    Effect of Homogenization Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Property Evolutions of As-Cast Al-Cu Alloy during High-Pressure Torsion

    As-cast and homogenization treated as-cast Al-Cu (3 mass% Cu) alloy samples were processed via high-pressure torsion (HPT) under an applied pressure of 8 GPa with 5 revolutions at room temperature. Microstructure, mechanical properties, and fracture surface morphology of the HPT-processed Al-Cu were investigated, demonstrating that the HPT process successfully resulted in distinct grain refinements in both samples. Significant improvements in the microhardness, tensile properties, and deformation homogeneity due to fine grains, high grain boundary misorientation angle, and homogeneous distribution of the theta phase were achieved after the HPT process of the homogenized sample. The homogenization treatment of the as-cast Al-Cu has a significant effect on the fracture surface morphology and fracture mode of the HPT-processed samples.X1110Ysciescopu

    Incorporating topological information for predicting robust cancer subnetwork markers in human protein-protein interaction network

    BACKGROUND: Discovering robust markers for cancer prognosis based on gene expression data is an important yet challenging problem in translational bioinformatics. By integrating additional information in biological pathways or a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, we can find better biomarkers that lead to more accurate and reproducible prognostic predictions. In fact, recent studies have shown that, “modular markers,” that integrate multiple genes with potential interactions can improve disease classification and also provide better understanding of the disease mechanisms. RESULTS: In this work, we propose a novel algorithm for finding robust and effective subnetwork markers that can accurately predict cancer prognosis. To simultaneously discover multiple synergistic subnetwork markers in a human PPI network, we build on our previous work that uses affinity propagation, an efficient clustering algorithm based on a message-passing scheme. Using affinity propagation, we identify potential subnetwork markers that consist of discriminative genes that display coherent expression patterns and whose protein products are closely located on the PPI network. Furthermore, we incorporate the topological information from the PPI network to evaluate the potential of a given set of proteins to be involved in a functional module. Primarily, we adopt widely made assumptions that densely connected subnetworks may likely be potential functional modules and that proteins that are not directly connected but interact with similar sets of other proteins may share similar functionalities. CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating topological attributes based on these assumptions can enhance the prediction of potential subnetwork markers. We evaluate the performance of the proposed subnetwork marker identification method by performing classification experiments using multiple independent breast cancer gene expression datasets and PPI networks. We show that our method leads to the discovery of robust subnetwork markers that can improve cancer classification.     A new small-bodied azhdarchoid pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of England and its implications for pterosaur anatomy, diversity and phylogeny

    BACKGROUND: Pterosaurs have been known from the Cretaceous sediments of the Isle of Wight (southern England, United Kingdom) since 1870. We describe the three-dimensional pelvic girdle and associated vertebrae of a small near-adult pterodactyloid from the Atherfield Clay Formation (lower Aptian, Lower Cretaceous). Despite acknowledged variation in the pterosaur pelvis, previous studies have not adequately sampled or incorporated pelvic characters into phylogenetic analyses. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The new specimen represents the new taxon Vectidraco daisymorrisae gen. et sp. nov., diagnosed by the presence of a concavity posterodorsal to the acetabulum and the form of its postacetabular process on the ilium. Several characters suggest that Vectidraco belongs to Azhdarchoidea. We constructed a pelvis-only phylogenetic analysis to test whether the pterosaur pelvis carries a useful phylogenetic signal. Resolution in recovered trees was poor, but they approximately matched trees recovered from analyses of total evidence. We also added Vectidraco and our pelvic characters to an existing total-evidence matrix for pterosaurs. Both analyses recovered Vectidraco within Azhdarchoidea. CONCLUSIONS/ SIGNIFICANCE: The Lower Cretaceous strata of western Europe have yielded members of several pterosaur lineages, but Aptian pterosaurs from western Europe are rare. With a pelvis length of 40 mm, the new animal would have had a total length of c. 350 mm, and a wingspan of c. 750 mm. Barremian and Aptian pterodactyloids from western Europe show that small-bodied azhdarchoids lived alongside ornithocheirids and istiodactylids. This assemblage is similar in terms of which lineages are represented to the coeval beds of Liaoning, China; however, the number of species and specimens present at Liaoning is much higher. While the general phylogenetic composition of western European and Chinese communities appear to have been approximately similar, the differences may be due to different palaeoenvironmental and depositional settings. The western Europe pterodactyloid record may therefore be artificially low in diversity due to preservational factors

    The role of microvessel density on the survival of patients with lung cancer: a systematic review of the literature with meta-analysis

    In order to determine whether angiogenesis is a prognostic marker in lung cancer, we performed a systematic review of the literature to assess the prognostic value on survival of microvessel count in patients with lung cancer. Published studies were identified by an electronic search in order to aggregate survival results, after a methodological assessment using a quality scale designed by the European Lung Cancer Working Party. To be eligible, a study had to deal with microvessel count assessment in lung cancer patients on the primary site and to provide survival analysis according to microvessel count expression. Microvessel count has been assessed on surgical samples by immunohistochemistry using factor VIII in 14 studies, CD34 in 10 and CD31 in eight. Respectively 1866, 1440 and 1093 non-small cell lung cancer patients were considered. The overall median quality scores were respectively 52, 59 and 59% for studies assessing microvessel count via factor VIII, CD34 and CD31, without significant difference between studies evaluable or not for meta-analysis nor between studies with significant or non significant results. Seven ‘factor VIII’ studies, nine ‘CD34’ and seven ‘CD31’ provided sufficient data allowing a meta-analysis on survival and were evaluable for results aggregation. This showed that a high microvessel count in the primitive lung tumour was a statistically significant poor prognostic factor for survival in non small cell lung cancer whatever it was assessed by factor VIII (HR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.16–2.84), CD34 (HR: 1.99; 95% CI: 1.53–2.58) or CD31 (HR: 1.80; 95% CI: 1.10–2.96). Variations in survival among the individual studies can be explained in addition to patients selection criteria by the heterogeneous methodologies used to stain and count microvessels: different antibody clones, identification of ‘hotspots’, Weidner or Chalkey counting method, cut-off selection. Microvessel count, reflecting the angiogenesis, appears to be a poor prognostic factor for survival in surgically treated non small cell lung cancer but standardisation of angiogenesis assessment by the microvessel count is necessary

    Composite foams made from biodegradable polymers for food packaging applications

    Polymeric foams are cell structures (porous microstructures) that have been frequently made from synthetic polymers for use in the development of food packaging. Due to the problems concerning the environmental impact caused by polymers from the petrochemical industry, the foams have been more recently studied from biodegradable polymers. However, the polymer materials obtained are usually susceptible to moisture, thus conditioning the collapse of the porous structure of the material. As an alternative, the composite foams have been investigated from nanofillers such as clays, cellulose, nanoparticles, among others.
