The nut, bolt, and thread are symbols of order in my work. They represent a memory trace of my time growing up in Iowa and my connection to working on the family farm. These objects have the potential to exhibit elements of both simplicity and complexity, expressed through patterns and harmony, and the repetition of form, line, color, space, presentation, and ultimately, their relation to you the viewer. With this body of work, I intend to create metaphors relating to connections people have to one another, as individuals, society and ultimately as a reflection of self. The act of grouping, organizing, and thinking in linear perspectives is forever present, and permeates nearly every action whether it is my intention or not. This work explores the need of order, in particular when it alludes to an impulsive action. The function of the multiple is used to establish linear patterns and rhythms, referencing ones need to create understanding and meaning in daily life. These nuts and bolts become symbols of stability and strength, pointing directly at our lack of control. Similarly to our own lives, my work represents both the anticipated and chaotic nature of reality. I have found that for success to be present failure is immanent and without chaos, order cannot exist. This is revealed once we remove ourselves from our preconceived notions of what we hope to see, allowing us to discover a new understanding of success and/or failure

From local to regional: Evolution of three multi-use trails in Northeast Iowa

    Get PDF
Multi-use trail development in the United States has increased significantly in recent decades. In many communities, trails are recognized as a valuable component of recreation, quality of life amenity, and source of economic development. Trails usually originate as local grassroots projects designed for specific community purposes. In Northeast Iowa, three local projects are evolving into a regional trail system whereas others remain as community resources. The central question in this study is why and how did these local trail projects evolve to become regional destination trails? Case descriptions provide a chronological history of each trail\u27s development. Themes in trail development are derived from review of documents and interviews with key participants. Analysis is conducted within each case and across cases. Discussion is presented according to five themes including motivations and uses, participation and support, actors and actions, funding and implementation, and amenities and resources

Emergence of foams from the breakdown of the phase field crystal model

The phase field crystal (PFC) model captures the elastic and topological properties of crystals with a single scalar field at small undercooling. At large undercooling, new foam-like behavior emerges. We characterize this foam phase of the PFC equation and propose a modified PFC equation that may be used for the simulation of foam dynamics. This minimal model reproduces von Neumann's rule for two-dimensional dry foams, and Lifshitz-Slyozov coarsening for wet foams. We also measure the coordination number distribution and find that its second moment is larger than previously-reported experimental and theoretical studies of soap froths, a finding that we attribute to the wetness of the foam increasing with time.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
