    Facilitated diffusion of proteins on chromatin

    We present a theoretical model of facilitated diffusion of proteins in the cell nucleus. This model, which takes into account the successive binding/unbinding events of proteins to DNA, relies on a fractal description of the chromatin which has been recently evidenced experimentally. Facilitated diffusion is shown quantitatively to be favorable for a fast localization of a target locus by a transcription factor, and even to enable the minimization of the search time by tuning the affinity of the transcription factor with DNA.     Measurement of Partial-Wave Contributions in pp --> pp pi^0

    We report a measurement of the spin-dependent total cross section ratios delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot and delta_sigma_L/sigma_tot of the pp --> pp pi^0 reaction between 325 MeV and 400 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a polarized internal target in a storage ring. Non-vertical beam polarization was obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, the knowledge of both spin-dependent total cross sections is sufficient to deduce the strength of certain participating partial waves, free of any model.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Heavy Meson Production in NN Collisions with Polarized Beam and Target -- A new facility for COSY

    The study of near--threshold meson production in pp and pd collisions involving polarized beams and polarized targets offers the rare opportunity to gain insight into short--range features of the nucleon--nucleon interaction. The Cooler Synchrotron COSY at FZ--J\"ulich is a unique environment to perform such studies. Measurements of polarization observables require a cylindrically symmetrical detector, capable to measure the momenta and the directions of outgoing charged hadrons. The wide energy range of COSY leads to momenta of outgoing protons to be detected in a single meson production reaction between 300 and 2500 MeV/c. Scattering angles of protons to be covered extend to about 45∘45^{\circ} in the laboratory system. An azimuthal angular coverage of the device around 98% seems technically achievable.     Exact calculations of first-passage quantities on recursive networks

    We present general methods to exactly calculate mean-first passage quantities on self-similar networks defined recursively. In particular, we calculate the mean first-passage time and the splitting probabilities associated to a source and one or several targets; averaged quantities over a given set of sources (e.g., same-connectivity nodes) are also derived. The exact estimate of such quantities highlights the dependency of first-passage processes with respect to the source-target distance, which has recently revealed to be a key parameter to characterize transport in complex media. We explicitly perform calculations for different classes of recursive networks (finitely ramified fractals, scale-free (trans)fractals, non-fractals, mixtures between fractals and non-fractals, non-decimable hierarchical graphs) of arbitrary size.     Spin correlations in p⃗p⃗→pnπ+\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^{+} pion production near threshold

    A first measurement of longitudinal as well as transverse spin correlation coefficients for the reaction p⃗p⃗→pnπ+\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^+ was made using a polarized proton target and a polarized proton beam. We report kinematically complete measurements for this reaction at 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV beam energy. The spin correlation coefficients Axx+Ayy,Axx−Ayy,Azz,Axz,A_{xx}+A_{yy}, A_{xx}-A_{yy}, A_{zz}, A_{xz}, and the analyzing power Ay,A_{y}, as well as angular distributions for σ(θπ)\sigma(\theta_{\pi}) and the polarization observables Aij(θπ)A_{ij}(\theta_{\pi}) were extracted. Partial wave cross sections for dominant transition channels were obtained from a partial wave analysis that included the transitions with final state angular momenta of l≤1l\leq 1. The measurements of the p⃗p⃗→pnπ+{\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^{+}} polarization observables are compared with the predictions from the J\"ulich meson exchange model. The agreement is very good at 325 MeV, but it deteriorates increasingly for the higher energies. At all energies agreement with the model is better than for the reaction p⃗p⃗→ppπ0{\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pp\pi^{0}}.Comment: Preprint, 21 pp, submitted to Phys. Rev. C.     Rubber friction on wet and dry road surfaces: the sealing effect

    Rubber friction on wet rough substrates at low velocities is typically 20-30% smaller than for the corresponding dry surfaces. We show that this cannot be due to hydrodynamics and propose a novel explanation based on a sealing effect exerted by rubber on substrate "pools" filled with water. Water effectively smoothens the substrate, reducing the major friction contribution due to induced viscoelastic deformations of the rubber by surface asperities.     Direct current driven by ac electric field in quantum wells

    It is shown that the excitation of charge carriers by ac electric field with zero average driving leads to a direct electric current in quantum well structures. The current emerges for both linear and circular polarization of the ac electric field and depends on the field polarization and frequency. We present a micoscopic model and an analytical theory of such a nonlinear electron transport in quantum wells with structure inversion asymmetry. In such systems, dc current is induced by ac electric field which has both the in-plane and out-of-plane components. The ac field polarized in the interface plane gives rise to a direct current if the quantum well is subjected to an in-plane static magnetic field.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
