Characterization of a late transitional B cell population highly sensitive to BAFF-mediated homeostatic proliferation
We have characterized a distinct, late transitional B cell subset, CD21int transitional 2 (T2) B cells. In contrast to early transitional B cells, CD21int T2 B cells exhibit augmented responses to a range of potential microenvironmental stimuli. Adoptive transfer studies demonstrate that this subset is an immediate precursor of both follicular mature and marginal zone (MZ) B cells. In vivo, a large percentage of CD21int T2 B cells has entered the cell cycle, and the cycling subpopulation exhibits further augmentation in mitogenic responses and B cell-activating factor of the TNF family (BAFF) receptor expression. Consistent with these features, CD21int T2 cells exhibit preferential responses to BAFF-facilitated homeostatic signals in vivo. In addition, we demonstrate that M167 B cell receptor (BCR) idiotypic-specific B cells are first selected within the cycling CD21int T2 population, ultimately leading to preferential enrichment of these cells within the MZ B cell compartment. These data, in association with the coordinate role for BAFF and microenvironmental cues in determining the mature BCR repertoire, imply that this subset functions as a unique selection point in peripheral B cell development
Effect of Charge on Membrane Rejection During Ultrafiltration: Comparison of Dextran and Carboxymethilcellulose (CMC) Solutions
BaCeO3-based proton conductor BaCe0.5Zr 0.3Y0.16Zn0.04O3-δ (BCZYZn) was adopted as a part of the oxide-carbonate composite electrolyte. The total ionic conductivity of BCZYZn-carbonate composite is 0.28 S cm-1 at 500 C. Perovskite oxide SrFe0.7Mn0.2Mo0.1O 3-δ was developed and used as cathode. It was found that SrFe0.7Mn0.2Mo0.1O3-δ exhibits a primitive cubic structure with space group Pm3m(221); a = 3.8790(1) Å, V = 58.364(1) Å3. The electrical conductivity of SrFe 0.7Mn0.2Mo0.1O3-δ is 15-26 S cm-1 in the temperature range 400-700 C measured by d.c. method. Single cell with BCZYZn-carbonate composite electrolyte and SrFe 0.7Mn0.2Mo0.1O3-δ cathode was fabricated and tested with humidified H2 (∼3 vol% H2O) as fuel and air as oxidant. A similar configuration cell with lithiated NiO cathode was also constructed for comparison. It was found that neither BaCe 0.5Zr0.3Y0.16Zn0.04O 3-δ nor SrFe0.7Mn0.2Mo 0.1O3-δ is chemically compatible with (Li,Na) 2CO3. The fuel cell performance is not as good as those based on doped ceria-carbonate electrolytes
Differential Histopathological and Behavioral Outcomes Eight Weeks after Rat Spinal Cord Injury by Contusion, Dislocation, and Distraction Mechanisms
The objective of this study was to compare the long-term histological and behavioral outcomes after spinal cord injury (SCI) induced by one of three distinct biomechanical mechanisms: dislocation, contusion, and distraction. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to incur a traumatic cervical SCI by one of these three clinically relevant mechanisms. The injured cervical spines were surgically stabilized, and motor function was assessed for the following 8 weeks. The spinal cords were then harvested for histologic analysis. Quantification of white matter sparing using Luxol fast blue staining revealed that dislocation injury caused the greatest overall loss of white matter, both laterally and along the rostrocaudal axis of the injured cord. Distraction caused enlarged extracellular spaces and structural alteration in the white matter but spared the most myelinated axons overall. Contusion caused the most severe loss of myelinated axons in the dorsal white matter. Immunohistochemistry for the neuronal marker NeuN combined with Fluoro Nissl revealed that the dislocation mechanism resulted in the greatest neuronal cell losses in both the ventral and dorsal horns. After the distraction injury mechanism, animals displayed no recovery of grip strength over time, in contrast to the animals subjected to contusion or dislocation injuries. After the dislocation injury mechanism, animals displayed no improvement in the grooming test, in contrast to the animals subjected to contusion or distraction injuries. These data indicate that different SCI mechanisms result in distinct patterns of histopathology and behavioral recovery. Understanding this heterogeneity may be important for the future development of therapeutic interventions that target specific neuropathology after SCI
Approximate k-state solutions to the Dirac-Yukawa problem based on the spin and pseudospin symmetry
Using an approximation scheme to deal with the centrifugal
(pseudo-centrifugal) term, we solve the Dirac equation with the screened
Coulomb (Yukawa) potential for any arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number
{\kappa}. Based on the spin and pseudospin symmetry, analytic bound state
energy spectrum formulas and their corresponding upper- and lower-spinor
components of two Dirac particles are obtained using a shortcut of the
Nikiforov-Uvarov method. We find a wide range of permissible values for the
spin symmetry constant C_{s} from the valence energy spectrum of particle and
also for pseudospin symmetry constant C_{ps} from the hole energy spectrum of
antiparticle. Further, we show that the present potential interaction becomes
less (more) attractive for a long (short) range screening parameter {\alpha}.
To remove the degeneracies in energy levels we consider the spin and pseudospin
solution of Dirac equation for Yukawa potential plus a centrifugal-like term. A
few special cases such as the exact spin (pseudospin) symmetry Dirac-Yukawa,
the Yukawa plus centrifugal-like potentials, the limit when {\alpha} becomes
zero (Coulomb potential field) and the non-relativistic limit of our solution
are studied. The nonrelativistic solutions are compared with those obtained by
other methods.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Measurements of the -Dependence of the Proton and Neutron Spin Structure Functions g1p and g1n
The structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 <
x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV
longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We
find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of
the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all
available data we find at
Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm
0.005.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
Spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron at low values of x and Q^2
We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry
A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1
GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is
tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The
measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole
range of x.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the
nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events,
Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final
state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV
polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity
asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +-
0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta
G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3
(GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
