper enchrichment problems in the soil and their subsequently negative effects on non-target organisms appear to be on reason that a reduction of the copper-use is inevitable. For this reason, different strategies are developed for controlling the secondary-attack in the framework of the research project Ă–KO-SIMPHYT. This project aims to achieve a sufficient control of the disease with less copper as possible.     Hypertrophy in Mesenchymal Stem Cell Chondrogenesis: Effect of TGF-β Isoforms and Chondrogenic Conditioning

    Induction of chondrogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with TGF-β leads to a hypertrophic phenotype. The hypertrophic maturation of the chondrocytes is dependent on the timed removal of TGF-β and sensitive to hypertrophy-promoting agents in vitro. In this study, we have investigated whether TGF-β3, which has been shown to be more prochondrogenic compared to TGF-β1, similarly enhances terminal differentiation in an in vitro hypertrophy model of chondrogenically differentiating MSCs. In addition, we tested the impact of the time of chondrogenic conditioning on the enhancement of hypertrophy. MSCs were chondrogenically differentiated in pellet culture in medium containing TGF-β1 or TGF-β3. After 2 or 4 weeks, chondrogenic medium was switched to hypertrophy-inducing medium for 2 weeks. Aggregates were analyzed histologically and biochemically on days 14, 28 and 42. The switch to hypertrophy medium after 14 days induced hypertrophic cell morphology and significant increase in alkaline phosphatase activity compared to the chondrogenesis only control using both TGF-β1 and TGF-β3. After 28 days predifferentiation, differences between hypertrophic and control groups diminished compared to 14 days predifferentiation. In conclusion, chondrogenic conditioning with both TGF-β isoforms similarly induced hypertrophy in our experiment and allowed the enhancement of the hypertrophic chondrocyte phenotype by hypertrophic medium. Enhancement of hypertrophy was seen more clearly after the shorter chondrogenic conditioning. Therefore, to utilize this experimental model as a tool to study hypertrophy in MSC chondrogenesis, a predifferentiation period of 14 days is recommended
