Lattice Dynamics of Martensitic Transformations Examined by Atomistic Simulations

We have performaed molecular dynamics simulations of Fe(80)Ni(20) alloys using an inter-atomic potential of the EAM-type which allows the simulation of the martensite-austenite transition. We present results, showing the development of an inhomogeneous shear system on a nanoscale during the thermally induced austenitic transition. In addition to this we obtained the phonon dispersion relations of the martensite phase by calculating the dynamical structure factor from our simulation results. On approaching the transition temperature the phonon dispersion shows anomalies which might be connected with the formation of the microstructure during the austenitic transition.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Contribution submitted to the "IV European Symposium on Martensitic Transformations" (ESOMAT 97), July 1-5, 1997, Enschede (The Netherlands

GPU driven finite difference WENO scheme for real time solution of the shallow water equations

The shallow water equations are applicable to many common engineering problems involving modelling of waves dominated by motions in the horizontal directions (e.g. tsunami propagation, dam breaks). As such events pose substantial economic costs, as well as potential loss of life, accurate real-time simulation and visualization methods are of great importance. For this purpose, we propose a new finite difference scheme for the 2D shallow water equations that is specifically formulated to take advantage of modern GPUs. The new scheme is based on the so-called Picard integral formulation of conservation laws combined with Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory reconstruction. The emphasis of the work is on third order in space and second order in time solutions (in both single and double precision). Further, the scheme is well-balanced for bathymetry functions that are not surface piercing and can handle wetting and drying in a GPU-friendly manner without resorting to long and specific case-by-case procedures. We also present a fast single kernel GPU implementation with a novel boundary condition application technique that allows for simultaneous real-time visualization and single precision simulations even on large ( > 2000 × 2000) grids on consumer-level hardware - the full kernel source codes are also provided online at https://github.com/pparna/swe_pifweno3

Further observations of protons resulting from the decay of neutrons ejected by solar flares

The solar flare of 1984 April 24 produced a large gamma ray fluence with energy 2MeV. The time profile of the interplanetary flux from this flare indicates the presence of decaying solar neutrons. This makes a total of three neutron flares so far observed by this method. The three flares are used to place constraints on the fluence and spectra of neutrons emitted by the Sun

Measurements of galactic hydrogen and helium isotopes from 1978 through 1983

The differential flux of the hydrogen and helium isotopes was measured using an instrument on the ISEE-3 spacecraft during solar quiet time periods from August 1978 through December 1983. These measurements cover the energy range from 26 MeV/nucleon through 138 MeV/nucleon for both H-1 and He-4, from 24 to 89 MeV/nucleon for H-2, and from 43 to 146 solar activity varied from near minimum to maximum conditions causing the observed flux of galactic cosmic rays to modulate by an order of magnitude. To describe the propagation in the galaxy, it was found that the standard leaky box approximation with an escape path length of 6.7 g/sq cms forms a self consistent model for the light cosmic ray nuclei at the observed energies

Cosmic ray secondary nuclei and the structure of the galaxy

The consequencies of diffusive acceleration of cosmic rays in supernova shocks propagation through an inhomogeneous interstellar medium are explored. The acceleration takes place in the hot, tenuous, intercloud gas, while nuclear collisions, leading to the production of cosmic ray secondaries, predominantly occur in those regions where the supernova shocks collide with interstellar clouds. A simple model is used to calculate the interaction of a (cosmic ray + gas) shock with a cloud, and thus determine the gross topology. Extending this to the whole system, using mean cloud sizes and space densities, allows us to calculate the secondary/primary cosmic ray abundance ratios for light and heavy nuclei

Role of electrostatics in the texture of islands in free standing ferroelectric liquid crystal films

Curved textures of ferroelectric smectic C* liquid crystals produce space charge when they involve divergence of the spontaneous polarization field. Impurity ions can partially screen this space charge, reducing long range interactions to local ones. Through studies of the textures of islands on very thin free-standing smectic films, we see evidence of this effect, in which materials with a large spontaneous polarization have static structures described by a large effective bend elastic constant. To address this issue, we calculated the electrostatic free energy of a free standing film of ferroelectric liquid crystal, showing how the screened coulomb interaction contributes a term to the effective bend elastic constant, in the static long wavelength limit. We report experiments which support the main features of this model

Handbook has been published which presents information needed for design of isogrid triangular integral-stiffened structures. It develops equations, methods, and graphs to handle wide variety of loadings, materials, and geometry. Handbook is divided into seven sections. Handbook may be used by marine and civil engineers and by students and designers without access to computers
