    Solute Effects on Growth Restriction in Dilute Ferrous Alloys

    The effect of dilute solute additions on growth restriction in binary ferrous alloys has been assessed by means of the heuristic growth restriction parameter (β) modelling framework (Fan et al. in Acta Mater. 152, 248–257, 2018). The CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) methodology (Kaufman and Bernstein in Computer Calculation of Phase Diagrams, 1970) has been used to calculate β values from the liquidus slope m and the equilibrium distribution coefficient k values, at first approximation, in conjunction with the liquid-to-solid fraction to obtain true β values. Critical solute concentrations, below which solidification becomes partitionless, have also been calculated. Among 23 dilute binary ferrous alloy systems investigated, the five most efficient solutes on grain refinement are B, Y, O, S and C. A negative correlation, or inverse relationship, was observed between the true β values and the grain size values obtained from a study on experimental multicomponent dilute ferrous alloy systems (Li et al. in Metall. Mater. Trans. A 49 A, 2235–2247, 2018)

    Young drivers’ pedestrian anti-collision braking operation data modelling for ADAS development

    Smart cities and smart mobility come from intelligent systems designed by humans. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is contributing significantly to the development of these systems, and the automotive industry is the most prominent example of "smart" technology entering the market: there are Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Radar/LIDAR detection units and camera-based Computer Vision systems that can assess driving conditions. Actually, these technologies have become consumer goods and services in mass-produced vehicles to provide human drivers with tools for a more comfortable and safer driving. Nevertheless, they need to be further improved for progress in the transition to fully automated driving or simply to increase vehicle automation levels. To this end, it becomes imperative to accurately predict driver’s decisions, model human driving behaviors, and introduce more accurate risk assessment metrics. This paper presents a system that can learn to predict the future braking behavior of a driver in a typically urban vehicle-pedestrian conflict, i.e., when a pedestrian enters a zebra crossing from the curb and a vehicle is approaching. The algorithm proposes a sequential prediction of relevant operational indicators that continuously describe the encounter process. A car driving simulator was used to collect reliable data on braking behaviours of a cohort of 68 licensed university students, who faced the same urban scenario. The vehicle speed, steering wheel angle, and pedal activity were recorded as the participants approached the crosswalk, along with the azimuth angle of the pedestrian and the relative longitudinal distance between the vehicle and the pedestrian: the proposed system employs the vehicle information as human driving decisions and the pedestrian information as explanatory variables of the environmental state. In fact, the pedestrian’s polar coordinates are usually calculated by an on-board millimeter-wave radar which is typically used to perceive the environment around a vehicle. All mentioned information is represented in the form of time series data and is used to train a recurrent neural network in a supervised machine learning process. The main purpose of this research is to define a system of behavioral profiles in non-collision conditions that could be used for enhancing the existing intelligent driving systems, e.g., to reduce the number of warnings when the driver is not on a collision course with a pedestrian.     Alternative finance in bank-firm relationship: how does board structure affect the cost of debt?

    In this paper, we examine the relationship between alternative finance and board structure on the cost of debt for firms, focusing on the unique effects of differing board characteristics. Using a dataset of 176 European listed companies observed annually from 2013 to 2022, we dissect this relationship through several hypotheses considering factors such as the supply of alternative finance, board gender composition, age, expertise, and board turnover. Our findings reveal that increased alternative finance credit supply escalates the cost of debt, especially for firms with lower ESG scores. Firms with young boards, boards specialized in economics or low, and board turnover also experience a rise in borrowing costs with increasing of alternative finance. Through a pooling 2SLS model, we provide robust evidence about the interplay of alternative finance and varying board structures on the cost of debt. This research clarifies the intricacies of bank-firm relationships in alternative finance and holds significant implications for supervisory authorities, banks, and policymakers. It underscores the necessity of good corporate governance in managing the cost implications of alternative finance. It calls for tailored risk assessment strategies, conducive regulatory frameworks, and vigilant supervisory approaches to create a resilient financial ecosystem where alternative finance can thrive without inordinately inflating the cost of debt

    The effect of dilute solute additions on growth restriction in binary Cu alloys has been assessed at different degrees of superheat. Columnar grain length values from Northcott\u2019s work (Northcott in J Inst Metals 62:101-136, 1938) for binary Cu alloys were plotted against the corresponding undercooling parameter (P), the reciprocal of the conventional (Qconv.) and true (Qtrue) growth restriction factor (Schmid-Fetzer and Kozlov in Acta Mater 59(15):6133-6144, 2011) values. It was found that there was no correlation between the columnar grain length values and P, 1/Qconv. and 1/Qtrue values for different solutes and cast at the same degree of superheat. Unlike P, Qconv., and Qtrue values, the heuristic growth restriction parameter (\u3b2) (Fan et al. in Acta Mater 152, 248-257, 2018) modeling framework in conjunction with the critical solute content (C*) for growth restriction fitted well to binary Cu alloys

    Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of outpatient services: A scoping review of interventions at the primary-secondary care interface

Our aim was to review the literature on strategies involving primary care that are designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of outpatient services. Methods: A scoping review to update a review published in 2006. We conducted a systematic literature search and qualitative evidence synthesis of studies across five intervention domains: transfer of services from hospital to primary care; relocation of hospital services to primary care; joint working between primary care practitioners and specialists; interventions to change the referral behaviour of primary care practitioners and interventions to change patient behaviour. Results: The 183 studies published since 2005, taken with the findings of the previous review, suggest that transfer of services from secondary to primary care and strategies aimed at changing referral behaviour of primary care clinicians can be effective in reducing outpatient referrals and in increasing the appropriateness of referrals. Availability of specialist advice to primary care practitioners by email or phone and use of store-and-forward telemedicine also show potential for reducing outpatient referrals and hence reducing costs. There was little evidence of a beneficial effect of relocation of specialists to primary care, or joint primary/secondary care management of patients on outpatient referrals. Across all intervention categories there was little evidence available on cost-effectiveness. Conclusions: There are a number of promising interventions which may improve the effectiveness and efficiency of outpatient services, including making it easier for primary care clinicians and specialists to discuss patients by email or phone. There remain substantial gaps in the evidence, particularly on cost-effectiveness, and new interventions should continue to be evaluated as they are implemented more widely.     In this study a novel procedure is presented for an efficient development of predictive models of road pavement asphalt concretes mechanical characteristics and volumetric properties, using shallow artificial neural networks. The problems of properly assessing the actual generalization feature of a model and avoiding the effects induced by a fixed training-test data split are addressed. Since machine learning models require a careful definition of the network hyperparameters, a Bayesian approach is presented to set the optimal model configuration.     Thyroglossal Duct Lipoma: A Case Report and a Systematic Review of the Literature for Its Management

    Thyroglossal duct (TGD) remnants in the form of cysts or fistulas usually present as midline neck masses and they are removed along with the central body of the hyoid bone (Sistrunk’s procedure). For other pathologies associated with the TGD tract, the latter operation might be not necessary. In the present report, a case of a TGD lipoma is presented and a systematic review of the pertinent literature was performed. We present the case of a 57-year-old woman with a pathologically confirmed TGD lipoma who underwent transcervical excision without resecting the hyoid bone. Recurrence was not observed after six months of follow-up. The literature search revealed only one other case of TGD lipoma and controversies are addressed. TGD lipoma is an exceedingly rare entity whose management might avoid hyoid bone excision

    The Left Ventricular Dysfunction Questionnaire: Italian translation and validation.

    Patients affected by heart failure have a compromised quality of life (QOL) and in the last few years "health related quality of life" has become an important outcome indicator for the evaluation of heart failure treatment. Methods: Translation into Italian of the Left Ventricular Dysfunction Questionnaire (LVD-36), a new, 36-item, disease-specific health status instrument for patients with congestive heart failure, and its subsequent validation by administration to 50 consecutive patients in our heart failure outpatient clinic. The Italian LVD-36 was compared to the "The Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire" (MLHF). Results: The Italian version of the LVD-36 correlates well with MLHF for ejection fraction (EF), NYHA class I and II, etiology and therapy. Since, however, the LVD-36 has only one domain, it may be able to offer more synthetic information than MLHF about patients' status. Conclusions: The Italian version of the LVD-36 appears to be a reliable instrument for assessing patients' QOL and the degree of limitations imposed on them by the disease. It is short, clear and easy to complete. In patients with heart failure the LVD-36 correlates well with the MLHF and may be considered a new disease- specific instrument to estimate changes in health status, and an useful support in optimizing therapeutic options
